What a bunch of nonsense. Renewing her contract would happen because she is one of the most prolific producers in Hollywood history and has overseen a generally highly successful era for Star Wars. It's just absurd that you have the audacity to claim that someone would be stupid enough to keep her along to "give a middle finger to long time Star Wars fans". People in charge of large companies have better things to do than to act so irrationally.

That doesn't even cover the fact that you are once again pretending to speak for all fans when you act as if long time Star Wars fans automatically share your opinion. Guess what, I am a long time Star Wars fan, and if I have the choice between keeping Kennedy around or placating someone whose comments reek of entitlement, who acts as if he somehow defines what is or isn't Star Wars, and who insults other fans or those who tried to deliver what they felt was a good story, I'll gladly take the former. Even if it means that I'll occasionally have to live with a piece here or there that I'm not all that enthusiastic about.

The prequels got lambasted and ridiculed for years on end. If people have already forgotten the ST, then why are some of them, including you, spending years on end complaining about them? That's a rather weird way to forget about things.

The general audience stops talking about something as soon as it is out of the news. There is nothing unusual about that at all. It happens to every single movie and franchise. It's only those who love or hate something who keep talking about it. All that is left are memes and the occasional memory.

Star Wars also isn't somehow dropping from being the clear cut no. 1 fanchise to being one of many. This claim keeps getting used decade after decade, as if that somehow meant that it would become true. Star Wars wasn't the clear cut no.1 around the time of AOTC and ROTS either. It wasn't even particularly close to the top worldwide, being significantly behind LOTR and Harry Potter. If anything, the return of Star Wars in 2015 temporarily made it quite a bit larger worldwide than it had been before. Only for it to move back to what it had been for a very long time: one of the few franchises at the top.

Yea if your complaining about politics and Star Wars your watching the wrong franchise my friend. George Lucas has specifically mentioned Nixon when talking about the emperor. He compared the empire to America. And the Ewoks to the Vietcong. Nute Gunray is named after Newt Gingrich. The whole prequels were a message about dissent into fascism. You can agree or disagree with what Lucas was trying to say, but at literally no point was Star Wars ever not political.

I would argue that it’s less political these days.

Palpatine was a grab bag actually-Nixon, Lincoln (no idea where you get a hateful monster from Lincoln, but whatever lol) and Caesar, iirc.

It’s based on Lincoln’s treatment of confederate sympathizers in the north. I have only ever heard him directly mention Nixon as his influence for the emperor. I’ll see if I can find stuff about him basing it off Caesar and Lincoln.

It was a grab bag of dictators. Such as Stalin, Hitler and others but also Nixon. I don’t see anything about Lincoln though.

Yet the current slate has been well received (The Mandalorian, TCW, Bad Batch). Despite saying that you want to move onto better things within SW, it seems your the one who can't move on from the ST, not Disney.

I'm free to discuss my opinions about it. And Kathleen Kennedy's contract is up in just a few months. So I would consider this as relevant a topic as anything right now when it comes to Star Wars.

The current success of Star Wars is basically determined by how many D+ subscribers it is attracting. It appears to be doing a good job at that, which means KK is doing her job well.

I didn’t say that you weren’t. I was just saying that your reasoning for thinking a renewal would be insulting to fans doesn’t make much sense.

Can't wait to see the glorious Revolution! All those Star Wars fans fed up with Kathleen Kennedy making their mass exodus from this franchise. Then they can stand together in glorious enlightenment under a new sun.

All those billions of Star Wars fans. The Army! What is Disney/Lucasfilm going to do without such a multitude to feed their machine? Disney is going to be shaking in their ivory towers, their plasticine castles, when they see the great Tide! Hail Filoni! Hail Favreau, those true Stewards. Restore the throne of Lucas!

I think it’s based on how many subscribers plus how many people are watching. The Mandalorian was one of if not the most viewed streaming show. Bad batch won’t top that, but it’s probably one of the most streamed animated shows.

Disney’s long long term plan is almost certainly to cut movie theaters out of the equation completely. That way they no longer have to share 50% of the profits with another company.

They bought Lucasfilm. They could always buy an existing cinema chain as well if they wanted to cut out that middleman, at least in the US.

    Your correct.

Fun fact about that the laws around studios buying out theater chains was only changed relatively recently.

I just don’t think Disney sees much of a future in theaters. Who knows maybe tomorrow they buy AMC. You never know

If they bought AMC they'd also have access to the Odeon Cinemas Group here in the UK - they are a subsidiary of AMC. AMC are currently owned by the Wanda Group.

In and of itself, I’m not for that’s the case. Only the number of subscribers matters. A subscriber who doesn’t watch anything but just has the subscription “just because” yield as much money as someone who only watches occasionally, who in turn yields as much money as someone who binge-watches constantly.
So in order to attract subscribers they have to offer a certain amount of content. A high-profile show like “the Mandalorian” is important for attracting subscribers, but Joe much those subscribers then actually watch matters less.

It is as George Lucas foretold in the mid-00s.

That's too narrow a path to determine success when the totality has to be at the very least a combination of movies, Disney+ and what is arguably the most important of all which is toy sales. Disney+ is going to get subscribers regardless of Star Wars so then it's about how many extra it brings in when series are actually on. I sure they have some calculation on that.

Balance all that against the 4 billion dollar buy, all the production and marketing costs and all sorts of financial factors that go into that calculation. Going by Deadline the net profits of the now stalled movies combining box office rental (their take of the overall box office), home entertainment and TV sales minus production, prints and ads plus other various costs adds to this:

Net profits per movie: TFA 780, Rogue One 320, TLJ 417, Solo -77, TROS 300

Total net movie profits 1B 740M

    Buy price 4B

That's still 2B 260M to "break even" which would have to mostly come from the toys.

I don't know enough about the toys but from what I've read the total retail sales are 2-3 billion a year and 5 billion for the TFA year. Of that Disney gets at least 5% or as much as 10%. Let's be extremely generous and say it's been 3 billion a year on average since 2013 instead of 2 billion and they get 10% of that not 5%. That's 10% of 24 billion from 2013 to 2020 which totals 2.4 billion.

In that case they are now just at that or getting past that break even point or still possibly not quite there. Solo was a total failure of epic proportions. Even if it's net profit is half of the next least successful movie TROS that's still 227 million ahead of where it ended up which was minus 77 million.

So while Marvel has multiple movies releases that will make box office and end up on Disney+ to drive numbers as well as TV series Star Wars only has TV series with no actual movie franchise. They need to hope they can find one.

Lincoln used emergency war powers and was essentially a dictator during the Civil War. Thankfully no one worries about it because he did not abuse his power and made the right choice pretty much every time.

And to think that a decade or so back it was George Lucas who was accused of ruining Star Wars..

At the very least her contract will expire. Looks like it may happen sooner rather than later;and personally can't wait to invest in Star Wars again.

I think most people do not understand the role Kathleen Kennedy has running LucasFilm, and think because Dave Filoni or Jon Faverau have made 1 or2 tv shows/films that people like means they can run a sizeable company...

Her contract expires in 2022 if I recall correctly and no I don’t think when her contract expires that she’ll stop working for Lucasfilm I don’t see her gone until at least the KF movie comes out. And that movie won’t come out until 2025 at the earliest.

to take some great words from Walter White

The only financial failure and again let’s be clear that’s the only thing Disney cares about was solo and as discussed earlier in the thread that failure can be contributed to Bob Iger overriding Kathleen Kennedy.

Kennedy isn’t going anywhere some fans have been dreaming of the day since 2012 and saying just around the corner and it never was. One day she’ll retire but it will be when she decides to until then unless something really goes awry she will stay.
