Always loved Super Mario 2. It's crazier and more surreal than the first. (Even with its development backstory) And you can play as other characters. If there's a second Mario movie they need to incorporate elements from this game.

For me it introduced one of my favorite characters to the Mushroom Kingdom, Shy Guy:

The movie did use Shy Guys, Snifits and Bob-ombs. And Peach used her floating dress ability. You also had some musical references in there. Would not be surprised if other Easter eggs in the background also originated from SMB2.

They did, but sounded more like the higher-pitched voice from MK8 and other places. The Snifit actually talked, though.

That was the scariest part of the film, if it helps any. A couple moments where Bowser is a little deranged, but he's his goofy self most of the time.

Well The Mario Movie passed Rise of Skywalker in gross. I suppose this means we will get many more video game movies.

I hope we get SinStar, Defender, and Joust adapted, :p

SMB 2 Movie is almost assured.

I suspect if Nintendo is feeling their power in the film world, they will dictate the terms of a Metroid movie next. It is a property kind of on the backburner just now, and a film adaptation with the goodwill SMB is getting could be just the thing to launch it. The real question is whether they try to appeal to a different target age, or simply repeat the SMB formula and keep it light. I could see either working and/or being total disasters, so it's the marketing research people's job to crack that one.

The Golden Egg is a Zelda Movie...but they will have to be very VERY careful with that one. Honestly, I don't know if they can pull it off as a single film...which is all the more reason it would have to wait.

Zelda could be done as a single film with the right story choice. Many would need to be two films to adapt, however. With the right planning you could pare down repeated elements and save certain things for future films, which would whittle down the necessary runtime in order to tell them.

For instance, ALTTP could be done as a single film, but you’d have to cut some Dark World dungeons down to a montage or something and do 3 light / 3 dark.

Had a nice little quick run in NES Metroid just now, 15 missles, 1 energy pack, bombs and long beam, before 1st death, which was largely due to how all easy it seemed after so long. Then reality set it, got lost, and died.

"Then reality set it, got lost, and died." is the gaming mantra of the NES player.

Metriod’s reveal that it was a lady all along was the “I am your father,” moment in gaming. It was amazing.

I would love a Zelda movie. CG animated probably. And although I think focusing on one legendary story is the way to go, I'd love for them to work in the nature that the myth and legend happens again and again over time in different ways.

I think Metroid could go CG animated or Live-action with lots of CG...but each would target a different age group.

I think if they wanted to reach for the skies, Zelda would be live-action in the vein of a LOTR still adaptation. That could bridge demographics in ways even SMB hasn't, which could greatly expand the box office.

    But.

Animation allows for easier voiceover work to adapt the film for a worldwide audience. So if a massive global purse is sufficient, with some older audiences turned away, then I could see them going animation every single time.

I think trying to adapt Zelda into live action realism would take something away from the soul of it. Ya know? Hyrule has always had such a rich stylistic fantasy look to it, and that would be lost if just made to look like LOTRs…the Witcher…etc.

I wouldn’t mind the animation of BotW and Tears of the Kingdom being an inspiration for the animation, that impressionism/realism style.

There's room to experiment, depending on the story. I agree that making it a LOTR clone is a mistake. The story may have not been that great, but the colorful visuals of the Warcraft film would be a good place to start. I also think combining Conan the Barbarian (as far as telling an epic, mythical story about a character who doesn't talk very much, while simultaneously relying on the music and visual metaphors to tell the story) with Labyrinth (for the more imaginative characters and creatures, while still keeping things disturbing in a fun way) would be the strongest approach for any of the more "realistic" LOZ stories like OOT, ALTTP, TP or the NES games, etc.

Because, ultimately, any Zelda story adapted to film has to rely on the music and shot design to tell its story. The actual visual look of the film, the live action casting, etc comes second to that by a mile.

I like the inspirations you mention that should be used. If there was any of the games they should adapt or stay close to in story telling, Ocarina of Time would be good. The time travel element would allow the 2hr film to jump to Link as an adult, and you could montage certain temples, and on a few linger.

I feel like OOT is too obvious of a choice to go with. People will often suggest that one off the bat because of how popular it is, or that how it used to be the start of the timeline (but it's not anymore, so that isn't really a valid reason anymore). But I feel like that is definitely a story that should be split across two films- and be something that can be built up to.

(Easy enough split too, since you have the Phantom Ganon battle to make for a good ending for the 1st half (which also allows you to work in the start of the adult timeline events and such) and the wider implications of The Imprisoning War as a big finale for the 2nd half).

Like, ALTTP can fit into one film with some montage and care. If that's successful enough to get a OOT 2-parter banked, then you move ahead with that prequel duology (and any choice to split the timeline for future projects, or streamline some kind of plan into a singular timeline). If it's not successful enough, you go sideways with a smaller-scale story like Link's Awakening (which can be worked, as originally intended, into being a sequel to ALTTP) that can also be easily told in a single film.
