Tonight's episode was awesome- satisfies my alternate universe addiction and my fleet junkie appreciation ;) The extended, single-shots of dogfighting around and through the nooks and cranies of the Daedalus was just pure  [face_love] :*

I wonder how much of a threat these Frankenborgs will end up being- a one-shot deal down the road, or the new big baddies to replace the Asurans? Afterall, it's inevitable they'll end up being a threat in the real reality- as we've seen time and time again in Trek, SG-1 & Doctor Who, alternate universes only exist so the bad stuff can happen to them first, so we can be warned in time to be saved or save ourselves ;)

Oh god, I hope they're a one off. Because obviously, if it happens in a parallel universe, it'll happen in the one that we're in. This has been done how many times in SG-1? Twice? Three times?

I do admit, the dogfights and action was pretty cool here.

I expect an announcement for SGU really soon, then. I'm very surprised they'd go ahead without using SGA as a back-up/ratings anchor in case SGU isn't a hit.

Oh, well, all good things, right? SGA did manage to equal SG-1's original Showtime run, at least.

Wow, I was kind of expecting it to go on at least one more year.

    Quest, you were right:

    Stargate Universe Coming

SCI FI Channel is set to announce the pickup of Stargate Universe, the third series in the long-running franchise, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

News of Universe comes on the heels of SCI FI's announcement that the current Stargate Atlantis will not receive a sixth-season order, the trade paper reported. Atlantis will live on in a two-hour telefilm to air on SCI FI in 2009.

Universe will premiere as a two-hour movie early next year and will assume a regular hourly slot in the summer. Brad Wright and Robert Cooper, co-creators of Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis, will serve as executive producers and writers on the new series.

The new show will involve more space-based action than either of the predecessor series, the trade paper reported.

Universe introduces a new team of explorers who find an ancient unmanned ship called the Destiny. Unable to return to Earth, the crew must fend for themselves aboard the ship, which has a pre-programmed mission taking them to the far reaches of the universe.

Appearances by former cast members from SG-1 and Atlantis are very possible.

    article

Howe is equally positive about Stargate Atlantis leaping to the movie format. "I think these things lend themselves to a bigger, kind of high-production-value, two hour event, which is great," he said. Howe also recognizes the passion of the show's fan base, which has been flooding his e-mail box since the show's cancellation was announced on Thursday.

    More on SGA Movie

While there is still plenty of work to be done to finish out the fifth and final season of Stargate Atlantis, executive producers Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie are already busy penning the first Atlantis movie that will follow the series when it bows in January (story).

The film doesn't have a title yet, but Mallozzi has nicknamed it "Project Twilight" in these earliest stages of pre-production.

Mallozzi, who also serves as Atlantis's day-to-day showrunner along with Mullie, called the cancellation news "bittersweet." "To be honest, we knew the odds were stacked against us," he told GateWorld. "Still, given the numbers, we did hold up hope for a renewal.

"I'm certainly satisfied with what we've accomplished over the show's five year run."

The Atlantis movie will air later in 2009, and will be followed by more adventures from the lost city of the Ancients -- if the first is a success.

"I can't predict whether an ongoing series of Atlantis-based movies will prove successful," Mallozzi said. "However, if the performance of the two SG-1 movies is anything to go by, the audience is out there."

The film will of course play into the established mythology of Stargate Atlantis, but the story won't have the burden of tying up loose story threads from the television series.

"It will be more [like] Continuum than Ark of Truth in that it will continue the story of Atlantis in a one-off offering," he said. "While the adventure will be stand-alone, the character moments will certainly draw on past experiences and future potential."

And while there is certainly potential for crossovers by SG-1 actors, Mallozzi hopes that the two series of movies remain distinct. "While I like the idea of some crossover, I think SG-1 movies should be SG-1 movies and Atlantis movies Atlantis movies," he said. "Two movies of each a year would be a true best case scenario."

The premise became a little obvious part way through and the reveal was a bit heavy-handed in psycho analysis, but who cares? More Kolya!

Also- Atlantis finale week is ALL Atlantis

It's going to be "all Atlantis, all the time" for the SCI FI Channel, which will bid farewell to one of its longest-running, signature shows on Friday, January 9. The cable network will run all-day marathons every day of the week leading up to the final episode, according to SciFi.com.

The first marathon is scheduled for Friday, January 2 from 8 a.m. through 3 a.m., with the exception of two hours set aside for Sanctuary (10 p.m. and 12 a.m.). This includes the first new episode to follow the holiday break, when "Vegas" is expected to make its U.S. debut at 9 p.m. (8 Central).

Four 11-hour marathons will air the following week, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

On Friday, January 9, a 13-hour Atlantis marathon leads up to the premiere of the final episode of the television series, "Enemy At the Gate," at 9 p.m. (8 Central). Another two episodes will air at 1 a.m. and 2 a.m.

All times are Eastern and Pacific.

The network hasn't announced just what episodes it will be airing in the marathons yet, but with some 75 hours scheduled (excluding repeats of "Vegas" and "Enemy At the Gate"), it is going to make it through most of the 100-episode series. The network may have to skip Season Four due to rights issues, since those 20 episodes are currently airing in the U.S. syndication market.

I must say that I have mixed feeling about this show being cancelled. I am not to terribly mad that it has been, but at the same time I am pissed that another SG is ending.

I have been less and less into the show since SG-1 was cancelled since I thought that Atlantis's best run was the first 3 seasons and we got to see both casts on both shows interacting. Loved that.

Off topic question: Is the guy that plays Todd on Alantis the big caveman guy on Sanctuary?

Yep- the same actor also played the tall Athosian who was a recurring character early on in SGA, as well as the Jack the Ripper teleporter in Sanctuary. Those Sg producers must really love that guy ;)

Really liked this show as well last night!

I had this really weird dream that I was Daniel yet I was myself a part of SG-1 but with the SG-A team memebers and we were getting shut down out of our TV contract. Our base where the SG was was in my parents house in Lake Charles, LA. and we hung out at the main gas station in town bitchin about how America wanted to cut the funds on our off world missions thus ending our TV documentaris.

Weird dream but really cool as well.

Well, the final episode has yet to air in the US (though a bootleg has been floating around the net).

A lot happens between the end of Season 2 and the end of Season 5. Personally, while I liked aspects of it, Season 2 was by far the weakest of the show. 5 is probably the best (though 1 is a close second).

In Season 3 they encountered a race built by the Ancients who were very similar to the Humanform Replicators, but whom the Ancients eventually tried to wipe out. They attempt to destroy Atlantis as a form of retribution against the Ancients. They're defeated but a subsequent action following the reclaiming of Atlantis by surviving Ancients is successful and the Asurans take over the city, but are eventually repelled by the Atlantis team, O'Neill and Woolsey. An intergalactic gate bridge constructed of a chain of gates seeded between the galaxies begins construction, permitting easier travel between the Milky Way and Pegasus gate systes (with a small space station calle Midway in the middle to facilitate the transition from pegasus gates to Milky Way gates). Shep encounters a Wraith (nicknamed Todd) imprisoned by the Genii, whom he teams up with to escape. Dr. Beckett is killed in an explosion. Michael is revealed to be alive and, being exiled by the Wraith, has begun genetic experiments for creating his own army. When it's discovered that the Asurans are building a warfleet, Earth ships make a fist strike against them, wiping out their facilities. The Asurans counter with a gate-based orbital weapon that forces Atlantis to relocate to a different planet and Dr. Weir is seriously injured in the process by the weapon.

In Season 4, Carter takes over command of Atlantis, Dr. Keller replaces Beckett, McKay influences/reprograms the Asurans to start attacking the Wraith- but they do so by attacking human populations so that the Wraith cannot feed anymore. A joint strike force of earth ships, Travelers (a race of humans that lives on ships to avoid cullings by the Wraith) and Todd's hive ships engage the Asurans and trigger a chain reaction that destroys their planet and the Asurans along with it. The Wraith begin falling into civil war between the loss and lack of food supplies and Michael's growing threat. Midway station is destroyed and humans in the Pegasus galaxy start succuming to a plague derived from the Hoffman drug that renders humans immune to Wraith feeding- caused by Michael's experiments Michael also takes a keen interest in Teyla's child, whom he kidnaps. he's also revealed to be in the possession of a clone of Beckett.

Season 5- Woolsey takes over command of Atlantis, Attempts to further the alliance with Todd's wraith by introducing a treatment that would eliminate their need to feed (sparing humans and giving Todd's faction an advantage over his rivals), but these efforts fail- later complicated by the discovery of a group of survivving rogue Asgard who attempt to use an Ancient weapon that targets the hyperdrives of Wraith ships, destroying them when they try to make a jump- but the side effect of causing stargates to explode makes them a threat to Atlantis and other humans. The Atlantis team is put on trial by a new colation of Pegasus human factions for their actions over the past few years. Michael makes a final assault on Atlantis and is finally defeated. The 2nd to last episode of the season was an alternate universe story done in the style of a CSI-type show. Wraith had found Earth in that universe but had been defeated. A surviving Wraith secretly build s adveice to tell the other Wraith where Earth is, but is stopped in time- however the signal he tried to get out was apparently sent to another universe...

...and that's where the series finale will essentially pick up.
