I hope to see this either Thursday or Monday. Even though I was let down by the first one. The biggest thing that bothered me was the lack of piffy comments. Call me a nit picker, but damnit I want my Spider-Man to be making stupid observations and insulting people while he fights.

I saw it about 12 hours ago. Very entertaining, though I did enjoy Punisher more - because I'm a bigger Punisher fan than a Spidey fan. ;) Cute reference to Dr Strange in the film too, plus some other Spidey lore.

Great movie 4.5/5 stars. Loved the Evil Dead Chainsaw tribute!

Spidey unmasked turning and seeing MJ

MJ running out of the wedding (very graduate like)

MJ returning to Peter in wedding gown.

I actually disliked the part where they picked up Spiderman.
It was over-sentimental. I think one average Joe leaning down and picking up Spiderman, and walking down the train while the crowd parted in the middle would have been more methaphorical. The man would symbolize the stranger Peter had always been saving, and who in return saves him as an inspired citizen.

The whole "crowd-surfing while unconcious" thing just looked dumb and was just shoved in your face.

Crowd picking up unmasked Spidey (very matrix revolutions)

    Worst. Compliment. Ever.

Now that scene seems even worse.

I was surprised just how much I enjoyed this.

Spider-Man (2002) was all hype, and modestly entertaining in solely a comic-book-visual-way.

I'm not a huge Spidey fan, but I do like the character and universe enough to hold a passing interest.

This is a rare sequel: bigger, louder, bolder and more fun, intelligent, and memorable.

    Go see it.

Best Superhero Flick Ever (per Roger Ebert)?

    No.

    But it's certainly up there.

    +++Minor Spoilers Ahead+++

I think I liked it better than part 1. I like Octavious a little more than the Goblin. I thought that at some points there was a little too much explanation in the dialogue. But what made me enjoy it the most was Raimi's cinematic style. And with making this kind of a movie it's well accepted. Like the zooms, and the sound effects. And if you're paying attention you can see some horror aspects. I think it makes it more interesting and enjoyable when he puts some comedy sequences in there like "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head".

Liked seeing the cameo of Bruce Campbell. Did you catch Stan Lee? And it was nice to see Dafoe in there. I was hopeing that they could move on to Venom or something for a third installment. But it seems more likely that we'll finnally settle the fued between Osbourne and Parker.

    I give it a satisfied 4 out of 5. :)

Just got back from an afternoon screening and I am almost at a loss for words to describe the feeling of joy inside me after having seen this flick. ... Almost.

With the first Spier-Man, Raimi and co. showed that, yes, a boy can spin a web; but that's about all they showed us. Now with the second film, we have an immense and wholly satisfying payoff to the first chapter that works on all levels. Spider-Man 2 isn't just the best super-hero movie ever made, it is, perhaps, the greatest cinematic work of the CGI era of movie making combining skillful action set pieces, humor, clever in jokes and references for fans of Spidey lore, and a truly epic story that doesn't sacrifice character moments for mindless stunt work and effects shots (and this is coming from a devout Star Wars fan). Yeah, the action sequences do kick serious ass, and yes, the effects are much improved over the last film; however, all of that stems, and is (surprisingly) secondary to the human story that binds this film together. The emotion in this film is palpable and totally grabs and involves you in these characters' lives. I loved the scene when Peter tells Aunt May the horrible truth about the night his uncle died, the moment Harry finds out the man who killed his father is his best friend Peter Parker; the list goes on and on, with one powerful scene after another.

Director Sam Raimi has been one of the most innovative filmmakers working in the mainstream for quite awhile now. His passion and love for this character and comic books in general is visible in every frame of this film. Unlike certain other filmmakers with a similar low-budget/horror background, Raimi retains and brings his personal filmmaking style to the world of Spider-Man and big budget filmmaking and actually does something unique with the potentially tedious action scenes; he makes this film his own. I honestly can't picture anyone else directing this film. Spider-Man 2 rocks-Believe it.

Just got back an hour ago and I must say that, overall, this was a very good movie.

About the first half of the film is kinda hit-or-miss though, with a fairly rushed setup for Doc Ock and a few of the early MJ/Peter scenes not hitting the right notes they should have and some distractingly goofy moments; but once you get past the plot setup the film really hits all cylinders and just kicks some serious ass.

For most of the film, though, the action, humor and most importantly the character moments just hit the right notes and make you feel very happy. The 'tiger' bit at the end had the whole audience roaring.

And, I must say, they pulled off the physical aspects of Doc Ock very well- I'm so glad they used animatronics when they could- it adds a very menacing layer of realism to them that is lost in the CGI versions, so the mix works well.

The whole coming-and-going of the spider powers, though, wasn't really explained at all though- they suggest it's just a mental stress thing, but then that doesn't explain why they just went away completely when he overcame that. In the end, no real cause is given.

Still, as I said, the great outweighs the mixed portions of the film, and so I'd say that averages out to be very good. The first film may have had amore consistant and less mixed tone to the film as a whole, but the sequel's second half blows away the best of the first movie.

Best superhero movie ever? No- X2 still holds that title and I'd suggest even the first Burton Batman film is better overall, but this one is damn good and is probably better than the first one overall, given how entertaining the second half of the film is.

The soundtrack for this one is a little dissapointing- "Vindicated" is an ok song, but "Hero" from the first film really had that emotional/inspirational connection/impact that tied in better to the best themes of Spiderman's story, IMO. In other words, "Vindicated" makes for nice radio play while you're in your car, but "Hero" kinda makes you want to go out and save the world ::)

Now, the question is what villians will we see for SM3? I think it's obvious Hobgoblin is a lock, the real question is if we'll get a second villian, as they could easily do The Lizard now or (my personal favorite) even Venom (symbiotes lead to Carnage!).

Oh, and JJ ruled this movie, btw. Perfect.

All that I can say is: WOW. This movie rocked. The action, style and story, all well done, a nicely done sequel that even managed to top the first one. I'll have to try and type out a full review later, but not for a little while...

    I have to agree.

Both X2 and Batman (1989) are more satisfying than Spider-Man 2.

I'd add the first two Superman films to the list, too.

If the first half of Spider-Man 2 was just as intense as the second half, I'd make a case for Best Superhero Flick.

I know exposition is important, but the first half sure did drag during certain parts.

Wow, I loved this move! It was so great. IMHO it was the best super-hero movie (and one of my fav now), I agree with Ebert. But Spider-man has always been my favorite.

    Oh god no.

The entire story for Venom - be it mainstream Venom or Ultimate Venom - just would not fit the tone of the films. I mean, they'd have to make a Secret Wars film with all the major heros - and yes it's a comic book wet dream, but it's also never going to happen - and then explain the story with Eddie Brock. Ultimate Venom is a little easier to do but it basically doesn't fit the idea of ordinary people with extraordinary gifts.

What's more, Raimi is a fan of the older Spiderman material, so none of the McFarlane or later era villains will ever make it, full stop. You have, pretty clearly, two choices for villain next film - the Lizard, or Green Goblin II.

It'll take a lot of hard work for them to top Spider-Man 2! I loved it! It really captured the comic book where Peter Parker's life just sucks. He can't catch a break. He's the Charlie Brown of Superheroes! The fights with Doc Ock are spectacular, especially aboard the elevated train. Alfred Molina plays him very cool and scary and doesn't go over-the-top like Willem Defoe did. The hospital scene is TERRIFYING. Tobey's best moment for me was his confession scene to Aunt May. The line "Uncle Ben was killed for being the only one to do the right thing." made me cry. The cameos by Bruce Campbell and Hal Sparks(I love the 80's) were funny and so was J.K. Simmons' performance as Jameson. The "Raindrops Keeps Falling On My Head" montage was offputing at first but then it was really hilarious at the end. Favorite lines: "If promises were crackers, my daughter would be fat!" and "My back!"

Great film! Loved it because everything I wanted to see happen to Spidey/Peter happened. It was simply perfect.

I was also amazed at how poignant the film was. There were at least two scenes - the train scene, and when Mary Jane finally learns the truth - that made me tear up. :_|

Oh, and a basset hound! Woo hoo!!

I have a question for all here. Do you think Spiderman 2 could be the first comic book film where they focused on the main character almost too much?

Because ultimately a hero is only as good as his villian and while Alfred Molina is a fabulous actor, don't you think they didn't use him enough?

I mean, you could techincally take out the Dr. Ock character out of the movie and you wouldn't really be missing much from a plot stand point.

Plus, not many people have pointed this out, Spiderman 2 is closely related to Superman II. They're almost the same movie if you really look at them and compare them.

    I don't know. Maybe I'm too picky.
