Saga Of Loyalty, Honor and Love - Syal/Soontir romance Updated 12/28 *The Wedding*

The sound of tinkling glasses and the ramble of conversation echoed through the skyhook. Major Soontir Fel stood in the back of the largest room with his hands clasped behind his back. It was his first moment alone since his promotion ceremony. He welcomed the promotion to Major. He knew the importance of the celebration that night. While there was no way to hide the fact that the Rebels destroyed the Death Star, the Empire was doing everything possible to downplay the disaster. Soontir was proud of what his squadron had accomplished. The 181st would strike fear into the hearts of all those they confronted. Including the upstart Rebel Alliance.

When Soontir heard of the Death Star?s destruction, he felt relieved that he hadn?t been aboard. He would have to thank his former students Biggs Darklighter and Hobbie Klivian for trashing his career. He was somewhat ashamed of the sentiment, however. Another man had died in his place.

?Major Fel!?

Soontir turned around towards the voice to see two senators walking towards him. He didn?t recognize either one. The two began rambling about piloting and politics. Soontir was polite, of course. He nodded in the appropriate places and agreed where necessary. He understood the importance of staying within the senators good graces. He did wonder what the men were doing now that their role was no longer needed.

The scent of Corellian orchids wafted through the air. Soontir?s gaze snapped up. His eyes were granted with the sight of the most beautiful woman he?d ever seen. Her honey blond hair fell just past her shoulders, curling at the end. The lights cast a shine on the silken locks. Her blue eyes were alert with understanding and joy. She smiled brilliantly, causing his heart to pause. She wore a gold-colored strapless gown. Her skirts swirled around her, tamed somewhat by a stylish belt. The bodice of the dress accented her curves perfectly. She reminded of him of someone he?d seen before, but he couldn?t place her.

She spoke with a slight Corellian accent. He was vaguely aware of her dismissing the two senators. She told him that she saved his life, for the senators stories were quite brutal. Part of Soontir, the part trained to respond when spoken to, thanked her profusely. The rest of him was captivated by her mere presence, a feeling he?d never experienced in his life. He was sure he must look like an idiot staring at her. He maintained enough presence of mind to offer her his arm as she led him from the room.

?Wynssa Starflare.?

Soontir?s eyebrows shot up his brow when she announced her name. Wynssa Starflare. The actress. He was arm-in-arm with the most beautiful woman in the galaxy. She took his hand and led him to one of the lookouts aboard the skyhook. He listened as she explained why she ?saved? him. Her hair whipped in the wind as she gripped the guardrail. Down below, he could see the Imperial Palace. He wondered briefly in the Emperor was inside planning an effective strategy to deal with the Rebels.

?Tell me, Major Fel,? Wynssa said with a smirk as she turned to face him. ?Have you ever attended a premier??

?No,? he answered. He moved to stand next to her by the guardrail. Somewhat nervously, he took her hand in his. Her blue eyes sparkled with something he couldn?t identify.

?Tomorrow is the premier of my newest holodrama. It?s at 1900 hours at the Galactica Theater,? she told him. ?I could use an escort. I usually go with a friend, but he?s doing a favor for me and I suspect that you would be much desirable company.?

Soontir tipped his head, unexplainably incapable of refusing her request, ?I will be there.?

?I thought so,? she quipped. She reached into the pocket hidden in the folds of her skirt and handed him a small slip of flimsy. ?Here?s my address. Don?t be late.?

?Ms. Starflare! There you are, my dear,? a middle-aged male human gushed as he walked onto the balcony. Wynssa turned to face him to scold him, ?Roth, you are ma

I love stories set during this time period that tell the story from the point of view of "good" Imperials. It's easy for us to think "Rebels GOOD, Imps BAD," but there were a lot of men and women serving the Empire who were just doing their job and thought they were on the right side. People like Fel, Piett, hell even Mara Jade were just extremely loyal to the Empire.

Which is why I would love a TIE Fighter book series.

?He?s here!?

Wynssa ducked her head through her bedroom door as she slipped one of her earrings through her earlobe. She called out, ?Who??

?Nat,? Myra?s voice echoed through the apartment.

?Oh, well he can wait.?

?See how she treats me?? Nat said in mock-annoyance.

?A real shame,? Myra responded dryly. Wynssa chuckled as she stepped back to her dressing table. She checked her earrings, adjusted the blood crystal pendant around her neck and gave her hair one more glance. She?d spent the last two hours getting ready for the premier- and her first date with Major Soontir Fel.

?You look marvelous, darling!? Nat drawled in a horrible imitation of the head designer at Quartz Fabrics as he stepped into her bedroom doorway. The designer frequently analyzed Wynssa?s wardrobe when on his weekly show. He never let go that she had returned an awful dress he?d designed two years ago with a polite refusal. How he?d managed to acquire his job, she didn?t want to know. She raised her eyebrows at his appearance. He?d paired his black suit with a loud orange tie covered in some type of odd-looking pattern. His shoes were orange and patterned as well. Following her glance, he explained, ?It?s not enough to put me on the worst dressed list, but it?ll do enough. My getup at the art gala tomorrow at the Regency should do it.?

Nat?s goal was the land on the worst dressed list for 10 consecutive weeks. So far, he?d managed three. Why he wanted to do this, she had no idea. Wynssa rolled her eyes as she said, ?Get out of my room, Nat.?

?I see the Major isn?t here yet,? Nat responded as he stepped aside to let Wynssa through the doorway.

?You were early.?

?I had to be here when this man shows up.?

Wynssa raised an eyebrow at him as she slipped on her heels. Nat?s protectiveness was sweet. It reminded her of how her father had been when she dated back on Corellia. A small wistful smile spread across her face. What would he think of Soontir Fel?

?You look lovely, Myra,? Wynssa said to her friend. Myra was attending as a guest of Nat?s. She was dressed in a light blue off the shoulder gown she had brought from Alderaan. Her hair was piled on top of her head, adorned with glittering pins. For the first time in days, her skin glowed. Wynssa had no doubt that she was pushing down her despair. Myra was slowly coming out of her shell, trying to press forward. She insisted that going out was what she needed.

?You?re going to knock the starch out of Fel?s uniform,? Myra responded with a smirk. Wynssa was wearing a sapphire colored gown. The front went all the way up to her neck. There was a large circular cutout in the back. A silver chain hung from the clasp at the back of the neck to her waist. A thin silver belt made up thin oval rings sat around her waist. Her shoes were silver. She wore her hair loose and slightly curled.

Her response was cut-off by the buzz of the front door. Nat moved to answer it, but Myra placed a restraining hand on his arm. She hissed, ?You aren?t her father. I?ll get it.?

Nat glared at her, but stepped back. He took up a position at the side of the room, arms crossed. He put on his most intimidating look as he waited. Wynssa and Myra rolled their eyes, and then Myra opened the door.

?Major Soontir Fel, I presume?? Myra greeted as she stepped aside to allow him to enter. She glanced at the Major?s pressed uniform and threw Wynssa a knowing grin.

?Yes, Ms.-?? Soontir responded politely.

?You may call me Myra,? she responded. ?Please, come in. Wynssa is right inside.?

Soontir gave Myra a polite tip of the head and then stepped inside. His eyes searched the room for Wynssa. Myra chuckled as she saw them widen quickly. She shot a look to Nat, warning him to stay silent.

Wynssa smiled at him, grateful that her acting background covered her nervousness. Soontir took her hand in his and kissed her knuckles. He smiled at her, ?You look beautiful.?

I've been lurking here since you started this, and I LOVE it. We don't get nearly enough of these two in canon and yet they're both such interesting, awesome characters, and their relationship is equally intriguing. On the surface it sounds so shallow, in a way - she's got beauty and fame, he's got money and power - but even though it's never explored well in canon you always have the sense that there's SO much more to it. And you're bringing that to life really well. I loved their first meeting, and the last post was so sweet as well.

I'm really looking forward to following this, and thank you for writing it!

A small stack of datacards scattered across the table as a gust of wind blew through the room. Wynssa glared at the mess as she rubbed her upper arms. It was too chilly to leave the windows open, but it was a more preferable option than turning on the cooling units. Myra had moved into her own apartment a month ago, but she frequented Wynssa?s place.

It?d been three and a half months since the destruction of Alderaan. Soontir managed to stay on planet most of the time. With the 181st?s transfer to Coruscant, he rarely had to leave. Myra?s last stage performance before she had her baby was wrapping up at the end of the week. For the most part, life seemed to have calmed down.
Myra appeared in the main room and flopped down on the couch. She held a box of flavored crackers in one hand and a glass of water in the other. She turned on the holo to a news station. Myra had started following the fight with the Rebellion closely over the past few months.

?Anything interesting?? Wynssa asked as she restacked her datacards. She needed to finish reviewing her investment options within the next couple of days if she wanted to meet the deadlines.

?Not really. The mirror station labor strike is over. The Emperor requests all citizens report any Rebels they know of to their local authorities,? she summarized as she popped a cracker into her mouth. ?Oh look, they are releasing more names.?

Wynssa picked up a datacard and slipped it into a reader. She could hear a recorded broadcast listing the newest additions to the latest wanted list. Everyone else on the list was shown in text format on the screen in addition to an image.

??Tycho Celchu?and Wedge Antilles?? the voice said in a monotone voice, indicating that the message was prerecorded.

Wynssa whirled around, dropping her datapad. There he was, right on the screen. His hair was longer and shaggier than she remembered and face leaner. He resembled their father around the eyes and jaw. The image showed Wedge running through a compound somewhere clutching a blaster. The roguish twinkle in his eye reminded him of their father.

It was impossible. Wedge couldn?t be alive. How had he survived? Who had taken care of him? How could she have left him all alone with no parents to raise him?
?Wynssa? Is something wrong?? Myra asked worriedly.

?Oh, no. I just forgot something,? Wynssa mumbled. She scooped up her datapad, mind in a fog. ?I need to make a call. Excuse me.?

?Okay,? Myra responded slowly, clearly not convinced. Wynssa rushed into her bedroom and closed the door. She collapsed against it. Wedge was alive. Little Veggies had survived despite the death of their parents and was now fighting in the Rebel Alliance. He?d been wearing the uniform Rebel pilots were shown using. The company that produced those particular suits was under investigation of the Empire.

Another thought shook through her. Soontir. Soontir spent his life eradicating Rebels, mainly pilots. What if the two went against each other? Even more upsetting, what if one killed the other?

Tears rolled down her cheeks. Wynssa pushed the heels of her hands into her eyes. She couldn?t tell anyone. If someone found out that she was Wedge Antilles sister, he might use her to get to him or punish Soontir for distant association. Relatives of known Rebel fighters were under heavy suspicion. Worse, Soontir would be called a traitor and executed. No one was more loyal to his job than Soontir.

She?d abandoned her brother before; she would protect him the only way she knew how. She would just have to keep it a secret from everyone, no matter how much it hurt.

It was a small price to pay for the damage she had caused.

The metal bar on the dumbbell clanged against the weight stand. Soontir released the bar, sliding himself forward on the bench to sit up. He picked up a towel from nearby rack to wipe the sweat off his face and hands. He glanced around the training room at the members of the 181st. Each member had gone from a lazy, undisciplined soldier to a true fighter of the

 

Excellent post and poor Wynnsa stuck between politics, family, and a romantic interest.

Am glad the two of them have been able to have more times together before she leaves for how ever long

 

I completely understand Wynssa's feelings regarding Wedge and Soontir and I think she's completely right. It does make me wonder if and when did she reveal the truth about her family to Soontir.

It's great that they found an extra time to be together before she left.

 

Really liked seeing Syal learn that Wedge was still alive. Their story is so sad.

 

I'm glad to see Wynssa trying to deal with how complicated her position is, with family in the Rebellion and people she loves in the Empire. I'm also glad that Myra is going to take some time off for her pregnancy--she needs to have some time to herself to process things. Lovely update showing how complicated everything is!
