...but Attack of the Clones prooves that despite the quality of the second movie (when compared to the first), movies that open huge have sequels that gross conciderably less

Though I do believe that HP2 and T2T have a better chance at large grosses then most sequels (T2T has the advantage of being ONE story in reality) But I dont see HP2 crossing $800 Million

$750 Million for both T2T and HP2 are a possibility though
    :)

Well after that stunning opening for Pluto Nash, Warner Brothers would probably be very happy if HP II earned anything over $300 million worldwide.

Pluto Nash is going to set new records for return on investment. "Cutthroat Island" cost $95 million to make and did $14 million at the box office. Pluto Nash was $100 million.

Even now AOTC is influenced by the competition. It's done well every weekend that nothing significant has come to market.

    Inflation = Hollywood's fall

Once again people talk like inflation just concerns Star Wars...

Using inflation films should be grossing billions not millions. So it's much more than saying Star Wars is losing power. Not even Titanic live up to the inflation.

Even when records are been broken because higher tickets prices, admissions are down from last year and that is a fact.

When and where you have seen any studio posting inflation numbers to promote their movies? That would have been interesting if FOX and Paramount would have posted an ad saying "Titanic becomes the most grosing film of all time but is not true because inflation says is Gone with the wind...oh is not even in the top 5"

I think I would go completely insane if Star Wars gets to $299.99M and then suddenly leaves every theatre and doesn't make anymore. [face_laugh] :p ;)

Densey, you bring up a good point. To some extent, increases in ticket prices cover up stagnant or declining admissions. But on the other hand, it's hard to know the net effect for the industry. Adoption of DVD players has been the most successful home appliance rollout in history. It's catching on faster than VHS, CDs, color television, microwave ovens, etc., and the market continues to grow at a pace that boggles the mind, especially considering that most of the growth has occurred as part of a generally dire overall economic picture.

I don't see how it would have been any more humiliating for Warner Bros. and Murphy if they had just released it direct to video.

Exceptional Weekend for AOTC...I am very impressed, hopefully next weekend will experience a similar drop which would leave it at over $300 Million!

AOTC's weekend gross is unbelievable! I was expecting a 45% drop. Who in the world imagined it would retain nearly the same figures from last weekend.

I wish Lucas would do a re-release of AOTC at some point in the future, just to get it past ROTJ, Harry Potter, LOTR and ID4.

But I know it aint gonna happen,
especially after that DVD comes out.

So much for that IMAX release, huh, lol.

I don't understand why people want re-issues. If people don't watch the movie NOW then what makes you think they will watch it in 6 months for a re-issue?

AOTC has no chance of reaching HP or FOTR as they're far far ahead worldwide (930 and 860 Million respectively)

As for Harry Potter - Am I the only one who thinks that HP's DVD and VHS business has been slightly underwhelming? I mean it is the number 1 for this year so far (although almost certainly to be overtaken by FOTR) but the Sales and especially rental have not been extraordinary. Will HP go the way of Pokemon? If I was JK Rowling I'd better get those remaining three books out as soon as I can before the kids moved on to the next craze

AOTC gets a boost from Japan's holiday weekend:

    According to Variety.com

"Boosted by the Obon vacation in Japan, "Ice Age" snowballed to $10.3 million in its third adventure, and its cume ascended to $182.9 million. Still ruling the roost in its sixth orbit in Japan, "Star Wars: Episode II -- Attack of the Clones" hit $63.5 million, and its cume vaulted to $317.2 million."

Now AOTC total worldwide gross stand at $616.6m passing Men in Black as the 13 most grossing film of all time. It has also officialy pass Spiderman's total gross in Japan.

Now the $100m mark in Japan doesn't seems impossible anymore. Given the fact that there will be some other holiday weekends there. By comparisson after its 6 weekend Spiderman gross was at $46m...now is close to $60m. AOTC is $17m ahead of that pace and with a similar performance is in a lock to gross $80m+...but if holiday weekends continue given AOTC that kind of boost it could top $100m or be very close at least.

So that looks as if Japan follows exactly the same pattern as most other countries - AOTC will beat Spider-Man but falls short of TPM. Japan however might be unusual in being just about the only country where AOTC might beat FOTR

More good news according to boxoffice mojo the holidays in Japan continue until thursday...

"The Japanese market was boosted by the Obon holiday, which sent everyone on vacation. The holiday doesn't end until Thursday so week totals should also be very impressive. Leading the market for the sixth straight weekend was Star Wars: Episode II, which had its Japanese cume skyrocket to $63.5 million and it international cume soar to $317.2 million."

If the grosses continue at the same pace that has been during this holiday AOTC could be close to $70m by next weekend.

I agree that even if AOTC gets close to $100m it will fall short of TPM, but with the best hold of any country. Exept from Russia and China where AOTC did better than TPM. (I'm not sure if TPM was release in China though)
