So Pluto was made not a planet by people who didn't even know what they were talking about?

Minor correction - epilepsy is a preexisting condition in which one is susceptible to some form of seizure

And one I suffer from. So I'm sorry if it seems like a dick move but I have to hide those. It's actually dangerous for me to look at that

Burnt wood? Is that some kind of euphemism?

The reason it was demoted was due to the increasing number of Pluto sized or larger objects. If Pluto were to be a planet again, we'd also have Eris, Ceres, Makemake, and a number of others.

Of course they're not uneducated or anything. But it was voted upon by (a small amount of) scientists outside of the category of specialization

And I don't get why people care so much about Pluto. Look up and you'll see another big ball in space which should have the title "planet"
Likewise, Ceres. Eris. Haumea, Ixion, Orcus, and the ones orbiting other planets, as aformentioned

    Exactly!

They allowed culture to influence a scientific definition. Why does "planet" have to be such a special thing? We don't limit the number of rivers in the world because it's hard to memorize all of them

The big problem with the definition they use is that it's entirely based on location rather than geophysical traits alone. It's not sensible

Switch Mercury and Pluto. Their titles as defined by the IAU are reversed. Switch Mercury and Ganymede. Again, suddenly one is "unplanetized"

The only way for something to "unbecome" a planet, by a logical scientific definition, is for the Death Star to drop by

We should have just stopped with Saturn. It was so much tidier that way.

Hi y'all. Got the project done. [face_relieved] Wish I didn't have class late tonight but oh well. [face_sigh]

I'm also an introvert, very much so. [face_batting] I find it really hard to make small talk w/people, even at family gatherings. And I don't have many (honestly, any) irl friends, though that's something I'm trying to work on. I've always found it hard to talk/relate to people around my age, when so many of my interests (movie, book, tv, hobby wise) are usually things that older people than myself would be interested in, not so much my peers. You tend to want to stop trying to engage w/people after getting blank stare after blank stare when you mention the latest movie from the '30s or '40s you've watched, your giddiness upon watching Gilligan's Island recently & finding it hysterical, or the latest cross stitch you're working on.

I saw that you tagged me after I'd left Del, sorry. :p I had no intention of posting then; was literally just going through the posts I'd missed. [face_laugh]

Also because I learned this method of remembering the planets:

    My (Mercury)
    Very (Venus)
    Excited (Earth)
    Mother (Mars)
    Just (Jupiter)
    Served (Saturn)
    Us (Uranus)
    Nine (Neptune)
    Pizzas (Pluto)

I don't think I can ever not think of Pluto as a planet, and have to remind myself that it isn't anymore. :p
    (I think since they've gotten rid of P, N=Nachos now. :p)
