No knock raids should be illegal. Or, at the very least, if they do one, they better be right. If they're wrong, they should be liable for everything.

 

See the main thing here is to remove the police officer's feeling of protection. Right now, a police officer knows that no matter what actions they take, they'll be protected by 1) the use of their gun and 2) the law should they use their gun. A police officer is able to start a fight with anybody they choose because they know that if things don't go their way, they have a gun that they can use to kill the other person and the law will shield them from the consequences. Furthermore, if a police officer decides to fight or attack someone, nobody is legally allowed to defend that person. You're not even legally allowed to defend yourself against a police officer. You literally, by law, have to take the beating that the cop gives you. Even if, after the fact, the police get in trouble (and most of the time they don't), that's not actually stopping the beating you're getting here and now.

These protections: protections from harm and protections from the law, are what allow a cop to beat someone or kill someone. If these protections are taken away, if it becomes legal to beat or kill a cop, to defend yourself or someone else against one, the cop will now have to think twice before actually starting altercations.

 

If you're defending yourself or someone else, it should absolutely be legal to beat and/or potentially kill.

 

Yeah I'm with Vivec, killing a cop in self defense never gets you a fair sentence, but a cop can kill as many innocent people as they want unprovoked. Cops know that even if rightly someone could kill them in self defense, they wont cause the police will just execute them and no one will question it

 

You're misunderstanding what's being proposed here. The proposition is the removal of the law against assaulting a peace officer. It's a specific law and a specific charge. I'm saying that specific law protecting the cops should be removed.

Correct, there are many laws (depending on state) that specifically deal with assault on a peace officer, which carries stricter penalties. It's also what lets cops know that they have special protection from the consequences of their actions. If you see someone beating the **** out of someone else, you can jump and and protect that person, and probably not get charged. If you see a cop beating the **** out of somebody, if you intervene in any way on that person's behalf, you will be hit with a slew of special charges, including assaulting a peace officer.

 

Right, like if you had jumped in and saved Eric Garner you would be arrested and jailed, if not shot and killed with even less accountability than the killing of Garner

 

What would be the con's in the argument to take guns away from all police, except for SWAT teams for things like mass shooter situations, and rely more on tasers instead?

 

Tasers are ineffective on some people. Guns are effective on everyone.

Would be a common argument against such a proposal anyway.

 

I expect another excuse, er, argument would be that the alleged non-white criminal gangs/cartels would supposedly be heavily armed and so the police need guns to survive, and any criticism would be endangering their lives, so how dare you endanger their lives. And those apologists wouldn't mention heavily armed white men who go on murder sprees, they don't count, they're only lone wolves.

(That was satire, just to be clear.)

It would be better if the US did something about the absurd number of guns out there, but that's even less likely to happen than racists admitting they're racist (and violent).

 

SWAT teams could MAYBE be trusted if they became essentially like what police are now. Cause as they stand they are better armed than most soldiers and get called in for just about anything

The Times is just an upmarket Murdoch rag, it lost respectability a while ago and is pretty much on a par with the Telegraph these days
