In regards to the movie being overdone: you have just tapped into the psyche of Mel Brooks. All his movies are over done. If something is funny once, it's funny three times, in his opinion. That said, I'm still a big fan of his work and I think Young Frankenstein is one of the funniest movies ever made.

Spaceballs is the funniest movie ever!

Dark Helmet: What the hell am I looking at? When does this happen in the movie?
Colonel Sandurz: You're looking at now, sir. Everything that happens now is happening now.
Dark Helmet: What hapened to then?
    Colonel Sandurz: We passed then.
    Dark Helmet: When?
Colonel Sandurz: Just now. We're at now now.
Dark Helmet: Go back to then.
    Colonel Sandurz: When?
    Dark Helmet: Now!
    Colonel Sandurz: Now?
    Dark Helmet: Now!
    Colonel Sandurz: I can't.
    Dark Helmet: Why?
    Colonel Sandurz: We missed it.
    Dark Helmet: When?
    Colonel Sandurz: Just now.
Dark Helmet: When will then be now?
    Colonel Sandurz: Soon.
    Dark Helmet: How Soon?

Somebody had mentioned the opening sequence being so long with the ship and all that blah, blah, blah and a yakkety shmackety...

Well, the intro of the ship is so long because they aren't spoofing Star Wars there. They're spoofing Battlestar Galactica.

Don't you just love the architecture on top of the Presidents Ball on the planet Spaceball?
