I've never had blood clots but I still wore compression socks on my flight back from Japan. Very helpful. My mom always wears them since she has had clots.

At least that's a small step in the right direction. Before the merger with McDonnell-Douglas, Boeing was run by engineers. After that, the professional bean counters took over and refused to pay for quality.

WOMBAT & Mover strongly approve of the movie Sully. As do I.

Passenger plane just crashed in a suburb of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Video shows a flat spin. It's rather disturbing so I'll put the twitter vid in spoiler tags. All 62 passengers are dead. Fortunately it seems like no one was killed on the ground

It's actually incredible that no one on the ground was killed... But damn that's still an awful crash.

How does a big plane just start spinning like that? And dropping out of the air?

That simply should not happen. I can't imagine any way it would unless the pilot did it on purpose or was mind-bogglingly incompetent. I hope I'm wrong about both of those theories.

Does it matter that it was a turbo prop plane?

Maybe if the propeller blades on one engine shifted to reverse thrust, that might do it. But most turboprops have safety systems that won't let them shift unless the wheels are on the ground.

Many jet engines have thrust reversers that could cause the same effect, but those also have similar safety lock outs.

ETA: I just remembered Howard Hughes crashed his XF-11 because one of its propellers malfunctioned and reversed in midair. That's the most reasonable theory I can come up with at the moment.

Definitely an investigation to keep an eye on since it's such an unusual situation.

I haven't heard anything official, but there are rumors of ice on the wings. That would explain a lot.

Yeah that's probably the most physical damage a plane has suffered from a ground collision in recent memory.

I bet everyone involved in moving those planes will have to pee into cups.
