Super Glue always worked like a charm for me... It holds rubber to chrome quite well, in my experience.

Those are not windsheild wipers, nor are any in the films...

Hmm I heard they were humvee windshield wipers, or at least thats what parks sabers bases their grips off of and they look nice and work well. Other grip ideas for those that dont like windshield wipers could be bike handle grips, drain tubes kinda like the top of Obi-Wans in ROTS and ANH...um you could go with electrical tape but IMO that looks kinda tacky usually.

I doubt that Parks used that as a basis. There has been extensive research on the ROF that you shoudl cjeck out, not wipers anywhere! :)

    I'll third that statement.
I believe they are some kind of T-tracks thats what I've read at least.

If you want to make grips, I suggest you acquire some cheap plastic item such as an old cassette rack that has the T-shape inside it and cut it up. If you have a dremel with a sanding drum, it is easy to make the underside more rounded. Then you can rubberize it with Plasti-Dip.
I have seen other more creative ways in various forums over the years: glued strips of plastic or wood, cut aluminum profiles, sheet metal and even steel.
Myself, I have made grips out of sculpey ... but they were not so even.

No windshield vipers have been found that look close enough to what was used in the OT.
The most credible theory is that it is plastic track for sliding doors from cheap furniture. Several types have been found, but none that is exact.
Someone in Australia has also found some modern metal tracks of about the same shape (but not exact) that are used as spacer between bathroom tiles.
Whatever the original use for the tracks, it is most likely that it was made from extruded plastic.

A funny thing is that once I found at the roadside near a marina a small piece of black rubber trim that looked just like three Anakin AOTC grips side by side and it was even slightly rounded. It was in rough condition and not big enough to be used for much though. I guess it was either from a car or from a boat in the marina. I have got no more leads, unfortunately.

    Straight from the RFP:

"Q5. Then how can LFL sue anyone for infringement if the original props are all based on items in the public domain or designed/owned by someone else?

A5. LFL has a copyright in the unique combination of these items. Do they hold rights in the Graflex? No. Do they hold rights in the wiper blades? No. The calc bubbles? No. But their copyright is based in the creativity used to combine those items into something new - namely, a lightsaber."

Seems like the RFP thinks Lucas used wiper blades...

    hi friends!
I am new to this board, but saw this discussion on grips. i tried those "windshield-like" grips, but they hurt when I tried to use the EL saber for simulated duels. I found heat-shrink tubing from mudhole.com, and they work and look great! See some shots of the heat-shrink tubing on my EL sabers at blogmonk.com. Hope this alternative grip work for you guys too. They are apparently used for golf clubs and fishing rods, and are non-slip, and very thin!
    bless

Tashimonk what was the grip called that you bought from mudhole.com. They look great. With that diamond pattern they look really good for lightsaber grips. If you could post some more information about them I would really appreciate it.

DON'T use super glue!!! It becomes brittle and will crack off. I hate super glue.

Use a contact cement like E-6000 or Elmer's Professional Contact Cement!!!

You can also use thin carpet tape, but it's not as good as contact cement.

    Hey Kiyo man-

I and many others have made custom and replica sabers over the years. Listen up -Do not use wiper blades and super glue! It will never stay together and it will look like crap...trust me. Save your lunch money and get rubber grips from Blast-Tech. I think they are $12.00. Plus it has 3M adhesive tape on the back. If you really want to use wipers, buy some clear 2 part epoxy and glue them on.

As for your EL wire, get it from Cool Neon. Long life EL wire is $1.50/ foot and a Pipsueak driver is $6.00.

    Good luck

    Lets say your right handed.

Don't hold the saber by it's grips. Choke up and grab it above the clamp close to the blade.

What this does is gives you a better balance point for doing things with the saber.

The back of the saber acts as a counterbalance for the blade. Your moves will be a lot faster this way.

Your Left hand can go on the grips of the saber for 2 handed moves but your left hand doesn't need to clamp down on the grips that hard. Your Right hand will do most of the work.

For stunt stuff, don't grab the saber like Luke did in Obiwans hut.

    Hope this helps

Anyone know or have a guess as to what Yoda's grips might be made out of? They are far to flat and wide to be the vader/anakin saber grips, There is a refrence photo just incase you are wondering what I am talking about.
