We must all be too busy sewing to post. We actually slipped onto Page 2!

I was wondering if you all agree with afaeryschild regarding the ribbons? She mentioned that it looks like they hang down in two places, from the wrist and from the elbow. I'll be putting mine on this week, so I need to decide if they should extend at both spots or not.

    Thanks,
    M.

yep. There is a second set of ribbons. See here:

Just one wrap around, though, not crisscrossed.

    Good morning :)

I found scans from the AOTC graphic novel (comic book) that show the picnic scene. Needless to say, these are spoilers so beware.

    BEWARE! SPOILERS!

I have to agree that there are two places where ribbons are tied onto the sleeves. Lots'o'ribbon!

I got a lot accomplished on my costume this weekend. The corset is officially done. I added quite a lot of new embroidery to match the better pics we have had of it recently. I am very pleased with the end result and that I know it is very very close to the original. I added more of the daisies and green vines/leaves. It looks wonderful. I also put in a separating zipper. I LOVE separating zippers! It worked so well and was so easy to sew in and it makes the whole thing fit me just perfectly! YAY!
I'm also very grateful for the 'tulle' talk we all had last week. I went to the fabric store and found a yellow/goldish tulle that is very wide, (surly_girlie was right, of course! :D ) wide enough to accomodate the pattern so that it will be cut in one piece. I am going to start working on it today.
Then, I just have to tie some more ribbons onto the sleeves and voila! Finito! :)

MiraxH, did you get the beading all done? I look forward to hearing about your embroidery. It was definitely my favorite part of this whole process.

After all the talk about the skirt, I have finally succumbed to temptation and decided to add the flower and vine detailing on, rather than finding some pre-made material and resist dying the vinework. Ack! The flowers are supplied by removing them from lace (My estimation is that the design uses about 15 per square foot?.), and the vines, well, I don?t know. It really looks like a braid/trim to me, but I really can?t find anything light/thin enough. I have cut out about 60 of the flowers, and I estimate that it will take about 500+. Good thing I have a while!!

In regards to that amazing picture of the cape, wow, it is really obvious that it is A) tulle, B) scalloped, variegated, edging. If someone tries this, please let me know if you are successful!!! I was going to do bias tape, but ack! Accuracy demons strike again. I did notice in on picture where the cape folds back on it self, that there is a bit of white underneath, which means they probably used stabilizer/sulky. I still don?t think that would be enough to do that heavy embroidering on tulle, though?.

    Hi Guys,

I'm starting to get into serious panic mode!! I have so much to do, I don't think I'll be getting much sleep between now and May 3. Last night, when I did go to bed, all I could think about was what I need to get done! Argh!! Work is a serious inconvenience right now! ;)

I'm not done with the beading on the skirt yet, though I'm not too worried about that because it goes quickly. Also, I have a long bus trip with my students coming up next week to work on that. I finished the blouse last night and it only needs the ribbons.

But, the corset embroidery and the cape have me very stressed! I'm going to start the corset embroidery tonight and I'm really nervous about it. Once I get a couple swirls under my belt, I'll be fine, it's just the actually starting that scares me!!

Few question and ideas for a couple of you:

Dawn Did you make your own pattern for the cape? Or are you using the same as Mrs. M? How far down your back did you make it? Are you going to cut on the bias as you mentioned earlier? Are you going to stabilize the flowers on the tulle in any way? What are you planning for the embroidery on the cape? Any details would be helpful on this! :)

Judy - I haven't done it yet, but I'm planning to do the embroidery on the edge of the cape. I was thinking that to get it to look right, I would stitch over a string. That should give it enough bulk to look like the real thing. I am worried about stabilizing the flowers on tulle. What do you think of putting a small piece of the same tulle between the flowers and the cape itself?

Ok, jusrt writing helps calm me down, so I'm sorry if this is really boring to read :) . One more hour and I can get home to work on it!

    Take care,
    M.

Hey Mirax :) Don't panic! You've got everything under control.

Don't be nervous about the embroidery. It was SO much fun! It was time consuming for me because I went very slowly and I was very picky about each stitch, but after the first few parts it did get easier.

As far as the cape, I haven't even started working on it yet today. I'm being a slacker right now. ;) I actually e-mailed a picture of it to my mom and I am awaiting her expert opinion on the best way to finish off the edge with that embroidery.
As for the pattern, I did draft my own. surly_girlie gave me invaluable advice on how to do it. My pattern is almost a full circle and Mrs._M's looks like a half-cirle, if I rememebr correctly. Anyway, to get the drape effect I was after it had to be circular.

Judy! YAY! Welcome to the white flower power club! You will have so much fun sewing all those on! :p

you are eeevvvilllll. Tempting me! Peer Pressure!!! Augh!

Yes, white flower power. I might think differently when this is done, though. :) Right now I am still getting everything together (still need bodice fabric, but since I can't seem to find that texture, I am going to probably take some golden acetate and "burn" in those wrinkles with a hot iron). Unfortunately, I have four projects in front of it (ack!), but I want to get all the tedious stuff out of the way *now*, so I won't be doing it at 3 AM before the event. Like every other project.

Obi-Dawn can you describe what you're doing with your cape pattern? I haven't made my cape yet, and I want to make sure I am doing it right, when I do start. I made my pattern based on how I visualized the cape appearing if you laid it on the ground flat. I'm having trouble picturing how a circular pattern would accomplish the same effect, but if s-g gave the advice, it must be good! [face_clown]

Thanks for the encouragement, Dawn! I appreciate it! I don't get what you're saying about making your pattern for the cape a circle, though. I'm having 3D visualization problems, I guess. Ok, back to work.

I finally started on the emboidery. So far so good, though it't really going to take a lot of time! Sleep, who needs sleep, right?

I'm a professional doll artist/seamstress first timer on this board after researching this dress for a doll for a charity. I was just trying to get the color down. In some pictures it looks yellowish others it looks gold. In others yet it has a look of both. I think I finally figured out the color after enough pictures! I bought the fabric for the lace embroidered cape at Hobby Lobby. It already had the flowers and vines. In fact as close as I can tell from every picture I can find it is an exact match. I bought this fabric months ago for another dress I get orders for frequently so I bought all they had at the time at that paticular store. It is embroidered tulle and very soft and flowy. Not expensive either! The edging on the cape can be made by using a verigated green thread buy the sulky company. It is a silky high sheen thread and will automatically when sewn give the changing of colors needed on the edging of the cape. The design on cape I just had to follow the flower and floral design already on the cape, which goes very quickly when the design is there since you only have to go over the original stitch. If you trace the scalloped design on sulky tear away stablizer under the tulle, baste them together, then you just have to set your machine on a satin stitch and follow the scalloped pattern on the tear away. After you're done sewing the edging it will tear right off and you are left with a perfect scalloped edge with very little time involved. The little pink flowers were sold as premade appliques for a long time and probably still could be bought at most fabric stores for those of you wanting to save time. It really isn't a hard costume to make it is a boned bodice with sleeves that are attached at the armpit. Two little straps with roses on the staps that match the headband. It has three areas in the sleeve that are gathered with elastic inserted into casing which is easy enough, from what I see from the Star wars piece on the costumes. The ribbon is then wound around the gathered area start at the top of the elbow. Leave plenty of the ribbon to hang freely, then wind around the arm and tie again at the wrist and leave extra ribbon to hang there also. I'll check back to see if anyone has any questions if I can help I'd love to. It's truly a beautiful dress!

PELEGANT, thanks for the input. I edged my cape with the sulky variegated thread and tear away stabilizer just a few nights ago. It turned out fabulous!
I think I know the exact fabric you are speaking of from Hobby Lobby. :) I'm doing mine the hard way though and embroidering it by hand. What can I say, I have found that I love to embroider! :D

Are you kidding me about this tulle with the pattern in it? Man, the nearest Hobby Lobby is at least two hours away, but if it saved me time, it would be worth it. Hmmm. Is it the right color or would it need dyeing? If I called the store, might they know what I was talking about? Pelegant - since you've used it before, do you happen to have the stock numbers or detailed description or title of the fabric?

Thanks for the idea on edging the cape, though. I was thinking of doing it by hand, but that way will be much easier, I think!

    M.

    MiraxTHorn,
Yes, I bought the fabric at Hobby Lobby about 4 months ago. I have it in white and ivory. I used (tulip brand soft brushable fabric paint bought at Micheal's craft store) mixed in water equal parts and dyed it gold by brushing it on the fabric I only had small pieces to do. You could just mix the paint with water and put it in a small plastic basin and dye it like you would be washing it. It would take several bottles as I bought it in a 1 oz. bottle but it turned out great. The fabric is washable afterward and easy to handle. It has a very nice shimmery gold color but not shiny. The fabric is 56" wide and is a very soft tulle with embroidered flowers already on it. I would call the store you are thinking about buying it at and ask if they have any available before the drive as sometimes they carry it and sometimes I can't find it. I used it for the dress in the Movie Somewhere in Time also, and get orders for that dress quite a bit since it is very similiar to the dress worn by Rose at the end of "Titanic" in what some call the "Dream Sequence". It is a nice fabric because if you want you can use the embroidered lines by hand or machine and stitch right over them with the pinks and greens to get the flowers and vines. I am making the dress tomorrow and will have pictures to show how I made the dress with the gold paint and embroidery if you are interested I can give you a link to see it done. Remember it is going to be on a 16" doll so it will be miniature but as identical as possible. Good luck!

Wow! This is amazing! I only found this site yesterday, and it's just so cool! Great tips everywhere and people sharing info about the same dress.

So, yes, like many of you, I ,one day, was walking down a street when I came across the Vanity Fair and fell instantly in love with the Flower Dress and knew I had to make it for the premiere.

    Even though, now I wish I had choosen the Battle outfit instead ^_^;;;

    But, it's so pretty.

Anyways, I've been trying to read all the posts but there are just so many of them.

I'm really looking forward to seeing everyones final result.

I'm in the process of putting up a site for my dress. Everything from, what to get, patterns and just a regular progress site.

So, err..I guess the best way to make myself feel welcomed and useful is to give out a tip. ^_^

Well, I've noticed some of you are about to put the white flowers on the skirt.

So, for those who wish to cut corners, save money and time, try this:

Head down to your local dollar store or even a material store and pick up a few of those fake flowers that look like purple lilacs only white.

Cut them up, and with the help of a glue gun, put a small dap in the middle of the flower and apply it on the material.

Now for those who have two layers for the skirt, put the flower on the first layer and press it against a solid background. But don't press it too long or the flower might actually glue on the table. Just put the flower on, press and release. Let it dry for a minute.

This works. I tested it today and damn did that flower stay on the material, very hard to take off and when you just use a dap of glue, it's not heavy at all.

    Beats hand sowing it.

Anyways, I've only started and my skirt is almost done, still got the rest to go.

    My mom is so gonna kill me when this dress is finished. ^_^;;;

I MUST have this dress finished by Sunday. That's when prom is. The embroidery on the bodice is about 1/3 the way done... I'm gonna have to bring it to school and work on it there. :p

Then there's another crisis. I don't have enough of the sheer fabric that matches the blue of the fabric I have! And no store in town has something that matches!!! :_| I'm gonna have to find something. But it's looking really nice so far, and I think that by having it in blue instead of gold puts a nice slant on it.

    Happy Sewing!

Hi no_name and welcome! :) Pics pics pics! We love pics! So, if you can show us some in prgress pics we would love it! Plus, we love details, so if you want to tell us everything about your dress, we'd be happy to hear it!

Jedi girl, I also can't wait to see the final results of your dress in blue. :) Keep up on the embroidery, it's so worth it once it's done.

Speaking of embroidery....how's it going MiraxH? I hope it's almost done and we wanna see! :D

I'm half way done with sewing on the roses to my shawl. I put fake hair in my hair bun snoods and just have to attach them to the headband. I can't wait for this thing to be finished!

    Hi Guys,

My dress is coming along, though I still feel highly stressed about everything. I'm about 2/3 done with the embroidery and still have beading to do on the skirt. I also have to sew on the flowers and embroider the cape. My stress is because I'm leaving tonight on a trip to Wash DC with my students, and I hadn't planned to take my costume. But it looks like I have no choice now. So, I'll be sewing all the way out there and back. Wish me luck and good kids, so I have uniterrupted time! Can't wait to see everyone's dresses at CII and in photos!

    Best Regards,
    M.
