I went to 6 pharmacies in my neighborhood, in Montreal, in all 6 pharmacies they told me that they were out of stock for hygienic mask and disinfectant liquid. They told me that they don't know when they will be replenished.

 

Got both covered. Hand hygiene is overall pretty bad here. Wonder if it’s temporarily improved. But boy were masks popular even before the virus and the incompetence on the Diamond Princess, which will make things worse.

They just confirmed three cases here in the Czech Republic, all of them are in hospitals in the greater Prague area with mild cases. All three people had been in northern Italy. Annnnnnd now the quarantine arguments are going to begin in earnest.

I'm meeting with my US friend who's been living in Asia for the last decade plus in NYC tomorrow -- I hope to be Patient Zero for the outbreak...

He/she can still spread it even if they don't. Viral load testing has demonstrated the same level of replication in both actively symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals. That is both highly unusual and terrifying.

 

Turkey closed its border with Iran a month ago, but I'm still wondering why (how) it doesn't have any reported cases.

 

They might be keeping it quiet.

 

To clarify: I'm not under quarantine, they're trying to figure out what to do with folks that have been in contact with known carriers (again, does not apply to me at this time) because we managed to make it this long without any cases.

Actually they've got more cases where my parents live since they have the cruise ship evacuees. Small ironies.

 

Pulitzer prize winning health expert Laurie Garrett had an interesting take on the spread of the coronavirus on the U.S, and probably on the rest of the world. While an autocratic state like China has been irresponsible at the beginning of the outbreak and now fights the virus by going as far as imprisoning, punishing and killing people in order to contain its spread, with no regards to human rights, in the U.S. nothing guarantees that things will go smoothly. Since American people are more divided than ever and solidarity is almost non-existent, people mistrust each other more and more and their political leaders, as Trump, continue to spread misinformation and have cut funding to public health organisms, the situation regarding the spread of the coronavirus in the U.S. may be as even bad as in China, or maybe even worse.

It seems clear that Trump's inconsistent approach to the virus, e.g. say one thing in a press conference, say something less helpful in a tweet and say something completely counterproductive at a political rally is potentially dangerous. Literally within one 24 hour period he's offered 1)stay calm we have our top experts working on this and have taken a number of important steps to prevent the spread of the disease, 2)the do nothing democrats are obstructing our efforts to combat the virus and 3)the virus is a democratic hoax. He's literally a danger to his own base if they believe any of that.
