You just... ignore it. Since it's apparently only there look cool. Or something.

 

I choose to ignore the possibility that someone, somewhere, might have posited this "ignore it" convention, and instead insist that everyone has ALWAYS said it should be pronounced as a glottal stop, even should irrefutable evidence to the contrary be presented.

A glottal stop is the little catching of air you do in the middle of "uh-oh" or "uh-uh."

Heh, that's what prompted me to ask about this... I downloaded the word list from Traviss's site (it was to source something, okay?) and it includes pronunciation-- and there's no mention of glottal stops, or of anything in relation to the apostrophes. Apparently they're just... there.

 

I usually ignore them, except if the glottal stop sounds nice in the flow of it. I am not sure aesthetics are an accpeted way to decide on pronunciation, but I'll keep with it until told otherwsie.
Well, maybe even afterwards.

 

Karen actually mentions the glottal stop in the grammar guide downloaded separately. She says something about it being there for mando'ade who develop that mannerism in their accent. Really, I think it's mostly their for show, just part of the language. Though it serves it's purpose for those who speak with the glottal stop.

Basically, it should be a glottal stop, but people from all over the world are adapting this to their own speech patterns, and the Mandos are known to be a nomadic culture, so basically, the glottal stops are there and technically meant to be used, but if you don't, it's just considered an accent difference. Whether she has ideas about where the accent changes in-universe, I don't know.

She discovered while working on it in early days that many people either didn't pronounce it or didn't know how to do it, so she just incorporated that into a part of the "accent", and make it almost a vestigial part of the language, made more for showing the addition of modifiers than hard glottal stops, even if the original intention was for them to be glottal stops.

If this thread is going to be continued, I'd like to take a part in that. I've been using the language in my roleplay in Star Wars Galaxies for a year and a half, and sometimes using it exclusively when talking to other like-minded folks. It's becoming a solid language, and definitely easy to learn when you put your mind to it.

One thing that I've been thinking, when you need the word "should" as in "You should go to Mandalore", you're suggesting. So you could say "Gar slanar bah Manda'yaim", or "Gar lise'slanar bah Manda'yaim" - or "You can go to Mandalore".

Which one would be closest to correct here? Boggles my mind

Gratulor : In case of doubt, use context. At least, if possible. Should be clear then if 'You go to Manadolre' is a suggestion or an order. Just my opinion.


Anotehr thing... buir'ika. I am just contracting that to something that sounds like buir'ka. Because of the 'i' already in buir.

Thought about that. Should I cease and desist and try it the tongue-twisting way?

 

Hrm...there are going to be like your regional differences anyway, so I personally wouldn't worry about a little pronunciation thing like that.
