God this thread reminds me of how excruciatingly awful that new Katy Perry song is.

The lyrics to Peter Gabiel's "Games Without Frontiers" go: She is so popular.

Not: She is so flatulent.

Pity.

 

I always heard this in Toto's "Africa":

"It's gonna take a lot to take me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men on Mars could ever do"

Apparently, it's "There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do"

What I heard as an erstwhile, bored middle schooler:

"Where ya going for tomorrow?
Where ya going with the Master Hound?

When the dogs begin to smell her,
Will she stand alone?"

So when he starts singing about these dogs smelling her and she has to face them alone, in my adolescent head canon, these dogs were minions of the Master Hound, and this woman was either trying to escape them as they sought to overthrow their human overlords in some dystopian war of the species, or perhaps she was even looking to make an alliance with their canine supremacist confederacy. The possibilities were endless!

Needless to say, imagine my great disappointment so many years later when I actually read the lyrics and found out there had never been any such thing as a Master Hound.

 

"Feel the rhythm of the music getting stronger" = Feel the heathen Viennese a-gettin' stronger.

 

"I'm a cowboy, on a stale horse I ride..."

(for "I'm a cowboy, on a steel horse I ride...")

 

I always thought it was "done dung deep" being dirty and all.

I had to take a sit down yesterday. I found out that Blur's Song 2 doesn't have the line, "I got my head checked by a jamoakcheck", which I thought it had, and a jamoakcheck was some guru name. It's actually, "I got my head checked by a jumbo jet."

Still cannot hear it.

There's this advert for a brand of cheese here that features this song, while it shows a kid going fishing with his father and later growing up to take his own son fishing. It took me some detective work finding the song, because in the chorus where the lyrics are "bring out the gold laces now", what I heard was:

"We're allowed to go places now"

It seems that the hook of Nazareth's "Hair of the Dog" is "now you're messing with a son of a bitch." For my entire life, I've thought the guy was saying "now you're dancing with a son of a bitch."

Always thought it was a strange song.
