I'm liking this dress more and more every time I see it. I love the back of the dress and the hair. The hair(minus the crocheted buns of course ;) ) looks relatively simple. I think this is now on my to do list. That list just seems to keep growing and growing. Guess now I'll have something to occupy my time between now and EpIII.

    Hi everyone. :)

Well, I had a wonderful time at the Celebration and a fabulous time wearing my picnic dress on Sunday. I've updated my site with pictures of me wearing it at the Celebration, so take a look at the finished product.

    link

I think this is the best pic:

    [image=http://www.afansview.com/2002/starwars/img7644.jpg]

There were three of us ladies wearing picnic gowns in the costume contest. MiraxTHorn being one of them. We all looked great, if I may say so myself! [face_mischief] None of us won a medal, but I think we all won a lot of smiles from the crowds. And that was a great feeling! :)

It's so cool to see faces of everyone in all the C II pics! You talk to people so much online, and never know what they look like. I had images in my head of how I imagined people looking, but now I can really see you all!

ObiDawn your dress is gorgeous! Did you guys end up having your picnic?

MiraxTHorn I have heard nothing but good things about your singing performance! Congrats! Do you have any final pics of your dress?

    Great job everyone [face_clown]

    Thanks Mrs_M :)

My husband said that MiraxT sang beautifully! I didn't get to hear her because I was stuck in the backstage hallway with everyone else. :(
It was really nice to put faces to names and I think that was the best part of the contest. :)

    Hi Guys,

Thanks for the compliments! I got my pictures back yesterday and got a bunch of good ones from around the convention center, but the ones of the contest were not so hot :( . Major bummer since one of those was with me and Warwick Davis. I'm so sad that didn't turn out! The lighting in there did screwy things without flash photography.

Anyway, I'll scan some in this weekend so you can see the finished product. We didn't get to have our picnic, Mrs. M. I was very disappointed, but Sunday was a crazy day! Dawn and I didn't even get to meet until right before the contest since I skipped the parade to go see Carrie Fisher. BTW, Dawn, you're hubby's a cutie. It was still so much fun to meet and put a face with a screenname! In case you all couldn't tell, Dawn is super sweet and her dress is even more stunning in person!

    Regards,
    M.

Well, right back at ya' Mirax!

I was looking for you all day Sunday. I even had MiraxH looking for you too! I was really worried when I didn't see you at the parade. But, you were the smart one by going to see Carrie speak. I wish I had done that as well!
From what I hear, you sang just beautifully and you looked equally beautiful in your gown. Your hair was perfect.

Our pictures form the contest came out very dark too. My hubby got one of Warwick and I, but it's quite dark. :( Oh well, we have our memories!

Hey there! This is my first post. Just writing to say that all the dresses I've seen are just great! Too Bad I didn't get on here a while back--I've just completed my second recreation of this gown. The first I sold on ebay right B4 CII, and the second I've just mailed to a client to wear on opening night. I am a professional seamstress here in Florida and would be happy to tell others how I made my versions. I also have materials to make a couple more of Padme's gowns--but I'm just drooling to see that wedding dress!!!!

Kia ora:). I joined theforce.net's boards just so I could find out and talk about this costume;). And a few others at later dates:)

I have been looking at the corset and figuring out just how to make it (I'm posssibly going to recreate this gown in white, as I have 10m white silk chiffon and white tulle and white crystal organza to heat set some crinkles into).

The corset seems to be at least 4 layers, two for the outer shell and two for the lining. The outer shell is free moving from the lining, you can see the top layers wrinkle, so it'll only stitched to the lining around the edges (top bottom and centre back opening).
At the top you can see the seam sewing lining to top layers, and it's been pulled down slightly, so you can see the lining.

The top two layers are sewn as one (you can see from the panel pieces that the sewing goes through either two medium weight fabrics or one very thick layer or possibly three lightish weight fabrics.

While there are no topstiching lines through the top layers, I still believe the lining is boned. The boning channels would just be through the two lining layers.

This would all account for the very thick corset.

The back is most likely hooked up. In the views of the back of the dress you can see a short narrow v opening at the very bottom. So it makes a zip ver unlikely.
Hooks up the back are common place in stage costumes, time consuming as they can be to fasten.

It could also be laced, I see no evidence of lacing ties or grommets, so this would leave the option of lacing rings sewn to the inside. These are a great idea and I use them on my german renaissance bodice that I have yet to complete.

Loving seeing the creations so far:). I'll be seeing the film in a few days, so I will possibly be bringing a note book... anyone else doing the same so a great sharing of new ideas can happen:)?

Oh, and I've just looked at the pics of the costume hanging up.. it's actually a seperate skirt!.
The sleeves are hanging *inside* the shawl, which either means there is a blouse hanging inside the corset , which you cannot see hanging out the bottom of the corset, or it is a part of the corset. I favour the latter as the blouse would then be very short indeed and prone to riding up.
This makes a lot of sense. It means the neckline and the sleeves will stay in place and not shift about. Very handy for shooting and keeping continuity happy;)

Oh and, MiraxTHorn, what did you sing? I'm a singer too:)

    Hi Amidala-Leia :)
Thank you for your kind words and I hope to see your dress sometime soon!

Neimhaille, hi and welcome! I just took a peek at your websites and your costumes are great!
I believe it was mentioned a few pages back by PELEGANT that the sleeves and neckline seem to be attached to the corset and I have come to believe that this is probably right. You can really see this in the making of video and if I ever make this again, that is how I'd probably do it. The one thing I really don't like about my dress is the sleeves. They aren't long enough and they don't have the elastic bands in them and I think I could re-make new ones and attach then to my already existing corset.
Hmmmmmmmmm...I smell my next project! [face_laugh]
We would all love to see and hear about anything you do with this costume!

Ferdalump, hi and welcome too! :)
Pictures! Can you show us pictures of your versions? We love pictures. ;)
And, I think most of us are drooling over seeing the wedding gown!

Obi-Dawn thanks for the greeting. I'd love to show pics as soon as I figure out how to put them on my post (???) My "original" was sold on ebay a couple weeks ago, but pics are still there if you look at closed auction AOTC Amidala costume. I just sent my 2nd one to California-but got to take a whole roll of pics first-so hopefully they'll get on here real soon. I attached my sleeves to the corset under the arms and elastized them at the top to be worn off the shoulder with the wrap going over them around the shoulders. I have materials to make a couple more of Padme's dresses but first I have to make my 6 year old cousin Sydney a picnic dress. To quote her "Ferd, you know the new star wars movie is called Attack of the Quwones?? And Yoda has a lightsaber?" Too cute how can I resist warping her little mind and starting her early on Star Wars!! I have pics of her previous Halloween costumes on my website (under construction) at http://home.earthlink.net/~dawber1/
    P.s. my real name isn't FERD that's just a nickname :)

    Hi Girls,

Ok, I finally got some pictures scanned in and loaded to my website. Two are from Saturday night. The first is of my friend, SwordChick and two nice guys who asked us for a picture - Darth Maul and my 'son' - and me waiting for the concert. The second is me with 'Jorg Sacul'. (What fun that was!) And the third is from Sunday morning with Brennan Swain, one of the winners of the Amazing Race. I liked my hair much better on Sunday. ;) Then, finally, I put in a pic of me singing. I sure wish that had turned out better!

    My Photos

Neimhaille - I sang a much edited version of Lara Fabian's "Adagio". It's a beatiful song about a woman who has lost her love, probably forever. The minute I heard it, I thought of Padme and what I suspect is on the horizon for her. I changed the word "Adagio" to "Anakin". It worked pretty well, aside from being completely nervous and the sound guy messing up my music. Oh well, I had fun doing it!

As far as what I would do differently on my dress? I've been thinking about that. I'd really like to change the back of the bodice from laced to hooks. I heard Trisha Biggar tell Nostradamus, I think, that's what the real thing has in the back. The laces don't keep it as tight as I'd like. I wouldn't use a synthetic fabric again. Over the course of two days, the crepe was pretty scratchy. I've washed it with a lot of fabric softener, so I'm hoping it won't be as bad on Wednesday and Thursday this week.

Question for you all - how many showings are you going to wear your costume for? I'm doing at least two this week and more if I can talk my friends into it. I won't do it all by myself, but I sure don't want this dress I spent so much time on to languish in a closet!

Well, gotta go back to my sewing machine and finish my husband's Obi-Wan costume for Wednesday night.

    Regards,
    M.

Obi Dawn: Thanks:0). I love costuming, or making garments for special occasions.

And I guess I must have missed that post! 11 pages to go through.. plus all the links and the padawan site...;) Cool though that it's pretty well confirmed. Those screen caps were *very* helpful in that regard. The making of doesn't happen to show how they are attatched? I know the lace of the under dress of the Titanic "Jump" dress is tacked and the edges left raw. I can't imagine the sleeves and draped neck of this costume are left unfinished on the inside. It wouldn't be too hard to sew them in at the neckline.. but you can see at the top of the corset that this isn't so. The top layers of the corset is pulled down, so yu can see the top seam and part of the lining.

It could have been made like a guimpe, a short blouse, and hemmed *then* tacked in place I suppose?

You might only need to add a section to the sleeves. The elastic looks like it's in casings, so you could use that a join in the fabric. But of course you probably have good access to the fabric still:0).

MiraxTHorn: I'm just dling an mp3 of Lara singing, as I hadn't heard it before. Ooh, nice. Can see how it would work.

Nerves are an interesting thing are an they? Mine tend to be worse when I sing infront of a small crowd, or a singing lesson;).
And you got great reviews:) So they obviously didn't prevent the appreciation of others:0). How did you manage the accomp? Did you manage to strip her voice from a track or did someone play for you? Or did you find a track without her voice?
Don't you just want to throttle sound guys sometimes;)
    As for the dress:
You could try wearing a very fine body suit/camisole underneath. I have a great pale flesh colour one with fine straps that would be hidden under the ribbon straps of the corset. You might even be able to make a strapless top in a fine knit and either tack it to the inside of the dress or to anything you might be wearing under it.

I'll be making the lining of the corset in a cotton and the faux chenmise is silk chiffon. But if I get any sympotms of irritation will be whipping that body suit on asap.

And I'm pleased that my (educated) guess at hooks was right. I figured it would be more likely than lacing rings, as I've been in many wardrobe departments and there is a pretty established way of making costumes. lacing rings is not all that common.

I might go for the latter as my days of being able to hook up a back fastening dress my self are long gone (I have RA, and little repetitive movemnts are pretty damaging). I'll use some boning along the edges of the back panels to keep it from gaping.

I'm not even gonna start on how wonderful the movie was, cause I believe most of us can agree it was much fun!

I gotta hand it to Lucas, he did a great job!

My friend brought her digital camera and well, only very few pictures came out. I did take some pictures with my camera, but by the time they get developped, Episode III will be in theaters.

    The first picture I just couldn't resist ^_^;;;

An update: Some of you may have noticed, in the movie when she is rolling around with Anakin, you can see her shoes. They look like granny type shoes (lace-up, pointed toes). They are white with gold toes and heels.

I went to JoAnn's to buy snaps for my ANH Leia gown and guess what I saw?
The fabric from the movie. I brought some home and held it up to the light. Same Color, same texture, etc. Look in the Home Fabric section of the store of all places lol.
