Discussion Should the Anthology films have opening crawls?

Some people are acting as if the opening crawls are what make SW films special. They are not. They're quirky window-dressing. Fun yes. Essential no.

 

Great thread. I believe in all the star wars films should open this way This will be the nod to the old school pulp serials. Everything after that will just change with filmaking. The opening crawl will be the only consistent force connecting all of them.

 

Opening crawl but with new unique theme music.

 

I think that the constants across all SW movies should be an opening crawl and the theme. The opening crawl is an easy way to set the story quickly and I like that aspect of them.

 

I think "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away" should open every single Star Wars film. It's actually that, more than the crawl, which immediately immerses me into the GFFA. You immediately feel like a kid about to be told a great bedtime story. Only you'll be able to watch this one unfold before your eyes.

I personally want each film to have a crawl as well, but would not be overly miffed if they went with different styles. Including cold opens before the title, which could be cool.

 

For me though the opening crawls work because the feed into the settings, grand events happening on a grand scale, if you have say a Han Solo film with a much narrower more personal focus I'm not sure it would fit.

It would be interesting is they could come up with something unique for the anthology films that could become their trademark

 

That's actually a good point. For instance an opening crawl for rogue one could work as its setting the scene on the empire, the formation of the rebellion and maybe some events post ROTS, whereas the Han Solo movie arguably might not need that kind of prologue.

 

I would model it like the Clone Wars and Rebels. No opening Crawl, but a similar title sequence, with similar, but not exact music.

Main saga films yes, spinoffs no.

 

As much as I'm hyped for this movie I will be dissapointed if there is no opening crawl.

Interesting. That would rule out the following as Star Wars films:

Empire Strikes Back: pans down to a Star Destroyer after the crawl, not a planet.
Phantom Menace: pans down to a Consular Space Cruiser, not a planet.
Attack of the Clones: pans UP to a planet.

But yeah, pedantry aside, planets show up pretty soon after the opening crawls of each film.

 

I would actually prefer they had something different, to distinguish them fro the saga. Maybe an opening cut scene like TCW

 

I wouldn't mind the traditional crawl, but i also wouldn't mind if they switch things up a bit. Especially if the exposition is delivered more smoothly through other methods of introduction, a la TCW.

 

Don't really mind either way, but it would feel a bit strange to see a Star Wars film with no crawl.

It's not, it's a spinoff. Same way the Ewok movies and the Clone Wars movie didn't have crawls.

 

I'd prefer that they do but it's not a must like with the main saga films.

Yes. At least in my opinion, the movie would seem somewhat strange without the opening crawl. However, I wouldn't mind too much if they choose not to include one.

 

I think they should at least stroll or maybe a brisk walk.

 

I'd be down with this. It preserves some of what people expect, but also adds a touch of uniqueness that clearly sets it apart from the "main" movies. I also agree with Jabba, I'd really like if they keep the "A long time ago" at the start of the Anthology films.

 

I've thought about this and decided that I'd like to see some unique non-crawl openings. But "a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away" should start every film. That's the real transporting text, IMO. The crawl is secondary.
