There are several instances in the OT where R2 could have just flown out of danger. I think that was a missed opportunity.
Agreed. I'd have preferred R2 be more like a simple astromech droid in the PT and less like a walking talking swiss army knife. That's something I always hate about films-not just SW. I hate when certain characters just happen to have the exact right tool or capability to deal with literally ANY situation, no matter how bizarre. It REALLY stretches believability.
Hang on, are you saying that in the OT you want them to change a scene to make R2 fly? The addition of R2 being able to fly in AOTC was a facepalm moment for me, because you just know that by doing it some fans will say “well why didn’t he do that in the originals then”? You’ll then have the defenders saying “obviously someone had them removed in the intervening years”. It becomes a circular argument. Like I said it was an unnecessary addition for me.
It's not about what I want. It's absurd that a character that can fly gets stuck and is knocked about so easily, even needing a crane to hoist it around. It's a continuity error that could have been corrected when there was an opportunity.
The continuity error isn’t the fault of the original films though. Which would mean changing scenes in the originals to suit what they added in the prequels.
A few I can come up with now; Best - The new Emperor in TESB. Ians tone of voice is haunting and menacing - Han calling Jabba "You're a wonderful human being" - Celebration that the Empire is over in ROTJ - Haydens Anakin as a Force Ghost
I hate the fact they made Artoo fly in the prequels, but he's an astromech. It actually makes sense that he'd have thrusters for getting around during EVAs.
