Great thread - the original "Lapti Nek" song and scene is the best. "Jedi Rocks" makes the scene look too much like "The Muppet Show", plus the song isn't as great. I also prefer the puppett Sy Snootles in the 1983 version to the less realistic-looking CGI Sy Snootles in the 1997 version.

However, that being said, the 1997 ROTJ SE did have several things going for that I thought enhanced/improved the original version:

    - The extended Oola/Rancor scene
    - The initial Sail Barge/skiff scene looked a lot more realistic, and I liked the added touch of the Bantha pack in the desert
    - The ending scenes with the different planets, as well as the new music, which I though was a lot more poignant than the "Ewok Celebration" song.

Doesn't really matter to me. Both versions are goofy. Though I like Lapti Nek better than Jedi Rocks. It just reminds me of the 80's, its funny. Jedi Rocks is just sorta awkward.

I'm not a SE hater....but this is one of the changes I can't stand. 1983 all the way for me baby!

My honest opinion is I feel embarassed if I'm watching ROTJ SE with someone I know and we get to this scene. It feels so cheesy.

Im going to have to come on here and say I love 'Jedi Rocks'!

The scene in the movie is a bit overboard (although I only dislike the CG people, everyone else in costume rocks)

The backing singers are cool. I like it when star wars has its universe fleshed out a bit more, whether that be with music styles or sports. Its why I like DS9 the best out of all the treks, made it an actual universe where people work and live, not just have adventures.

The song itself I like (listen to it a lot) and if I could speak Huttese id sing along lol

Plus the harmonica at the end (in the film at the beggining of the scene) is totally awesome.

SE all the way, the original was way too static.

I've never seen the original version, but I have heard Lapti Nek. Compared to Jedi Rocks, which I think is terrible, and the goofy dance number that went along with it, I would venture to guess that the original is better than the special edition in this regard.

They're both pretty lame, but the original is shorter. And the original song sounds more like the alien version of a sleazy/cocaine-y Tony Montana party and less like the blues band at a rec center wedding.

Pick your poison. Either one evokes tremendous embarrassment. "Derek, are you really a Star Wars fan?" "Uh...no! Trek! I'm a Star TREK fan! Yeah!"

If you ask me, Lucas oughta throw both out, and put in that Dean Stockwell "Sandman" number from Blue Velvet.

    Hilarious.

I agree with all of about being embarrassed when watching the SE. The 83 version is weird yes, but it falls in line with the Cantina scene. Weird aliens do weird things (I guess... but come to think about it what is so weird about a gangster watching a half nude woman dancing?). Gangsters do not; however, enjoy cheesy dance renditions.

I like original "Lapti Nek" far more then the "Jedi Rocks" song they had in the SE one. "Jedi Rocks" sounds so cornball. [face_pig]

Lapti Nek is a really great song. It feels like an alien song. There's a little bit of sleaze in it, which matches perfectly to Jabba's Palace.

Jedi Rocks is TERRIBLE song. Not matter what galaxy you're from. The sleaze has gone, it doesn't fit anything in the trilogy. It's absolutely embarrassing.

I don't mind the CGI characters, but they should have just been put to the original song. I hope George Lucas can one day come to his senses and fix this atrocious scene.

    Original.

The S.E scene is awful.Sy Snootles and the other singer (Yazzum ??) are bad looking CGI.

Love the original. Hate the Special Edition version. I hate it like poison. A long computer generated muppet musical number in a Star Wars movie. That's a cute idea![face_not_talking] Like poison in my eyes!

Rubbery, cartoony CGI just doesn't look as real as the puppets they actually built the first time, and the showtune nature of the new scene just doesn't fit with the atmosphere originally established by Jabba's palace. It also intoruces a continuity error: the original Sy Snootles had tusks, which the animated version does not.

That's a change, not a continuity error. The original character no longer appears in the saga.

I prefer the original, but I don't hate the SE version either.

One thing I have to say is any time they added special effects to the original stock (e.g. Jabba in ANH, the band in ROTJ) it just looks out of place and doesn't mesh well.

I did enjoy the additions to Tatooine though in ANH.

Actually, she does. She appears in both the original and Special Edition. But now the CG version is intercut with shots of the original. Look close, it's there.

I like the original better, but I don't mind the SE scene. The song in the new one is a tad cheesy and just doesn't fit in with the rest of the movie that well. Generally I like the SE editions, it's just that and Greedo shooting first that I have any problem with (well, and the fact that it sounds like Jar Jar can be heard in ROTJ now...)
