I only ask because, if things go as I hope they will, I'll be a police officer and I'll, no doubt, wind up seeing things like that.

The fall through the darkness lasted only seconds as Fenix?s legs buckled under his weight as he touched solid ground. He looked up at the giant hole above him and estimated the fall had only been five meters. A light haze of building material billowed downward while the heavier debris that had fallen decorated the floor. Fenix shook himself from splinters and wood chips that had collected in his hair and in his clothing. A cloud of dust and powder flew out from his hair when he shook it.

After shaking as much dust as he could off his clothing, the bounty hunter looked around to get his bearing straight. The Body was nowhere to be seen, even though he had fallen right next to him the whole time. The area of the rundown building Fenix had fallen into appeared to be a subbasement. He assumed from the many wooden vertical supports and almost ancient building materials that the building had been constructed back in the days of the Old Republic, possibly even earlier, back when building materials and technology were less advanced and developed than the present?s. Even the smell of mold and slime hinted at its age. The wooden supports had been constructed in large numbers in order to keep the entire structure upright and stable and Fenix had seen what happened to buildings like this particular one when their supports gave away.

The supports had been arranged in a grid pattern dividing the subbasement into boxes of equal area in order to achieve maximum support. Fenix stepped into one of the grid boxes and found the supports formed straight rows throughout the dark subbasement. Ahead of him, at the far end of the subbasement close to fifty meters away, Fenix could see daylight shining through a rusted, metal, hinged gate with steps leading up to ground level. He started towards it when suddenly his danger sense went off. Without turning to look behind him, Fenix hit the floor, just as the rushing feeling of a heavy object rushed over him and crashed into a support, snapping it in half. Fenix picked himself up and backstepped several paces to see The Body in his sights once more. Even through the darkness, Fenix spotted The Body?s black armor dusted gray in several patches and debris from the fall nestled firmly in cracks and crevices in his armor, evidence of him receiving the same brunt of the fall. Folding his hands into a wrecking ball, The Body raised them over his head before slamming them hard into the ground in front of him. The force of the impact shook the foundation as dust showered down from overhead. Wooden supports creaked and an invisible wave raced forward at Fenix from the small crater at the spot where the Hunter struck. The wave crashed into the supports as it reached Fenix, shattering them in the process. Watching the trail of debris behind the wave that couldn?t be seen, Fenix dove out of the wave several centimeters before the debris cloud had actually reached him. Cartwheeling his body on his right arm alone, he sprung upward of the ground and landed just out of the way of the wave. The wave continued forward on an unfaltering course taking out more poles and crashing with a large blast into the wall. Cracks formed along the wall yet it remained sturdy.

?That was a pretty cute trick up there.? The Body grunted maliciously as he ripped a support out with both hands to swing at his opponent that he never took eyes off of in the process. ?Real funny!?

Fenix performed a mocking bow, angering The Body as a throaty growl rose up from within. The large Hunter brought the wooden beam to his side and swiped sideways, taking out two supports in the process. A groaning sound from overhead began to resonate throughout the subbasement as the bounty hunter narrowly dodged the attack by jumping over it. Fenix grabbed the closest support beam and swung horizontally around it, letting go at the right moment to put him in line for a flying kick into The Body?s face. Before connecting however, The Body brought up a hand in front of his face that completely engulfed his foot as he

He flung forward with all his might and was thrilled to have the clear plastic tube with black fluid running through it firmly in his grip.

I would have tried that move sooner, if at all possible. I knew that would cause some major problems for the Body.

    That isn't a good idea...

The Body?s voice suddenly was heard. ?And now, Mr. Reiner?you die!?

Where's that Dash fella when you need him?

?Like you are?? Dash shot back. He looked ahead at the Hunter who beckoned the smuggler to fight.

It's about time you get in the action.

The Body stepped out of the pile of rubble and charged and Dash. At the same time, Dash rushed forward as well. The two men dove and tackled each other in midair at the same time. With their momentum equal during impact, they simple fell straight down to the ground staring into each other?s faces. They quickly stood up and squared off ready to fight once more. Dash jumped forward, raising his leg in a feint to knee the Hunter. The Body reached down to block the knee while at the same time raising his own fist to swing down upon the smuggler. Dash held his arm horizontally to deflect the blow, then used his free hand to punch up into The Body?s unprotected chest just below the ribcage.

The Body grunted as air rushed out of his lungs as he faltered backward. Dash kept on pressing his advantage, fighting with a ferocity Fenix had never seen in his partner before. A flurry of kicks, punches, pounds, and other blows were sent in The Body?s direction and Fenix watched in amazement as the Hunter retreated step by step after every attack. Fenix sat up, wincing in pain, to watch the ongoing fight. Dash had accomplished a backhand that sent The Body spinning to the ground. He rushed forward to continue his assault when a swift kick halted his advance.

The Body got up and began his attacks. Because Dash had more energy, he was able to block each attack that came his way. He ducked under a sideways punch and sidestepped to clear a flying knee. Dash circled around The Body and kicked just behind the knee on the right leg. The leg snapped backward and the Hunter fell backward as he lost balance in his legs. The Body, with surprising speed, sunk to the ground and used his hands planted firmly to spin his body in a roundhouse kick that brought down Dash. The Body clawed his over to the fallen man and reached for his neck. Dash pulled his hands away and kicked upward into the large man?s stomach, forcing another sound of pain to come out.

A plank of wood suddenly picked itself out of the pile of rubble close by. Dash watched it closely while struggling to keep The Body off him as it swung backward at first, then launched itself forward into the side of the large man?s head, clanking loudly before settling near the ground. The Body rolled off Dash and he spotted his partner limping towards him with the board held loosely in his hands.

?Couldn?t leave you hanging?? Fenix managed to say.

?I could manage.? Was Dash?s reply. The men stepped backward as the Hunter stirred, quickly regaining consciousness. Both Fenix and Dash backed up against the dumpster watching the large man ready himself for another charging attack.

?He doesn?t give up, does he?? asked Dash.

    ?I?m afraid not.?

The Body charged once more. Together, the partners rushed forward, lining themselves up on both sides of The Body. Each slammed one shoulder hard into the Hunter?s stomach as they lowered their heads. The Body?s motion ceased abruptly, knocking him down again. Picking up whatever heavy objects they could find on the ground that littered out from the collapse, the two men began pelting the Hunter. He charged again and again, each time being dodged by a simple sidestep. His attacks began so predictable, Fenix and Dash quickly formulated a plan to finally dispose of the Hunter once and more. Circling around the courtyard, they had managed to back up against the dumpster again. Fenix reached behind him and found the lever that would open the side panel for people to access the interior. The Body kicked himself off the ground and propelled himself forward at the men. At the last second, Fenix ducked away, only after he pulled hard on the lever, opening the side panel. The Body crashed headfirst inside as his limbs banged loudly against the panel edges. A heavy clang and the rustle of garbage signaled the landing of The Body inside and Dash leapt forward to slide the handle upward, shutting the panel. Red light lit up on a panel that suddenly activated itself reading ?full load?. A golden beacon on top of the

The thumbnail sized disk of Mechis III appeared in both the Thyferran Sun?s and Outrider?s viewports as the two ships reverted back to realspace. While in hyperspace, Fenix nursed his injuries and rested from his engagement with The Body. He was back in prime shape once more as the grim, smoky-laden world continued to expand.

?Any readings yet, Dash?? Fenix asked as he lounged in his comfortable padded pilot?s chair.

?The planet?s haze makes it difficult to pick up on any kind of reading but I was able to pick up remains of a decaying ion trail heading towards one of the old, abandoned droid factories. I?m going to assume that since the planet population is less than a hundred, that ion trail came not from regular traffic but from our last friend to meet.?

?Djo?ann?? Fenix murmured. When he first began on the job, Fenix considered going after the attractive female as a potential. One rejection after another strayed him away from pursuing her as she became one of the only females to actually withstand the Fenix Reiner charm. Then he discovered she wasn?t actually human at all. It was only after both Fenix and Dash were tricked by Djo?ann into letting the Peace Brigade know what they knew did they finally figure out she was actually a changling.

?Alright, I say let?s check it out. Can we get through the defense system??

?I?m working on that right now.? Came Dash?s response. ?I?ve already hailed the administrator and he gave us clearance to scope out the abandoned sector as well as coordinates for our incoming vector. He stated they?ve had only one ship arrive in the last three days and that it had all necessary clearance which confirms we are indeed at the right place.?

?Good. Let?s find that ship then. Chances are he or she, or whatever that thing is, is probably waiting for us inside. We?ll land together outside.?

?Affirmative that. See you down below, partner.?

Activating the Sun?s forward lamps to cut through the thick, industrial smog, Fenix guided his ship with ease through the jolty atmosphere. Activating the autopilot to follow the given coordinates, Fenix looked out the viewport at the area around him. The ship continued to fly towards the surface, finally passing through the dark, polluted clouds. The landscape of the old industry sector was black and gray. Long forgotten, abandoned factories were coated with gray ash and black soot. Numerous smokestacks thrusting into the sky spewed black smoke into the air and dull orange lights twinkled within the large facility that looked very active. As they came up to their target destination, Fenix?s face scrunched up in confusion.

    ?Dash??? Fenix asked.

    ?Yes, Fenix??

?I don?t get it. I thought this area was supposed to be abandoned.?

?It is. The admin told me machines and computers run these factories. No human presence is really required to operate them but company mandates require a supervisor. As to why they keep everything?wait, I see something.?

Fenix had spotted it too. What looked like a giant arachnid positioned just outside a large bay door turned out to be yet another Trilon-Aggressor. ?Looks like we?re at the right place.? Fenix commented. ?We?ll land right next to her vessel and she where we go from there.? He added.

Puffs of soot and ash wafted upward as gusts from the two ships stirred them. Equipped with his usual armored vest and jumpsuit, Fenix did a sanity check as he felt his blaster in its holster slung around his hip. He lowered the boarding ramp on his ship and immediately the draft sent the pollution into the main cabin and into his face. The air smelled like burning organic material and small coarse particles pelted his face and eyes. He stepped down and brought an arm in front of his face in an effort to filter everything out from his eyes, nose, and mouth. He coughed as he inhaled after gathering a mouthful of the industrial grime. He looked over next to him and saw his partner going through the same fit. The dirty ground crunched underneath

?What are you?? Fenix demanded, keeping his blaster trained on Djo?ann.

Djo?ann, taken back by the bounty hunter?s question, replied. ?I am just one of the few remaining members of my species in this galaxy. For as long as we?ve existed, we?ve trained and served as bounty hunters, spies, assassins, and mercenaries, both freelance and for government. Our unique ability make us the most valuable, as well as feared, to anyone and our slow aging process allows us to do our work over the ages.?

Fenix continued to stand, unmoving. ?You didn?t answer my question. What are you?? He stressed each word of his question as if making it clear to a young child.

Fenix?s blaster arm followed the Hunter closely as she walked around the small work area as she answered his question. ?Probably the most famous member of my kind was a bounty hunter named Zam Wesell, back in the dying days of the Old Republic.?

?You?re a Clawdite?? Dash spoke up from behind Fenix.

    ?That is correct, Mr. Rendar.?

??but I thought Clawdites had restrictions as far as changing goes. For example, I thought you could only mimic a person?s appearance, but how do you get the rest of their attire??

?Excellent question, Mr. Rendar. The answer to that question lies in the theory of evolution. We came to be like this through development over the years. I was one of the first that had received this extra ?gift?. It allows me to do my work with ease.?

?So we noticed.? Fenix said coldly.

She stopped in her footsteps and turned to Fenix. ?Yes, you?re right. It was only after I had accepted what the Yuuzhan Vong were offering me in return for my services did I fall in league with your friend, Cam Heatley. At the time, I had kept myself hidden, using the female character you?ve all seen before. I later revealed myself to Cam in order to secure a top position in the Peace Brigade. I had become one of his top agents. I gathered information from the most surprising places and I did the dirty work. Imagine being just millimeters away from certain death, Mr. Reiner. That?s how close I had gotten to you. That had been one of the easiest assignments yet. I was somewhat disappointed but thanks to your undying trust in your partner and your big mouth, we are where we are right now.?

?Then let?s get this taken care of, shall we? I?d like to get back to Bimmisaari.? Fenix said.

?I cannot say ?no? to my employers but if it were up to me, I?d let you go. I have nothing against you, I?m just doing my job. You see, Mr. Reiner, you don?t realize that you and I aren?t that much different. I?ve done some extensive research on you and your persona amazes me.?

?Why?s that?? Fenix asked, narrowing his eyes.

Djo?ann eyed the blaster in Fenix?s hand still pointed at her. ?If you?d lower that weapon for a second, I can explain.? The bounty hunter hesitated for a brief second before complying with her request. Then she began.

?You?ve been in this galaxy for close to 39 years now. I?ve been around much longer than that, however both of us have pasts that haunt us and shape us today. We?ve watched loved ones die, which in turn encouraged us to fight. In my case, Palpatine?s rise to power brought along the hunting and destruction of my species. He considered the Clawdites as a potential threat, even though several of them enlisted to do his evil bidding. Those who rejected his New Order were destroyed or ran into hiding to escape persecution. Our homeworld had been bombarded and all records of its existence deleted from libraries and maps, never to be found again. It was because of the Emperor did I finally become what I am today, a premium hunter. I fight not for my lost family but for my entire species. I wanted to make the Clawdite species proud and well known. Such is the case with you, Mr. Reiner.?

Somewhere behind him, Fenix felt Dash stir. He ignored it as he continued to listen.

?Your parents had been Rebel sympathizers. The Empire hunted them down across the galaxy before finally find and killing them o
