I think that he thinks he has a lot more powers then he really does because if he could really save people from death then why didn't he save Padme?

He says absolutely "he has powers" that can save her.

I wouldn't say that. He says "Only my new powers can do that" meaning, IMO, when he gets them, not that he has them at THAT moment.

Holy crap. It seems a lot of fans like scrutinizing every piece of dialogue to look for some deeper meaning that isn't there.

You been on long enough you should now that and what is the point of a disscusion forum if you cant talk about deeper meanings.

GTyper, we've seen nothing come out of the seduction of the darkside besides pain and suffering.

We've also only been privy to a small segment of the population.

We've been told that the Sith have discovered ways to create and prolong life. We haven't seen it in action (or at least we haven't definitively seen it in action), but that doesn't mean it isn't so.

I think any ability or "power" available to the Jedi is available to the Sith. The issue becomes intent.

The path to "immortality" was unlocked not through lust for power, as Qui-Gon knew nothing of such things.

I'm glad you quoted out immortality.

I don't believe the Jedi discovered immortality. What they were able to do is lose their ego and embrace the force. They were able to meld with it.

The Sith are able to do this as well, but they are too afraid of death and the loss of power to embrace leaving the physical realm.

Or at least that is how I interpret it.

In other words, what is his motivation once Padme is gone? Seems the whole purpose for his new powers is gone.

    None. That's the point.

There is a two point look on this one:
    (1) Anakin ceased to exist. He lost all desire to live. His life ended with Padme. He has no reason for being, other than to be. So, he inflicts his pain on others.
    (2) He was seduced by the dark side. Once he dabbled too much, he couldn't go back. Kind of like an addicted drug user. Sure, they can give it up - but why?

In the KOTOR - The Sith Lords game - the main baddie is able to hold his body together through sheer will even though it's completely shattered. The Sith definitely have the ability to prolong and sustain life.

I don't think Palps lied about knowing this power...I think he lied about teaching it to Vader becuase like it was already said, Vader would just kill Palps after he was taught this power...its the way of the Sith.

My biggest question about this and my point is that when Palps goes and rescue Vader on the sand bank, what did he do when he touched his forhead?

I don't think it was a simple show of affection cause Palps had no affection for anyone or anything. I think it was part of the idea that Kill the Master and the apprentice must fall. Kills palps and Vader dies too. Palps helped keep Vader from dying!

Vader had no will to live...Palps kept him from dying so that he can posses the greatest tresure of the sith...the Jedi Choosen One.

Anakin attempting to gain these powers in the film is brilliantly shown.

When he has to kill those younglings to get more power its obviously such a hard choice. Padme was right - "love has blinded him".

    VADER: That's not true, @!&*%#!

PADMÉ: And that last word doesn't even exist!

VADER (tearful): Yes, it exist in my imagination!

    PADMÉ: Just as your powers.

VADER: You're asking for a good choking!

Perhaps he did know the secret into bringing back life but attempted to lure anakin into the darkside. If he were to bring padme back to life what would happen? Theres a chance that Anakin could have been lured back to the lightside again but that is a maybe of course. So palps could keep his secret of bringing back to life a lie to him but pehraps in truth he knows what hes doing. There is definite risk in bringing padme to life for palps plan to continue forth in constant rule.

Palps helped keep Vader from dying!

The book was a bit vague, but it seems to lean towards that notion.

I can't help but think of Leia's line to han in reference to this.

Anakin: Love can't save you padme, only my new powers can do that.
Padme: I don't know where you get your delusions.. laser brains. :)

His hunger for new power is what killed her. Oh, the irony.

Well the book isn't canon and the film doesn't show that, and even in the book it doesn't say he saved him from dying, he simply says live..he could be just asking or hoping that he does, it's in the way you read it, unless you consider the suit his means of survival, then that's only way that sid's kept him alive, it's not through powers.

I think Sidious killed Plagueis out of jealousy of his powers, hence Sidious never learned it.

"I have the power to save the one you love"

"To cheat death is a power only one has achieved & if we work together we will learn it"

These are not the same thing. Palpatine has the power to save Padme because Palpatine is the one who will engineer her death by pushing Anakin to the Dark Side. Palpatine probably learned Darth Plaguis' power to keep alive those he cared about. Note, again, that this is NOT the power to cheat death. It's just the power to make others stay alive past their time. Since Plaguis was killed, I assume that this power didn't extend to himself, or had some other limits we weren't told about.

The exact words Palpatine uses are very important. To quote another great movie: "I do not think that word means what you think it means." Be careful and don't read into Palpatine's words something he doesn't actually say.
