Helsinki Day 1 Part 2: Arrival at Suomenlinna Island

Quickly before we got on the ferry, I spotted a crowd gathered around this building along the waterfront:

Given the Finnish flag on the building, I'd assume it was some kind of 'changing of the guard' kind of ceremony, never figured out the precise details though, because we had a boat to catch! :D

Suomelinna (meaning literally 'castle of Finland') Island is one of the many strung out in the bay of Helsinki. Originally the structures on the island were built by the Swedish, who used it as a fort outpost for defending the region. Later the Russians took control in 1808 and added their own embellishments, before eventually being handed over to the Finnish when they gained independence in 1918.

Since 1973 it's been run by civilian administration, and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. There are about 900 permanent residents, and is still, to this day, used as a minimum security prison for a small subset of convicts, who do maintenance work across the island.

Here's the view from the arrival dock, back towards mainland Helsinki (if you squint to the left of a cruise ship in the background, you can see the Helsinki Cathedral I highlighted in the previous post):

The lighthouse and customs building, just beside the last shot:

Some of the residential homes, in what was called the Russian Merchants' Quarter:

Just through the gate under the lighthouse is a clearing where the Suomenlinna Church is located:

It was an Eastern Orthodox garrison church for the soldiers positioned on the island, is located at the highest point in the fort complex, and also doubles as a lighthouse :) See also the repurposed cannons holding up the chain barrier.

Part of the middle of the island, showing one the bridges linking smaller islets together:

A glimpse down the tunnels of the fortress walls:

In one small square is the ornate grave of Augustin Ehrensvärd, the Swedish creator behind the fortress:

I took some interest in the detailing on the tomb, including these baby heads which seem to be enduring an existential terror :p:

A dry dock containing old decommissioned ships. The church is in the background, and that large metal object in the right foreground is an old dock gate:

    A funny safety sign:

Note the three languages, Finnish, Swedish, and English (Fallrisk in Swedish is funny [face_tee_hee]).

Some of the more rugged coastal areas below the fortress walls, showing off the Baltic:

A distant shot once again showing the Helsinki Cathedral way off in the distance:

    A nice park and cafe:

The heavy cannons pointing out to sea:

Next Time: Wrapping up the island and showing off the last Finnish Submarine...

Not that far west and thankfully my place is not haunted.[face_praying]

I would stay for a week at the Overlook though.
I'd be scared, but I'd do it. [face_pumpkin]

I've been to the real Overlook in Estes Park Colorado. Its called something else but it's really nice. The Stanley Hotel. It's right in town so not really remote. I never stayed there (its super expensive and I was broke at the time) but its a popular hotel. If it's that haunted no one would stay there. I did go in the lobby. They shot the miniseries there. Estes Park is a nice resort town I used to hike in the surrounding hills quite a bit with my Beagle Roscoe.

its a beautiful town with great hiking. its the nicest place I've been to in the US. I lived in Fort Collins which was about an hour away. there was an old hiking trail near there called Lions Gulch that had the remains of an old village homestead about 5 miles in. My Beagle loved it.

yup from my readings the real Stanley hotel is haunted by one room. A suicide I think.
I don't come across it often in my database (or books :p ) often though. So it's a minor haunting and not everyone sees or feels something that stays in that particular room.

    Thanks for watching.
(didn't make, not my channel lol)

This vid cracked me up cause the journalists are dressed up on this cheesy set. Neat looking hotel.
Interesting they have added things like the maze and bar after the notoriety.
And Kubrick did not film here.
