Gotta agree with Montie here... it's okay to answer questions and teach each other stuff. "GO TO THE GOOGLES" is kind of an obnoxious response, and pretty counter productive in a discussion thread.

 

There's nothing better than, um, pontificating on something I just learned from Wikipedia. I am reading the same Wikipedia article you just read, yet I will not hesitate to lecture you about its contents.

 

"Anti-Pope" is really a whole lot less exciting than the title seems to imply. Yawn. Definitely hard to stay awake in first period during that whole thing.

I think I'd use a different definition for the word 'jerkhole', but I guess that's not within the pope of this thread.

They can't seem to agree: I've seen Latin American, African, and Canadian potential Popes topping the lists in different headlines.

I'm going to wildly speculate that Benny is resigning because of one or more of the following reasons:
He has AIDS. From an African choirboy. Or nun. Either. Both.
It's a step in a legal strategy to protect the church/his successor/himself from the paedophile scandal.
He's being blackmailed/leveraged by differently corrupt Vatican types.

On a more serious note, I think he's doing this as part of his idea of reform. Everyone knew JP2 was a basket case for the last decade or two. He was practically a zombie for his last 2 or 3 years, propped up like Charlton Heston in El Cid, nobody should have to go through that, and it ultimately harmed the reputation of the Catholic church having such a liability as figurehead.

Good riddance to him anyway. He's part of the cult of Theresa as far as I can tell. Let's hope the next papa sees the benefit of reducing (rather than promoting) material poverty and suffering.
