This has to be one of my favourite images of the Millennium Falcon, on Savareen, battered after the Kessel Run and showing how it was to transform from Lando's luxury cruiser to Han's battered old workhorse.
One of Lando's best character moments you don't even see him on screen, it's just his ship taking off in the middle of Han's speech. Speaks volumes.
I liked the way Lando thought, "to hell with these guys" and left! Also it was great comedic timing and Star Wars style humour. I love this photo, the moment Han knew the Falcon should be his!
I definitely laughed at the time, and still do. But the comedic timing is a little too slapstick/ sitcomy/ cartoonish for Star Wars, IMO. Takes me out of it.
Well, I don’t consider that Star Wars’ finest hour either. That said, apples and oranges. Jar Jar sticking his tongue out in annoyance is perfectly plausible. Lando taking off in the Falcon exactly as Han says they have backup in the Falcon, was a little too convenient and silly. But as I said, it’s a funny little joke. And I laugh every time. It’s just so silly that it takes me out of the world for a bit. You know, kinda like how recasts take you out of the world.
Hard to argue with that. But, IMO, it didn’t feel right. A major moment that placed the main characters in serious danger was played as a punchline. Felt like parody. And I don’t know of many moments like that across the films. Even though I was amused by it, mind you. I do like fun. This is me speaking, just to be clear, and not the entirety of the fandom.
Just off the top of my head: Jar Jar surrendering to the droid army right after Tarpals tells him not to in TPM. Threepio’s antics in both the droid factory and the arena. Artoo zapping the battle droid after being captured in ROTS. Chewie cowering in fear on the Death Star in ANH. Wickett knocking himself out with the sling in ROTJ. There’s plenty of moments like that throughout the films.
It was a bit slapstick but I thought it worked. It's a bit likes when Han & Qi'ra are in the stolen speeder and try to squeeze through the alleyway, slapstick but shows that Han is prepared to take a risk and more often than not, things don't go his way.
I loved seeing the interior in Lando-style. I’ll only concede the droid factory stuff as equivalent - and that’s the worst sequence in all of Star Wars, IMO. The others are just silly fun things that are perfectly plausible. Jar Jar hears Tarpals tell him not to surrender, and he does anyway because he’s afraid and a coward. Lando is out of sight and out of earshot when Han decides to bluff by saying they have backup in the Falcon, and Lando then flies away immediately after Han makes that bluff. It was just a little too convenient a gag for me, that’s all. Makes me smile, and I’ve actually never brought this critique up before for that reason. But now you’re making me explain it on a level disproportionate to how little I dislike it. In all, I really like Solo. And this was a fun enough scene. But it’s not my favorite brand of humor in this universe. I prefer “I hate you. I know,” Chewie joining Han in the shower, and Beckett hurting his thumbs.
Han sneaking up on a scout trooper and stepping on a twig. Han chasing a squad of stormtroopers into a dead end full of reinforcements. Han hotwiring the bunker entrance and closing secondary blast doors.
Exactly. Slapstick has been a part of Star Wars from the beginning so to say it doesn’t “feel like Star Wars” is simply inaccurate IMO. One may not personally like it but it’s definitely Star Wars.
All examples of dangerous but fun stuff. But none require the kind of extraordinary coincidence of dialogue and action that was Han saying he had backup in the Falcon, and Lando taking off immediately after (without having heard him). I’d actually have found it much funnier if Lando heard Han say that, and then hightailed it out. You’re focusing on my use of the word slapstick, but I also mentioned sitcomy, cartoony, convenient, and the action of Lando leaving being a punchline for Han’s boast. Something with all those elements together is hard for me to find in Star Wars, perhaps with the exception of the Droid Factory scene and Jar Jar on the battlefield in TPM. In any case, it stretched the feeling of Star Wars for me. I’m not claiming that feeling as some sort of objective fact.
