Science Fiction Thriller Drama Miracle Day (A Torchwood-Inspired Tale)

Historians hadn’t looked forward to it. The medical establishment wasn’t prepared, and we certainly never expected it to happen in our lifetime.

People stopped dying.

Emergency departments and ICUs were quickly overwhelmed and out of space. Across the globe, tents that had been used for the last pandemic were quickly retrieved from storage and put up as makeshift holding areas for patients.

Morgues were no longer necessary. Major cities around the globe had to lay off morgue staff because they were no longer needed. Owners of funeral homes were scrambling to adapt to the fact that there was no longer dead to bury.

Outside a Washington DC medical center, an evangelist stood on a shipping crate shouting into a megaphone. "He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

A radical group was quickly organized, they called themselves The Soulless now that virtually all humans on Earth are incapable of dying. Members of the Soulless believed that because they could not die, they had been robbed of their souls.

Meanwhile, preparations were underway for the single execution scheduled to be carried out in the US on that day. Inside the Kentucky prison, Oswald Danes was strapped to a gurney, our story opens with how that worked out.

Welcome to our Torchwood-inspired story of the end times! Your GMs are @HanSolo29, @Lady_Belligerent, and @Sinrebirth. The game will loosely follow the events of Torchwood: Miracle Day, however, your characters and choices will directly influence how the story unfolds. No prior knowledge of the source material is necessary to participate; all are welcome!


Characters:

Character options are pretty limitless, but they must make sense within the context of the story. For example, you could be a health worker, scientist, law enforcement or government agent (FBI, CIA), a regular bystander, or are you a member of The Soulless? If you would like to discuss character ideas, please feel free to send the GMs a PM.

Please note: At this point in the canon, Torchwood was destroyed. The keys to the institute are held by its only two surviving members: Former police officer, Gwen Cooper and the mysterious Captain Jack Harkness. As a result, no new Torchwood members will be accepted prior to the start of the game. However, that doesn’t mean players cannot become members of Torchwood as the story progresses. Please keep this in mind when creating your character.

Bio:

Gwen went into seclusion after everyone else at Torchwood was killed, Jack decided to “go traveling” and she had few choices since she was a fugitive. She fled to a remote cottage in Wales, where Gwen has managed to avoid detection… so far.

She remains in contact with her parents, only through a secure line they had established years before while she was part of Torchwood.

Her time is spent grudgingly gardening, knitting, and cursing Jack Harkness.

Equipment: Prison fatigues and a locket that contains a braid of his victim’s hair
Bio: Oswald Danes’ story illustrates the dangers of obsession and what can happen when compulsive behaviors lead to fatal consequences. Once a brilliant professor on the cusp of achieving academic tenure for his accomplishments, his career quickly nosedived when he was convicted of the rape and murder of Sue Cabina—one of his brightest students with whom he had an unhealthy infatuation.

During his trial, he infamously professed that 'she should’ve run faster', a line that would corroborate his guilt and reinforce his reputation as a monster. He expressed no shame over his actions and even relished the attention it afforded him, often claiming that it made him feel special.

It was no surprise when the judge sentenced Danes to death by lethal injection, a verdict that met little resistance from critics and pundits alike. To the general public, justice would be served for a heinous crime.

Oswald spent five years in federal prison, awaiting his punishment, but now... judgment day has finally arrived.
