Don't get me wrong. I wasn't disagreeing with anything he's been saying. And I think what you've said in your post here is spot-on; I agree with all of it.

I was criticizing the manner in which he (and others) have been going about it. I think it's possible--and preferable--to encourage people to be better and do better without shaming them if they come up short in their good intentions. It was the rude attitude I was taking issue with, not the content of his criticism (which I again affirm is valid).

On my Facebook today I posted a link to an article that criticized merely checking in and doing nothing else, which has a list of things to do concretely--petitions to sign, numbers to call, etc. I work a 9-to-5, so I plan on calling some of those numbers myself when I have a couple days off at the beginning of next week. And I just signed the petitions. (Granted, I guess this paragraph could be seen as virtue signaling too, so in some ways I guess it's an unavoidable trap. )

Yeah I had no idea at first you were talking exclusively about FB and this goofy check in thing. I just thought you meant everyone who wasn't there on-site in ND was worthless.

 

President Obama says that Army Corps are looking at the possibility of rerouting the pipeline away from the Native Americans' lands.

 

Yeah and he also says he's going to let things play out over the next several weeks. If they genuinely cared about tribal sovereignty, they wouldn't have routed the pipeline through there to begin with and disturbed Indian gravesides.

 

Who are you trying to kid, you're behind the pipeline.

 

I'm not sure if the White House was initially responsible for the location of the pipeline?

 

"They" as in the government agencies, not specifically the WH. But I'm sure the BIA did know.

Haven't been paying attention to this...but if it were so simple a matter to reroute the pipeline then shouldn't this have been resolved a long time ago?

 

It's not just about the route of the pipeline. New pipelines increase the capacity to transport (and extract and burn) petroleum.

This is a terrifying harbinger; in the months and years to come, expect the sort of police-state crackdowns that are erupting in North Dakota right now.

Number one, apparently the Army Corps of Engineers is fine with Energy Transfer Partners going against its injunction and continuing to dig for the pipeline, but will start prosecuting protestors for trespassing. In the middle of a blizzard. On treaty lands, no less! Clearly, all men are created equal, except corporations, for they are above the law.

Number two, how is imposing fines on people bringing in supplies at all legal? How can the governor issue an evacuation order for people there voluntarily? While installing a roadblock on the fastest route for emergency services? Can we just make up laws as we please now? Apparently you can in North Dakota.

And let's just remember that this is being brought to you by North Dakota taxpayers, at the rate of $10 million at the state level, and $8 million for Morton County alone. Not counting legal costs, which are over $1.5 million. All to bang through this pipeline for the Governor's buddies. But hey, what's a little financial overspending when you're morally bankrupt already?




I have to post these here, just in case someone in North Dakota has a shred of decency left and will take five minutes to let their elected official know this is not okay.
