So my fairly steep climb back to .500 is complete for now. The learning curve after being thrown into ladder and league matches was quite sharp for me and I lost so many matches before I finally got used to the speed of the game. And that's only Bronze league. It only gets worse from here. :p Anyway, I'm glad that I'm back to .500 and ideally I'll build on it and get into Silver soon enough. That's what things will get really interesting, I think.

AJ posted this over in the Arena.

Split 4 games last night. My TvZ is terrible and I always just get slaughtered. Very frustrating.

I really liked the epic mothership game he posted a week or two ago.

Any game when Kiwikaki goes mothership is epic, I've found.

Split my six games last night. All three losses came to zerg. I have no legitimate strategy that works against zerg and it seems everything I try just gets shut down by mutas. It's maddening.

Husky cast one of my replays. I never realized how badly I suck until I heard the commentating from Husky. It really makes me want to get a lot better than I am and I plan on focusing on what he recommends.

The Huskycast of my game is the recent "Let's Learn Starcraft 2" entry. It's awful. My moniker is tednova.

Here's why I went such a screwy build. First, it was zerg. I always get baneling busted so I thought well, I try to reinforce the front gate with factories while trying to pump out helions. that didn't work so well. Then once the muta harass started hitting, I thought, okay, I need to expand but I can't because the mutas are causing a ton of havoc and I need more marines...and possibly transition to Thors.

I really played poorly during the game. I usually never go the build i did but I had to try something different because I was sick of getting busted at my front door. The problem was that I never could expand properly and I never felt safe enough to expand. Fortunately, my opponent was no better than I.

Once I got a few Thors on the field, along with the marines, it was an easy march to victory.

But yeah, I have a helluvalot of things to work on before I'll even sniff moving into the Silver league.

I played two games last night. Both were TvT and both were over 40 minutes long. Maps were LT and Metalopolis and both were victories for me. Which was good because I was unfavored in one matchup and even in the other...so I got a lot of points. It was macro intensive to say the least. The best thing though was I had just watched and listened to husky's commentary about my noob game. So I was pumping workers and expanding even when I didn't feel totally safe. I also tried to pressure when I expanded in order to decrease his army size and direct my opponents' attention elsewhere. It was fun and now I'm over .500.

    What's your character code?

Yeah, I was 23-31 at one point, now I'm 93-69(I think, something close to that at least)

The thing that sent me into a great win loss record was also the worker count. I used to make around 16 or so workers per base, and that just doesn't cut it. Especially playing as Zerg, which is the macro race.

EDIT: Jazib, you know I'm so down.

I just watched your game poly, and yeah, there's a few things you could work on, but you're not as far from silver as you think.

Thanks, AJ. I just have such problems with zerg. It's a mental thing. When I see that I'm hitting a zerg opponent, I immediately tense up because I can rarely handle the prevalent strategy of muta/ling/baneling or even the baneling busting. It's been rough. Like I said above, that's why I did so many "weird" things. Once the muta harass started, I just lost all train of thought on how I needed to counter it. Fortunately, my opponent wasn't that good or he'd have had me cold.

Still, I'm pretty proud I made it to the Huskychannel.

I played a game the next day focusing on what Husky recommended and observed and totally wasted my opponent. It was glorious.

    Worker count FTW.

I mostly play 4v4. It's a bit of a strange format, because of how completely silly games can get. Some maps more than others. On Extinction, the really short rush distance and shared base has led to amazingly silly games where one side spawns in as four zerg, leading to four six pools, leading to some major pain. On others, I've seen Megaton devolve into WWI, with siege tanks basically lining the centerline of the map without anyone able to progress in either direction. And everything in between.

This morning, I played a terrible game where one guy with Reapers systematically destroyed my allies' economies over and over again. I was zerg; speedlings and a pair of spine crawlers kept him off. A game or two later, I ran into him again, this time I was playing human on Lava Flows. He ran up into an allies mineral line, and killed all my allies' workers. Then he bounced up to mine, where my marines were waiting. Didn't even have to stim. The reapers all died horrible, horrible deaths with no loss to me. Meanwhile, MY Reapers ate his mineral line, and then his expansions' mineral line, before getting eaten by a huge muta swawm. I shrugged, dropped seven towers on my mineral line, got the range and armor building upgrades, left my surplus marines in place. The ally that got destroyed by the Reapers got destroyed again by the mutas, who then flew directly into my mineral line from the best possible angle (for me). I think that about twenty-five came in; I think that about four got out, at the loss of two towers and a few marines and workers for me.

I've never tried laddering in 4v4's(and if I have, it was so long ago that I already forgot about it :p) but I've played a few custom 4v4's with some friends, and yeah, things can get out of hand quickly. Seems almost standard play to 6pool if 3 or 4 players are zerg on one side.

I had a game once with 8 maxed out armies meeting in the middle of the map. Not even joking, 3 of my friend's got dropped from the game as the battle was going on. lol

A game that I played yesterday: I random teamed into a match where we went up against four zerg, three of whom went roaches and one of whom went zerglings. Shared base map, and two of my allies went down fast. My stalkers picked off reinforcements trickling in on their part but didn't dare attack the main force; my ally who wasn't devestated got two Void Rays on the field, and cooked their roaches and zerglings. Then my blink-Stalkers and his Void Rays spent enough time harassing all over the map that we were able to build expansion advantage, and we kept forcing fights that we won without taking much damage.

Thanks to GREAT scouting, I was able to take on corrupters and mutas, while the guy with the voids handled roaches and zerglings. We gathered up when we saw Hydras, and just kept up a hit and run offense all game. We were able to double expand, and while the other side kept expanding, we kept killing their expansions. My two allies that died early were able to somewhat rebuild, and in the end we were able to overcome.

    I love that in 4v4.

Got owned hard last night on Metalopolis by the zerg. I tried to go 2 rax, 1 factory pressure but it was easily deflected. In the end, he had 20 Brood Lords that just ripped me to shreds. It was ugly.

Otherwise, I just keep going on little streaks. I'll win 2 and then lose 3. Then win 3. It's maddening. The zerg is my kryptonite. Perhaps if I can't beat them, I need to join them.

So I finally got out of the practice league where in the last 10-15 games I played pretty well. But since the placement matches and now bronze league games I'm constantly getting my ass kicked. [face_frustrated]

It's a steep learning curve in Bronze.

The only piece of advice I offer is: worker count, worker count, and worker count.

Last night I had a 5-0 run against various Protoss and Terran opponents. There were epic matches and some that were far too brief.

Then this morning I went 0-3...all to Zerg opponents. ZERG!!!!!!!!!!![face_beatup]

Up to 28th in my Bronze League. Slow going.

Learned the value of the point defense drone tonight against Protoss in a heavy macro game. I went 1 rax FE; protoss went initially with blink stalkers. It was a little hectic for a while trying to fend them off. He tech switched to DTs. That was easy to handle with comsats. But he just had this huge army of stalkers. So, since I knew DTs were on the field, I got Ravens for detection and the PDD came in huge at key moments in the battles. Because of the PDDS my medivacs were saved, plus the vikings for colossi, and the Ravens themselves. Not to mention the shielding they offered to my ground army. He had way more units but they couldn't do any damage because the PDD ate the Stalkers' blasts for lunch. Very valuable tool, imo.

Yeah, the PDD is very underused. It's because most Terran players are mouthbreathers who stick to marine-marauder in every game in every situation. :p
