Trying to think if there has been any other movie company who "resurrected" an actors likeness from the grave in the form of CGI and/or prosthetic makeup? I know something was done with Oliver Reed in Gladiator but that was exceptional circumstances. Maybe Something in Forrest Gump?

As many have pointed out, the fact that they had Michael Douglas alive to act out that scene, and then simply de-age him, makes it a lot different than adding Peter Cushing into a film after he's been dead.

The only example I know of where a dead actor has been resurrected is the Galaxy chocolate commercial where they used Audrey Hepburn, rather successfully too I might add.
But it should be noted that Audrey doesn't speak in that commercial, I could imagine that that's on another level of difficulty entirely (because of all the microexpressions we use when we communicate).

So there is a president for doing it at least. I wonder how well it would/will be accepted in the case of Cushing. Not from a "can they do it convincingly" point of view but from a should they do it point of view.

I imagine if the estate (assuming there is one) is fine with it, then it's OK?

I'm not going to lie, I have NO IDEA what Audrey Hepburn looked like until you just said that....I was 10000% convinced that was a real, very pretty actress. That's so convincing. My mind is blown. The future is here, kids.

I know full well what Audrey looks like, i've seen that Galaxy ad on TV here in the UK for ages and always presumed it was an actress too. Wow.

I guess the trick is making Stantons voice (if it is him) look realistic coming from Cushings mouth.

    Remember this?

Not quite the dramatic changes compared to Hopkins or Douglas, but this was 10 years ago (X3). Judging by the still photos of the former ones mentioned, technology has obviously taken several leaps. I'm confident they could pull off Tarkin visually with another actor. His voice and mannerisms are another matter. But again, if he's somewhat in the background or just has very sparse dialogue it would work like a charm.

That might be the reason why they hired Guy Henry, his passing resemblance to Cushing, he has a similar long neck and facial bone structure making it easier to 'map' over the fx Cushing. Some people have pointed out that he has resemblance to a young Peter Cushing, not that I agree 100%.

Superman Returns did a decent job with Brando, and that was 10 years ago.

I can see why they came to using CGI to bring back Cushing. The character's iconic look is associated with strictly one actor, so much so that his face was "rebuilt" for Revenge of the Sith. I guess it comes down to the film being so closely tied with A New Hope. Recasting Han seemed reasonable because we never saw Han that young and therefore have nothing to compare him to.

Just use Sebastian Stan for that ^:)^

Anyway, these effects are getting so good. Downey Jr., Michael Douglas, Anthony Hopkins all looked great. But are they realistically what we should expect? Those actors are alive now and were able to play their younger selves.

I wonder how many minutes of Paul Walker in Fast were CGI.. Suppose that's a more accurate depiction of what we might get, though I hope they do a better job with Cushing.

Actually, I'm not sure Hopkins did play his younger self. In his 60s yes, but not the guy in his 30s. I think that was reference images of a young Hopkins composited onto a stand-in. Which would be more like what they're doing with Tarkin.

Well fully CG like CLU from Tron Legacy or old Brad Pitt from Benjamin Button and the Douglas/Downey Jr de-aging are two different things. One is a fully CG creation by Digital Domain, the other uses live action and the actors with digital makeup/de-aging/tracking of CG textures by Lola Fx(the ones who also did the XMen 3 shots of Xavier and Magneto above). But the latter are not fully CG. That's why they look better.

Gladiator and Reed wasn't even that. They took existing footage of Reed's head from another scene and tracked it to a doubles body for a couple of very short shots. Wasn't fully CG head like Ben Button and Tron Legacy or even like the de-aging stuff. It was filmed footage tracked and comped together. They also did something similar when Brandon Lee died shooting The Crow in the early 90s.
Forrest Gump was a hybrid of the Gladiator technique. Took existing footage and tracked it and Hanks footage together in the composite and and manipulated the mouths of JFK, LBJ, and Nixon to appear to say certain things. Not really CG stuff but digital compositing and manipulation.
