I spent an hour in B&N yesterday reading the first compilation for New Avengers. Kind of hooked. Artwork is damn good.

I like Iron Fist as an Avenger. They seem to not know how to keep up his own regular title.

I suspect it's going to return, in some way. The backup stories running through Immortal Weapons are leading towards something. Maybe a new buddy comic?

Captain Britain & Iron Fist? :p

Also: Immonen is a god, and I demand more Nextwave. Moar.

They might try to recapture the magic that was Power Man and Iron Fist in the early eighties, but I think too much has changed for it to work.

And Captain Britain is only Captain Britain if he's drawn by Alan Davis - everyone knows this to be true.

I think maybe the problem with iron Fist is that martial arts must always be the focus in some way. Karate fight, big punch, colorful background = IF. Daredevil, Batman, for some reason they have no problem month to month. perhaps because even though they are martial artists they are also detectives. I think IF can benefit from similar storylines that characters like Batman and Captain America have been through.

But I like Iron Fist precisely because he's all about the kung fu. That's what makes him cool.

I do too. But story-wise it can become a one trick pony.

I think one thing that didn't work for the character was being an actual crime-fighting super-hero. In that respect, Batman and Daredevil do have things over Iron Fist, practical things such as transport: both of them swing on rope lines, and Batman of course has his Bat-vehicles, but Danny has to walk everywhere... not so cool. But the most interesting parts of his original comic-book back in the 70's were the flashbacks to K'un-L'un - sheer kung fu mythology and adventuring. And that's what Immortal Iron Fist understood - Danny's not a super-hero, he's a kung fu adventurer. That what was making the book so great.

Probably my fav piece of Cap art, although I have a trading card which is a bit more cleaned up and better looking. And yeah, I have to agree with the #1 spot.

    EDIT: Found the better version.

[image=http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii214/KnifeToTheSoul/poster4.jpg] I find this to be more iconic than the John Burne piece in the link.

So today the final issue of the Wolverine: Old Man Logan arch dropped in the form of a giant-size issue. This issue did not disappoint as it was a bloody good issue. The entire storyline was an excellent take on the old Westerns. Definitely one of the best non-crossover event storyline in years.

Here's a synopsis of the story arch:

    Marvel.wikia.com

Set more than fifty years in the future, the narration of the story, interposed over shots of a bloody Wolverine crawling from some woodlands to a train-track, begins:
"No one knows what happened on the night the heroes fell. All we know is that they disappeared and evil triumphed and the bad guys have been calling the shots ever since. What happened to Wolverine is the biggest mystery of them all. Some say they hurt him like no one ever hurt before. Others say he just grew tired of all the fighting and retired to a simpler life. Either way he hasn't raised his voice or popped his claws in fifty years. His old friends would barely recognize him now."

Logan lives with his wife Maureen, his son Scotty and daughter Jade on a plot of land in Sacramento, California, now part of land known as "Hulkland". He requires money to pay his rent to the landlords of this territory: the descendants of Bruce Banner, the Hulk, who are a product of years of incestuous procreation. In order to pay off his rent, Logan accepts a job from Hawkeye: help him navigate across the country and deliver a secret package, possibly illegal. After completing the job, he returns to his farm and found that the Hulk Gang "got bored" and killed his family.

The claws are definitely out in the conclusion issue.

I didn't appreciate the extra price so half the book could be sketches and covers to books I already own. Yay Marvel. [face_plain]

Yeah, that's pretty lame when comic book companies do that crap and jack up the prices.

However, enough though it's been a down summer in Marvel without a cross-over event, it has been interesting, with the X-Men creating a safe haven for mutants off the west coast. Will this mutant sanctuary be another Genosha? The Dark Reign of Norman Osborne and back alley deals with the scum and villiany of the Marvel U has been very interesting. Not to mention how Moonstone has relished her role as the new Ms. Marvel.

The DC U has been spectacular this summer with the Blackest Night event, however the Blackest Night: Batman & Superman have been subpar as it's unfolding like a typical zombie storyline. The Batman and Robin books have been good and creepy. I love the dynamics and chemistry between Dick Grayson and Damion.

Listening to Talk of the Nation on NPR today (9-24-2009)
It seems that Marvel is going to be making Orson Scott Card's
Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow into comic books.

I know Marvel had some verison of Ender's Game in comic form already. I never picked up an issue, but from the covers it appeared to be the same story as the novel.

I just heard that Ghost Rider 2 and DareDevil reboot have been greenlighted, along with a Silver Surfer flick.

    As Variety observes:

"The movement is necessary for those studios to retain rights to their respective Marvel superheroes. If the properties languish, the rights can be reclaimed by Marvel Entertainment, which is what happened with such properties as Dr. Strange, Black Panther and Iron Man. Iron Man was gathering dust at New Line for some time before Marvel turned the property into a self-financed blockbuster last year."

Yeah the Ender's Game books have been going on for about 6 months now. There have been two 5 issue books called Ender's Game: Battle School and Ender's Shadow: Battle School. Both are now one issue into the "Command School" series. There has also been a one-shot (who's name escapes me) that focused on Ender's siblings.

I've just read New Avengers #57. Not wanting to get repetitive, but Immonen's art is fantastic. The story is pretty gripping too, except I don't really get the power disruptor... sometimes the New Avengers have powers, other times not. Am I missing something here?

I'm not as enthusiastic about Immonen's art. It's just not my cup of tea, but the current storyline is interesting with power disruptor device, but I'm more intrigued by Doctor Harrow as I'm not at all familar with this dude. They really haven't revealed to many details on the disruptor device. I speculating it might have to do with genetics, as it severly crippled Luke Cage, but had no little effect on Mocking Bird.

I'm really liking the Marvel Zombies Return. The first issue was really bloody, gorey and disturbing, just like a horror flick.

I've decided to get back to reading superhero comics, but I've decided to stick to outside-of-mainline continuity stuff for now, so I picked up Shazam and the Monster Society of Evil and the first volume of All-Star Superman. Both are great reads, especially the former, because it's suitable for kids.
