But that's not the quote. Vader says, "When I left you I was but the learner." True then, true now.

Edit: By "true," I mean the impact of the statement has remained the same notwithstanding this episode. Vader is still referring to the events in ROTS, as @Seeker Of The Whills says.

Its also worth noting that Leia and Obi Wan had no scenes together in ANH.

As Ive said elsewhere I think Obi Wan will use the force to wipe the last few days from Leias memory so she doesnt remember him or what happened.

I think "When I left you, I was but the learner" has to still refer to RotS. But "Now I am the master" can refer to later developments. Why Vader would start to consider himself the master between this show and ANH, I don't know.

Underrated Moment and maybe the one that got the most emotion out of me is Leia asking if Obi-Wan was her father and Kenobi wishing that he could say he was.

Acting MasterClass by the both of them there.

Perhaps "I left you" doesn't mean only Obi-Wan himself, but jedi order as whole. that's one way to understand the line now.

That was such a good episode. I love the Leia and Obi-Wan dynamic, less sass and more sweet but still refreshing and this time there was no ambiguity that he was talking about Padme.

Vader in this episode was intense. His appearance wasn't what I expected The camera was moving a little too much for my taste but there was some great shots like the way the flames were reflected on Vader's helmet. I wasn't surprised he let him go for now. He wants to make Obi-Wan feel all the pain that he felt for so long, that's his idea for revenge.

The Quinlan name drop also made me think they're working on something with that character, I just don't know what yet.

And no, I still don't think GI is dead despite every character thinking that he is. He'll be back at the most inconvenient time for Reva's ambitions if becoming the next GI is truly what she wants.

Because Anakin was obsessed with power levels. He was always a braggart. So yeah, when he left Obi-wan he was a student, and now he's bragging about how the dark side has made him more powerful.

And Obi-wan has been secretly learning about immortality and force ghosting, so he knows Anakin knows jack ****.

This episode felt closer to Rogue One style direction in a good way. One of the things that rubbed many wrong about Robert Rodriguez kinetic camera work is that the movements and whip pans and some of the angles felt schlocky to them. Chow, more than Favreau or Filoni, but perhaps less than Rodriguez isn’t afraid of hand held shots but she uses them with purpose and not by default. She goes to them when she wants that extra level of tension from feeling like you’re in the mix of the action.

I would characterize her direction style closer to that of a thriller movie director or horror film director for for this reason. She has a nice command of both static shots, purposeful close ups and hand held work when she feels the moment calls for it. There’s a purpose to her direction that I feel Rodriguez lacks. His style embraces ADD style chaos at times and shlock at times. He’s more cartoony. He lets his own desire for a creative shot supersede what’s best for the most drama in the moment. Her style is more deliberate and focused on showcasing what’s special in the moment in the way she feels captures it best.

Many Star Wars purists dislike hand held shots of all kind in Star Wars because throughout saga history there are only a number of instances when it was really employed. The clone wars scene, a couple of the closeups when Anakin is choking Kenobi in ROTS, the hallway scene and perhaps a couple of the shots in ROTJ. Like Luke’s vision scene and a couple other moments opposite Vader. I’m sure there’s more but those are the ones that come to mind. Point being that it’s rare in the films. There’s a lot of static locked off camera work in Star Wars and everything that veers away from that feels s bit more modern and TV-like to us.

Rogue One was the first of the new films to really bring hand held camera work more to the forefront and it worked great. Edwards and Gilroy found a really nice balance between wide static shots, extreme closeups on faces, and some hand held movement in battle. For me that remains the ultimate mix of old school Star Wars style meeting some of the new school.

I think this episode came close at times to meeting that. It felt like an interesting mix of prequel era filmmaking (that probe scene reminded me of the droid factory scene) and it had a lot of extreme wide shots and establishing shots that reminded me of the prequels but it also had some moments that reminded me of Rogue One but on a premium TV budget.

As someone whose style I feel would probably be best suited to thrillers or horror in her future… I suspect as the tension continues to ratchet up in these final 3 episodes it will continue to bring out the best in her.

Favreau and Filoni do a better job imitating Lucas and Spielberg and Lean but Chow has a Hitchcock quality to her style that I like for this series.

As I said it was not so bad in this as in some other material. But definitely shows in inquisitor-dynamics a bit too much. Fifth brother was pretty dumb in Rebels as well and there he was ordered around by Seventh Sister so I guess he is just dumb and male.

Maybe my criticism is therefore not valid. I just see this 'men dumb, women smart' sort of stereotype so much nowadays on Disney things. And it often feels unnatural to me. It's like males are written too stupid instead of females being smart. Sometimes it really happens that women outsmart men and that's ok.

Great women behind great men is a stereotype too but there are many historical examples where woman has obviously been the power behind throne. But it's ok to have sometimes stereotypical characters too. But seems to me that most modern media is written by very specific gender roles in mind and it bothers me how much it limits the story.

She at least had been before. But it seems now she just pretended to be. Not exactly sure though.

    Ding ding ding!

How about consuming media with the understanding that all of the characters are people with unique backstories and motivations and personalities that inform their dynamics and actions.

and not worrying so much about “males” and “females” as you so eloquently put it.

I think this is often the mistake when they want to boost a female character. They often need to push a male character down to make their point. And it does seem to be a thing that happens alot. And its not well hidden enough for people not to notice.

Yeah. I love how that scene progressed so organically. She first detects he knew her mom and then as an adopted child who senses he’s not telling her something significant her mind goes to where many adopted kids minds do. Wondering who their real parents could be. I loved it and agree that the reactions for both felt very believable.

One of the more underrated aspects of direction is coaching actors and Chow should be applauded for the character work in the little moments she’s crafted more than she has so far. It’s a team effort.

I am surprised that their first meeting in 10 years after ROTS had very little dialogue between them. I think many of us were expecting abit more.

But that comes down to expectations. I enjoyed the episode.
