    >also, Timelline Gold says Galaxies Phrase Books was written 6 ABY, but the game seems to imply prior to 1.5 ABY <

We already knew there were earlier editions; there's an article on the Phrasebook and Travel Guide circa AOTC at the HNN website. The one that we got to read was just the latest edition.

Here. You'll need Hyperspace subscription, though.

I was hoping to find out more information about the new vehicles and starships in Galaxies. I asked around on the games board, without success. Anyone know of a website that details SWG ships, & vehicles? How about creatures, characters, continuity tidbits, storylines, etc.?

at the time i used to play SWG (which was within the first year of its release), i found quite a few sites that had pretty good info on NPCs and their quests, creatures, items, etc. while most of it was geared toward the player, some of the info was useful just as a general resource. i think one of them was on allakazam.com or something like that.

Some neat stuff there. Still, its too bad that there aren't original models for every single item (Bane's Heart just looks like a generic red crystal.)

Sony's Galaxies site also has some info, including in-universe stories (a la Living Force) and other articles.

Something interesting: at one time, Mustafar was a lush planet with a Jedi Temple. Odd... [face_thinking]

Bumping this as I dwelled on a question that came to mind after reading the news about the rumored casual MMO being developed by SOE based around TCW (so as not to compete with BioWare's The Old Republic MMO).

It strikes me, as it has most people I would assume, that Galaxies' days are numbered. The cire MMO and gamer interest will/has turn(ed) towards TOR, and with TCW aiming for whats leftm you're only gonna have a few dedicated SWG players left.

At some point, SOE will have to pull the plug on SWG.

    But then what?

Even though I stopped playing and caring about SWG long ago, this is an interesting and somewhat unique situation for a SW game. Up till now, so long as you had the right hardware or emulator, you could still play pretty much every SW game (especially significant ones), be it NES, SNES, GB, PC, Mac, N64, PS2, etc.

But with SWG? When they inevitably pull the plug, that content will be gone. Any EU references/contributions in it will no longer be able to be cataloged, captured, analysed, viewed or experienced.

Wow, SWG, huh? That's a blast from the past :p

Never really thought about the shutting down of an mmo that way. I suppose you could always rummage through the client side files as of the last update. And some of the support websites are pretty damn extensive, that material could be kept indefinitely. And it's been a reaally long time since I thought about this kind of thing, but aren't/weren't there some...independent, player-run servers out there? Didn't function like a full blown mmo server, mostly just a testing ground, or for players who wanted original, non-updated versions of a game. If I'm not imagining things late at night and those do exist, you could hop on in and catalogue until the nerfs come home.

Now that is a depressing thought...I know there are plenty of cool things from that game not recorded on the wook...or most anywhere really.

Though...I think the progam still exists for anyone who installed it, and someone who tampers with the code can look at all the quests, models etc...

Though SWG doesn't have the numbers of players it used to have before November 2005, it's far from dead. They still make enough money to pay a dedicated dev team and are already working on some big updates for the rest of the year (Death Troopers content, Galactic Civil War update). TOR is still at least a year or two away, and from what I have seen until now, it's not the game old SWG vets would like to play. Instead of a sandbox-style game with housing, intricate crafting system and the OT heroes, TOR seems more like a linear KOTOR solo game with some MMORPG elements added to it. A lot of SWG player will try TOR of course, but it doesn't necessarily mean the end of SWG.

You're right, this is something I am worried about as well. It will be very difficult, though not necessarily impossible. Most content is stored in the player's game folder and with the right tools the container files can be accessed (though the tools are not easy to find on the net nowadays). But without access to the original tools used by the SWG developers, it's a real pain to find something in there. And there are many things in those files (NPCs, quests, paintings, lightsaber crystals and half completed quests, planets, ships, etc..) that the devs never used in the game, so you can't be sure what's canon and what's not without having played the game.

I've occasionally tried to find some information in the game's files about NPCs or quests that were removed from the game long ago. I've found the mission texts and conversations with NPCs and some 3-D models, textures, etc.. But the mission texts I've found were pretty much jumbled, I had to try to bring it into the right order and figure out what exactly happened between the different parts of the conversation. But those were just some of the very old quests (go there and kill some people, then return to me), the later quests are a lot more complex and probably require server side actions to really work. So without the right developers tools, you can retrieve a lot of texts from the files, but reconstructing what exactly took place during quests will probably be extremely difficult.

There's also the SWG Emu project. They try to rebuild the game so you can play it on a player-run server. But last time I checked, it was far from complete and I don't know if all quests are working in the emu. And the legal situation is not the best, though LucasArts/SOE have ignored it so far.

My solution: I take screenshots of everything I do in the game. Not the best way to preserve the game's content, but at least I can use the screenshots to add canon information from the game to Wookieepedia. Maybe we will be lucky and SOE releases the necessary software to run our own SWG servers when the game eventually shuts down.

The Mustafar installation as shown in ROTS has a few ornate elements which can be seen in some shots, but IMHO it feels more "Sith temple" ( or "Daedric site" in Elder Scrolls terms ) than "Jedi temple". Also, the preview footage included in the OT DVD release showed large Korribanesque pillars which didn't make it into the film.

They haven't done it for other games, so I wouldn't hold your breath.

I know, I know. [face_plain] And in the case of SWG, SOE doesn't even own all the rights to the game's content, so the chances are even lower than for their other games. But at least they (both SOE and LucasArts) haven't taken any legal actions to take the emu project down so far, so there's hope that they will just ignore it after SWG is shut down.

The folks working on Galaxies are obviously just keeping up the tradition. Zombie Aalya Secura goes along well with human-Durge, Bothan Zekka Thyne, white Grand Moff Declann, and living Captain Typho.

Maybe Typho was a zombie too.

    Self Discipline

It's from Agents of Deception. It does look like a shot up Aayla, but I'm suspecting it's more likely to be Rachi Sitra, the Female Twi'lek character for Jedi decks.

Eh, I don't think so. People were mistaking Rachi for Aayla in this thread (or somewhere) a while back, but I don't think that's the case here. Rachi has purple skin, not blue, and she wears conservative robes and has no headtail wrappings. However, Aayla does have blue skin, wears a brown top and pants, and has headtail wrappings. Not to mention the blaster scars. Not absolute proof by any means, but she's closer to Aayla than Rachi.

I don't think zombie Aayla canon, of course, but it probably is a wink from the Galaxies TCG people.

In-universe, it's far more likely to be someone pretending to be Aayla...

It's obviously not Felucia, too, and not Bly's men. And that's obviously not the result of the ridiculously intense barrage we see in ROTS. It's some other Jedi who dresses like a hooker.

At least Typho wasn't Galaxies' fault. Coruscant Nights came out years after Typho was added to the game.

I think it was in the Death Troopers thread. For now, we don't even know if this Twi'lek will actually appear in the game as an NPC. Maybe she is only featured on the promo image. Seems one of the artists at SOE really like hot blue Twi'lek Jedi. There were at least two on paintings in the game and several others on various TCG cards.

Yep, though I don't have a lot of cards (not spending real money on virtual cards). I found several other cards with blue-skinned Twi'lek Jedi, like this, this, this, this or this. There's also a (possibly) blue-skinned Twi'lek in a bacta tank (click) as well as several images of purple-ish female Twi'lek Jedi.

The TCG database only shows the game text of the cards, most also have a second, in-universe text. But in most cases those only refer to the card's subject (Force Regeneration, Shiim, etc..) and don't explain what's shown on them. I looked up the cards I listed above, but neither of them includes any info about the Twi'lek. The card 'Self Discipline' says "I am wounded and near death, sustained only by the Force. What will sustain you?". 'Bacta Flush' says "Laughter is the best medicine, when you can actually laugh. Otherwise, use bacta.".

I'd be nice if we got stuff like this and this more often. Old-school references FTW.

EDIT: Not just from Galaxies, I mean. In general.

What I was wondering is if someone could get me the information on the playable scenarios. Especially whatever is going on with BoShek, Corran Horn, Valin Horn, and Talon Karrde.
