Vander and Dreis was such a welcome shock, just added to the thing.

Kinda wish we'd got Pops as well.

 

If they hadn't not many would've been any the wiser that there was a Green Squadron. Though I think we'll here more in the future as the story group have 5 years of duty to tell. They can have A-Wings, B-Wings, a new as yet undecided star ship, it's a massive blank canvas to be filled in in the new EU.

 

I was sort of hoping for an appearance by Biggs or Wedge.

I about died when I saw Gold Leader and Red Leader. That was probably when I was most excited (and I mean physically bouncing up and down in my seat and pointing at the screen) during the whole movie.

 

They missed Romodi. Shame.

 

well Biggs in on Tatooine so he couldnt. I am glad they didnt do Wedge (or Porkins), it makes it all very small if they do EVERYONE.

 

Oh, right. I forgot Biggs in canon is on Tatooine at this time.

Recycling old ANH footage for the pilots was a stroke of genius and a real surprise that put a huge smile on my face.

Love that so many of the rebel pilots are grizzled old veterans who probably left the republic fleet when they saw what the empire was becoming, and my wife loved that there was a middle aged female pilot.

 

Do we know when he left in Ep4? Since the end of the movie is the beginning of Ep4 that one dude with the black mustache couldve been Biggs.

 

He was there with Luke shortly after the Tantive IV left hyperspace - Luke saw the battle through macrobinoculars, rushed in to tell his friends, they came out to see (but battle was already over), Biggs arrived to meet them - and then they had that conversation about the Empire - and Biggs tells Luke he's going to join the Rebel Alliance:

^But that was a deleted scene that never made it into the movie. Is that technically canon?

 

Once other sources reference it, it becomes canon even if it was in a "grey area" before.

 

There was recordings for him, but uncredited and could have been cut. I didn't hear him, and it actually makes more sense if he wasn't there.

i heard green squadron chatter.

 

i have always wondered about the opening crawl battle in ANH. 'striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory.....' it sounds even there that they totally took them by surprise and kicked the snot out of them.

it also makes general/admiral/commander tagge's comments to motti more realistic 'there more dangerous then your realize.......' or in the radio drama he even goes into more dramatics 'its not just that their building better ships or have more equipment,.........there driven motti! their fanatics!"

 

Is it true that the actor that played Gold Leader was approached by Lucasfilm to maybe record scenes/lines and when asked for his email address so that they could send him stuff he long-paused before revealing that it was "goldleaderforever@whateverprovideritis.com"?

 

I, too, was really hoping for Wedge, especially when I heard there were multiple digital cameos. But, gold and red leaders were still cool...and Rebel pilots owned this battle! I feel like this is the first space battle to really deliver since ROTJ!!

I do have to say I like the blue squadron flight suits a lot. Much more subdued than the normal orange ones which are a bit of an eyesore even if they are iconic.

I don't see yet, why the color of the suit should be related to a squadron. I concur with one of my friends - based on real world analogies - that the orange flight suits are Imperial flight suits for training (with blue possibly an instructor's flight suit).

Otherwise the members of Gold Squadron should never have worn orange (not even red) flight suits, but rather one of those:
