that was another thing i almost mentioned. i think the prevalence of singing competitions and people trying to copy that style and most often failing has ruined whitney for a lot of people. i'm not really a fan of that theatrical style either, but whitney had a rare gift that can't be denied.

Yeah, she did it well. With Aguilera and Carey, it comes off as forced. Hers was a natural ability. She had more control of her voice.

whitney was always tasteful in her embellishments. she never went furiously up and down the scale just to show off like a lot the singers that followed her. if you listen to her ssb, it's different enough to be her own interpretation, but it remains concise, direct, and powerful, both technically and emotionally. she knows intuitively where to be subtle and where to really hammer it. she doesn't draw any bits out unnecessarily. there is no waffling, no meandering. i didn't know there was a lip-sync controversy, and it would go a long way to explain her relaxed and supremely confident demeanor during the performance, but she still sang the damned thing, and its still her interpretation, and it's still amazing!

Very sad. Its upsetting to see such a talent wasted. @};-

That said, I greatly prefered Dolly Partons version of I Will Always Love You.

Man, it's always sad to see legends go early, especially if it could have been prevented. :(

Indeed. When Dolly sings those words you really feel like shes losing something and its heartbreaking.

When Whitney sang them it was just irritating.[face_talk_hand]

Looks like they did say they found water in her lungs, even though the autopsy results won't be available for weeks.

Awful way to go, RIP. @};-

Y'know, as tasteless and insensitive as it is to joke about the death of a celebrity with whom I had no personal connection or even admiration of, there are some really hilarious jokes coming out of this thread, and for that I applaud you all.

Billy Sutton died the same day.....

I don't know, but I feel there is alot being made about someone who hasn't really had a hit or much of a career in 15 odd years due to her 'problems'. I know we tend to put stars on pedestals and when they pass we are all a little shocked or saddened (especially when its in a premature way or by suspicious or avoidable circumstances) but like some have said here, everything that is born, dies....it's a fact of life. Gone too soon, I am sure, but watching the 'Red Carpet' by 'E' before the Grammys, you'd think Whitney wrote every song, broke every barrier, freed slaves, broke down teh Berlin Wall and stopped both World Wars! The way they describe her makes her sound like she was a perfect Angel from heaven who'd never done anything wrong or made any mistakes in her life. Granted, we don't look back at peoples faults but we generally don't suddenly turn people into saints after they pass. I keep hearing how she changed everyones lives, how she influenced everyone, even Billy Ray Cyrus said Miley was influenced by her..... My daughter is only 3 or 4 years younger than Miley, and she knew who Whitney was, but I had to point out her songs on the radio, as she didn't know her from any other singer. No, I am not saying 'Forget her!' but I am saying, perspective please? Especially from the Media.

And I do not mean to offend anyone here, these are just my personal thoughts.

OMG unwarranted celebrity worship? We've never seen that before! And I have just as much of a problem with the attempt to canonize individual military personnel who are fighting a pointless war of imperialism. Yesh, it's sad he died in that he was a human who probably didn't deserve it, but he wasn't any more or less important than some washed up pop star with drug problems.

Erm, this is pretty much exclusively what we do. With the exception of clearly horrific people (dictators, mass murderers, etc) almost anyone that has done even ambiguously positive things in their life will have those things trumpeted endlessly at the time of their death. So while I agree that the proceedings around Ms. Houston are probably overblown, they're not at all unusual.

it was the same when michael jackson died. we live in a culture that worships celebrity. not saying it's right, just that it's not at all surprising.

    also lol @ pedastools

Whitney, although your only impact on my life was The Bodyguard film, and your version of that Dolly Parton song, that stayed in the UK charts for weeks afterwards, I am sorry to see you go. You were good in that film.

I just wanted to congratulate the JCC on getting away from that habit of posting a bunch of "face_roses." Glad to see we are beginning to give people some dignity in their death.
