Captain Loras grabbed his beard so hard he almost ripped out the hairs. His eyes were focused on the red lights on his panel before him. He cursed himself. What had he tought? The hyperdrive repairing itself?

"K1, get our guests to the pod. Get them there now!" He yelled into the microphone. The poor kids had lost everything but their lives and now they were about to loose those. Because an old fool hand pushed his ship too far.

His fingers quickly deactivated all power in the desperate hope to buy himself another minute. "NOW!" He yelled at his droid.

No matter what he did Loras knew a hyperdrive that was overheating could not be saved. More modern ship could eject their core, but this ancient pile of metal had no such measure.

    "Affirmative." K1 faithfully replied.

Loras saw the temperature go into the deep red area and systems began to fail. He knew why. The core was melting them.

"Eject them right away manually. Control is gone." He said and felt his voice failing. In a final attempt he opened all exhaust ports to let vacuum float the engine room. It would not save them, but probably buy them a minute or two.

"Ejection sequence launched." The droid announced. The countdown appeared on one of the last displays still powered by the emergency batteries.

    10 ... 9 ... 8 ...

Life support went red. Then the display burst.

    7 ... 6 ... 5 ...

Loras saw the energy of the ship fail, batteries were down on 20%.

    4 ... 3 ... 2 ...

The ship began to tremble. The exhaustion ports had spread the heat to the engines which exploded and send a rumbling through the ship.

    1 ... LAUNCH!

He saw the small pod through his window and the display with the countdown died as if it had just held together to show the small victory within the monumental and fatal defeat.

The sensors were now the last system working on the battery he had installed there a month ago. He looked at it and ... a single yellow dot was there. A ship? Another ship? Out here in the void of space millions of parsec away from any planet? Maybe the kids had hope after all ...

Loras felt the rumbling spread, he heard the screaming noise of metal forced out of it's form and then the galaxy ... his very existence ...

The Corellian people have a saying. Desaster always strikes twice.

For the three teenagers who had survived the destruction of the homeplanet this certainly was true.

The fall of Aldera IV had come so unexpected and was so fatal the whole galaxy was shocked by it. The mining colony had suddenly begun detecting earthquakes and before they could even begin to measure the cause of this the sudden realization had hit the colony with brutal clarity. The planet had turned unstable for reasons unknown.

Evacuation had been initiated immediately, but evacuating a colony that had millions of inhabitants and never had considered the need to transport them off planet had not exactly worked well. Chaos had spread as people tried to get hold of anything that could fly. Anarchy spread like wildfire.

Four teenagers had survived this disaster by their parents bribing an old smuggler to take them off planet in his barely flight-ready ancient transport. They had made it off the colony just in time as the structural integrity of the planet began to fail and they watched the very planet they had considered home breaking apart. Millions of voices screamed out in a second and then were silent forever.

That had been their first disaster. The second happened an hour later when the old ship malfunctioned and these four young people were ripped from their mourning for their loss and shoved into an escape pod. Again they had beaten death by seconds as they barely had made it out of the launch pad when they saw the "Derelict Queen" vanish in a bright explosion as the core overheated.

So they ended up floating somewhere in space in a barely maneuverable pod with limited supplies.

    They were lost.

Except they all felt ... something. They were not alone out there ... not at all.

    There was a ... presence.

    The Dark Sun
    A Star Wars Adventure

    ------------

This game is set in roughly 1500 BBY, but really it doesn't matter too much. It is not a story about galactic history.

This game is about four kids who survived the terrible cataclysm of their homeworld Aldera IV and who ended up in an escape pod in the void of space. They do not know where they are, but their only companion, a droid called K1, assures them they are far away from any common hyperspace route or inhabited planet. They are essential lost.

This is where their adventure begins. You play those kids. This will be their fight for survival and an adventure that the galaxy might have forgotten, but that changed it forever nevertheless.

    Name: Kasper

    Age: 15

    Height: 5’ 10”

Appearance: Kasper is physically lean, but in shape. He has pale skin, silver hair and blue eyes.

Short Biography: Kasper was adopted and raised by the nurse that delivered him; a korun woman by the name of Loran. His biological mother and only known parent, passed away when he was born. Loran became a Home Care Specialist to an influential family, which allowed her to afford raising a child on her own, but not always the time to do so, though she did her very best to accomplish both. Eventually, and through consistent effort, she was successful at forming a bond of confidence and trust with her adopted son.

Despite his exceptional grades and evident bright mind, Kasper was not always popular because of his unique appearance and more often than not, found himself in unpleasant situations because of it. To aid him with self-discipline and self control, Loran enrolled him in self-defense courses and several sporting clubs. Notably, Kasper only stayed with the self-defense classes.

On that fateful day, Loran had managed to get some time off to spend with her son. They were on their way to a self-defense demonstration, which Kasper had qualified to participate in. The pair were both nervous and excited, and were awaiting their transport, when the quakes began to happen. Within moments, it was clear that the magnitude of their situation was catastrophic. Chaos ensued.

Thinking quickly, Loran spied a group of families speaking desperately with an old smuggler. She was able to use the name of her employers and a substantial amount of funds, which was intended as Kasper’s inheritance, to secure passage for her son.

She had not saved his life all those years back, only to lose him now. Not like this.

There was no time for tears or sentimental good-byes. Loran was terrified, but managed to stay focused as she kissed her son goodbye and handed him to Captain Loras, and watched him go. Her gaze remained on him for as long as possible, even as he went inside the Derelict Queen, up into space, and what she prayed would be his salvation.

Short Biography: Resus is a boy full of hate. He hated his school and his teachers, his homeplanet, his sporty show-off brother and especially his parents!

Or so you think, until you watch the planet on which you lived break apart and realize they are all dead. Suddenly you understand you loved them. It is just too late to tell them.

Before that fateful day Resus was quite a nerd. Actually history was always more interesting to him then the boring reality he had to live in. Dreaming of adventures usually was much more fulfilling than living them.

Now that he is stuck in the adventure of his lifetime he actually wishes the days back when he had the privilege to read about these things.

    Character Sheet:

    Name: Catherine Belworth (Cat)
    Age: 17
    Height: 5'6"
Appearance: Very slim, Athletic. Very fast on her feet. (See below)

Short Biography: Catherine's family was not rich. But they were not exactly poor either. Catherine (or Cat), had studied hard, trying to get into a good school so that she could help her parents, who had scrapped their funds together, in order to send her someplace where she could get a good career. It was in her classes she found out she had a love for two things. Gymnastics and making stuff with her hands. She particularly liked the 'old skills', of making homemade items. To tech tools, just using whatever was handy She made unique jewelry and other items that she gave to her friends and family.

When the world ended, Cat barely remembered what happened. She knows her parents have gone with her to the docking bay on the far side of the city that they lived in. She was sure her parents were going with her, so she was shocked when suddenly she found herself shoved forward, with some younger kids towards the ship. Catherine turned to protest when her mother shoved something into her hand. It was a necklace she had gifted her parents with years ago. The look on her mother's face nearly made her run back, but her father blocked the way. He simply mouthed a single word. "GO." Cat felt her eyes watering as she followed the kids up the ramp, as the ship shook, and the rumble of the engines began. She swore she could hear people pounding on the sides of the ship, as the ship roared to life. Her parents stood far off, watching as the ship disappeared into the stars...

Short Biography: Teros was the kid ... the Alpha ... leader of his pack. Good looking, popular with the girls, smart ... okay not really smart ... but popular. He was the best player in their school league and the local cheerleader beauty was his girlfriend.

Now he sometimes wondered if she was still alive and he fights tears when he realizes ... probably not. They are all dead. Mom. Dad. His friends. His team. His girl.

All except his brother. The person on the world he equally loves and hates, admires and despises. They always had difficulties being so very different and divided by 5 years in age. Resus is still there. Resus is alive. He is with him. Actually it was Resus and his smart thinking that saved them by getting them on board of the ship. Now his little brother is his responsibility. He is all there is left of his family, life and home ...

Episode 1: The Reign of Steel

    Somewhere far away

"Planets don't destabilize like this. Every scientist we spoke to has confirmed that. Something is very wrong here." The elder man in brown robes turned to the Devaronian in the blue uniform of the Republic Navy. His name was Captain Tossel and he simply nodded to answer the question.

"I know. We have initiated a full blown investigation, but so far we got incredibly little to work with." He elaborated and folded his hands behind his back.

"Did the survivors give any insight?" The Elder asked.

"That is why I am here, Master. None of them have shown up." He raised his brows. "We have our eyes on every planet within jump-distance. Not one had a single ship from Aldera IV incoming." He sighed. "Also thirty-two are confirmed to have left the planet, all full of refugees."

The Elder turned to the officer and his eyes became slits as if he was concentrating. Then he nodded. He simply nodded. He did not say a word.

Finally as the silence became uncomfortable he simply said one word.

"Understood." That was all he said or would say.

Tossel had the strong feeling the Elder had expected this. He knew more than he was sharing.

Escape Pod, Somewhere in the middle of nowhere

People easily forgot how cold it was in space. Spaceships had reactors and often were overheated. An escape pod was not meant to be comfortable though. An escape pod was meant to keep it's inhabitants alive on the limited resources available for as long as possible. The batteries therefore produced the amount of heat that was needed for those inside not to freeze to death.

It was still freezing cold though.

Four young people had just found out how cold. K1, a standard utility droid that had saved them all, was handing out blankets, while giving them an update.

"Dear Survivors, I am glad you are with me. Even droids get scared alone in space and especially out here where we have no chance to be found I appreciate your company for the next few days until you probably pass and I will be left inside this escape pod with your slowly decomposing bodies." He looked around and seemed not aware of how inappropriate his comments were. "This would be in .... about four days. We have enough water for three days if we ration effectively and equally and it takes you about a day under these circumstances to get catatonic. We have also only food for three days for four passengers, but do not worry about that. Dehydration will kill you long before you starve to death." He looked at the four young humans who had escaped death twice in the last 24 hours. "Except one of you decided to kill the others, that would prolong his rations considerably and make survival much more likely. Especially if he eats the bodies, which would probably give him up to ten days extra."

He was a droid and could not smile, but one could almost see an polite indifferent smile on his face as he announced these facts. "Yet you should know that our chances of survival are far below one percent, as we are all alone far away from any route spacers use and without a hyperdrive absolutely unable to reach the next inhabited planet."

All four were probably not sure about the last words. They did all feel the strange certainty they were not exactly alone out here. Quite the contrary.

Cat, Kasper and the brothers Resus and Teros all felt more watched than alone out here.

    Resus Kron
    In the middle of nowhere

It had been too much. It had already been too much loosing the planet he hated and called also home. Mum. Dad. All the kids he hated in school. All gone. Gone. He missed them so badly. Never seeing them again was so unbearable.

Then the ship broke down. Hyperdrive failure he guessed. They had escaped again. The four survivors. Surviving again.

Now the droid suggested murder and cannibalism and he seriously hoped if it came to that he would be the one eaten. He felt that would at least be the one who had it behind himself.

He looked at his big brother and knew he was crying. He hated him to see him like that. Like a little boy. "Don't look at me like that." He just said.

The droid also said they were lost out here. They were almost certainly dead.

But somehow Resus believed it would probably not come to that. No. They were probably in the midst of nowhere, but he was almost certain they were far from being alone.

Wiping his tears from his eyes he crawled to the next window and looked out through the tiny opening.

"There ... is something. Out there ... there is something." He whispered more to himself than the others. He turned around to look at the rest of them. All older than him. They were all stronger. Physically better suited for this. He felt like a little boy. To avoid the feeling getting even stronger her turned to the window again and waited for the cold and deadly space to reveal it's secret.

    In the middle of nowhere

He couldn’t stop shaking. And it wasn’t just from the cold. He didn’t try to bite-down so his teeth would stop gnashing against each other; he did nothing about his tears. Never had he felt anything like this, so completely overwhelming. Grief that suffocated his very soul.

Absently, he listen to the droid who spoke about imminent death and feeding on corpses. Revolting. So put-off was he, that he'd almost missed taking the offered blanket. Right now, all he could think about was his Mum.

‘Be strong. I shall be with you, always.’

He'd heard her speak these words as the ship lifted-off, as clearly as if she’d been in the cabin standing next to him. He felt her say good-bye. Moments later, he heard the screams of millions, he felt their dispair and then -nothing. Everything and everyone was gone. The planet, the colony. His Mum. Nothing made sense. Why had any of it happened?

    There were no answers.

He heard sobbing around him, then someone said something.

Kasper rocked back and forth, crying to himself, seemingly inconsolable, when movement caught his attention. He simply followed the motion because that’s what he would have done, even without thinking. Another boy, a survivor, moved towards a porthole and looked out into the vast emptiness of space. Kasper could not see his face as he was facing away, neither could he hear what the boy muttered. He simply saw the younger boy’s breath fogging the glass.

Holding the blanket closer to himself, Kasper absently wiped away his own tears, taking a look at the other survivors as he did so. Another boy. He looked bigger, and was probably older than both himself and the one by the window. Then his heart skipped a beat and he gasped aloud, when he saw the girl.

    For just a split second…..

His mouth opened to utter a word. He froze-up, then shut-it quickly.

It wasn’t her. Just a cruel trick of the lighting.

A discomfiting feeling passed over him just then. It felt, it felt like they were being watched. How was that even possible? There was no mistaking the distinct sensation, but they were inside an escape pod, floating in the middle of nowhere.

The boy by the porthole turned around suddenly, a knowing look in his eyes.

    “You feel th…..”

Before Kasper could finish, the boy turned back to his viewing.

    *sigh*

    Four days the droid said.

How were they going to make it for the next 24 hours inside this icy rust-bucket, much less survive for four days?

Kasper let out a long sigh, then brought his knees closer to his chest as he sat. He tried not to think on anything. It worked. For about 15 seconds.

No. He couldn’t help himself, even as he took a furtive look at the girl.

    Catherine Belworth (Cat)
Somewhere in the middle of nowhere

Cat was so lost in thought, she didnt even notice how hard her teeth were chattering, until the droid handed her a blanket. She nodded, as she took the blanket, quickly wrapping it around herself, as she looked at the others with her. As she looked at the others, she heard the droids rather crude comments. She frowned darkly, especially when he talked about rotting bodies, and lack of food.

'"What kind of droid are you anyway?" Cat asked, as she shook her head, the distain heavy in her voice. It didnt make sense. Not near any shipping lanes? They were a mining colony, for cark's sake! And that weird sensation. Like you get when someone is staring at you when you're not looking. Cat looked around. One kid was sitting near an open port window, looking out. She tilted her head. "See anything out there?" she whispered softly. Another boy was rocking away, tears rolling down his face, but he was silent. Another boy looked uncomfortable.

There was too much in her head to think right. She suddenly wished she had paid a bit more attention in class. Something the droid said, kind of rolled around in her skull. It didnt make sense. She glared back at the droid.

"You said we cant reach the next inhabited planet. Are there any planets we can land on at all?" she asked it. She curled up, as she waited to hear the weird droids response. Cat had no wish to die in space. Not after all the other things that had just happened to them all. Her parents ... Cat swallowed hard, as she pushed that thought away. Not now. She bit her lip hard, as she drew the blanket around her even tighter.

    Escape Pod

Teros saw his brothers tears and he understood them. The loss was so complete it undeniably left nothing but sadness.

Yet, he was the oldest of the assembled and among them he felt responsible. He just did not know what to do. Maybe take care of the droid first.

"Shut up. You are scaring us. Who the hell programmed your social skills, hm?" He stood up, as good as he could and tried to show a minimum of confidence and optimism. "Nobody will eat anybody. We will be getting out of this. Together we will pull through this. We survived so far. We will survive this situation." He looked around wondering if there was actually any way to control the flight trajectory of the pod. "Anybody knows how to control this thing?" He turned to his little brother again who was usually such a source of knowledge, but the crying little boy was looking out of the window.

"Cat, is it? Kasper?" He would need to rely on the more grown-ups he knew. "You got any idea?"

Oh of course Teros was trying to take leadership. He wondered if he was simply to dumb to understand the gravity of their situation. He turned around and hissed out air, shaking his head.

"Where do you wanna fly? Set course on the next inhabited system which is probably seventy years away and ration our water a little more effectively?" He was angry and even in his anger he understood he wasn't really angry with his brother. He was angry with the whole universe.

"It is a utility droid. Basic functionality. Surprising it can talk. He probably got no social programming." He pointed at K1. "Pretty much a useless piece of chunk in our situation." He said this more to Cat than to his brother who had asked a similar question.

    Escape pod to Nowhere

Kasper was surprised that the older boy knew their names. Probably picked it up when they were boarding the ship and their distraught parents were saying their final good-byes. He had been to distraught himself to have payed any attention, and had only been focused on his Mum. As it were, he didn’t know anyone’s name, except what the boy had just revealed.

The girl. Her name was Cat.

Still, it was good to hear the older boy rebuke the droid for his lack of bedside manners. The older boy’s voice seemed steady -and that was heartening. It was also good to know that there would be no cannibalism onboard.

However, before he could answer the question, a hissing sound made him turn his head. For a brief second he thought it was some sort of mechanical malfunction and his heart skipped a beat, but it was only the younger boy, glaring at the older one. He then went into an angry tirade.

Kasper’s blue eyes grew wide in surprise at the unexpected outburst, then slowly began to narrow in annoyance as he listened. He let the boy finish. He could understand that he was angry and frightened, but those emotions were not going to help their situation.

“Alright, alright! Let’s not fight.” he said raising his voice. “No Fighting!” he yelled, letting his annoyance flow out of him. Slowly, he stood up, the blanket still wrapped around him and covering his head like a cowl. He gave the older boy a grateful nod, and a wan smile to the youngest.

“Maybe the droid does know something. He looks like he’s been around for sometime, and who knows, he’s probably had a few upgrades…except….uhm, manners.”

Kasper walked over to the droid, being careful not to step on anyone or anything he was not supposed to. Inwardly, he was trying to think of ways to calm the young one, but nothing came to mind. His Mum would know what to do in such a situation, but she wasn't here. Kasper winced involuntarily, as he tried hard not to focus on that particular fact.

“So, are there any planets that we could get to?” He said as he got close. It didn’t matter if they were not inhabited. Any planet would be better than being trapped in dead space. Cat had the right idea. “And where exactly are the controls?” he asked the droid in a calm voice, though he braced himself for what could be a crude response. One that might trigger some unpleasantness from the others.

And yet still, he felt like they were all being watched.

Yeah, he’d have to mention that, but maybe when everyone was a bit more calm.

K1 turned to Kasper and nodded in what was probably appreciation for defending his upgrade status.

"I am afraid the whiny boy is right, no planet is even remotely in our reach. You will all be dead before we even get near the next colony. That would be Efanaun. Anyway, the controls of the escape pod are behind the panel the young lady is sitting on. I would like to point out that any maneuver costs battery power."

He pointed to the panel and then looked from one of the kids to the next.

If Resus was risking another look out of the window he would recognize a lot of more little lights. This were no stars. It was a ship powering up. A rather large ship that had been hiding out here and now began to wake up like a monster disturbed by the presence of their tiny escape pod.

Somewhere in the middle of nowhere

Well, not surprisingly, tensions began to grow rapidly. One kid kept staring at her.
The two others, they were brothers? They kinda looked similar. The certainly sounded like brothers. The brother not turned towards the window looked at her. "Cat, is it? Kasper?" He paused, then continued. "You got any idea?" Cat gave a smirk. He probably picked out her name from the crowd he hung out with. With Cat belonging to the gymnastic team, she knew of many of the more popular kids. He looked familiar, but she didn't know his name. And the kid who kept staring at her. Kasper? Cat bit her lip, as she gave his question thought. Then the kid who had been quiet suddenly spoke out.

"It is a utility droid. Basic functionality. Surprising it can talk. He probably got no social programming." He pointed at K1. "Pretty much a useless piece of chunk in our situation." Cat nodded in agreement. Kasper spoke out, asking everyone not to fight. Cat wrapped herself tighter in her blanket. Then the droid, spoke up again.

Well, that was just carking great. Too far away from anything. So no use trying to pilot anyplace, until they had a plan. Cat sat down, with a dejected sigh.

"Well, hopefully, this bucket is transmitting something." Cat looked over at the droid. "Do you have a map to show where we are? Maybe we can figure something out..."

Cat tried her best to keep upbeat, while she tried to think of anything useful.

    Teros Kron
    Escape Pod

Teros sighed at the bad news of no planet within their reach. The fatalistic honesty of the droid made it kinda hard to keep up morale.

"An emergency signal. This pod must have some way to let people know we are in distress, right?" He still relied on the droid for answers. He had next to no idea about spaceships and none about escape pods. "And Resus, you know the sector inside out. Had always the best mark in astronomy! Is there anything we can reach? A depot or an abandoned space mine?"

He gave his little brother a stern look to signal him not to sabotage this plan with another cooky comment. Resus was smart and yet his young age made him so frustrating useless in such a moment. Teros wished he would use his smartness to help instead of satisfying his need to oppose his bigger brother. He knew Resus was smarter than him. Why did he have to proof it anymore? Everybody knew.

    In the middle of nowhere

They seemed to still think they would be saved by some miracle. The droid called him whiny kid and that was enough to make him turn back to the window.

Teros asked about the map. "Nothing. This isn't exactly a populated area of space. Some ion mines but they are almost as far away as the next planet ..." He was saying this with a deep sigh. Great, his brother would use his education now to abuse him as a living map. Because he had been having only eyes for the girls when someone explained him the basic outline of fraking sector he lived in! "There is nothing out here."

He looked out at the stars and the far distant nebula. It looked wonderful. Illuminated gas in the emptiness of space and yet so beautiful.

Then another light appeared. Another one. Dozens. Hundreds!

"Guys? Guys there is a ship out there! A damned massive big ship! Droid, can we signal it in any way? Quick! It might go to hyperspace!"

He turned to the others and then back to the ship. He was surprised how he saw the chance to be saved and yet felt ... he had a very bad feeling about the ship.

Somewhere in the middle of nowhere

One moment they were all doomed to meet certain death, again, with nowhere to go and no hope of rescue. Then suddenly, a ship seemed to appear from the darkness of space itself.

It was almost like a miracle.

Kasper felt a surge of excitement course through him after the younger boy’s startling discovery. So much so, that he forgot all about how cold he was and how hungry he was getting.

“Guys? Guys there is a ship out there! A damned massive big ship! Droid, can we signal it in any way? Quick! It might go to hyperspace!" The youngster exclaimed.

It was almost too good to be true, but there was no time to be stunned in amazement. The younger boy was right. They had to act quickly. Their one chance for survival might disappear in a blink of an eye.

“Uhm, Droid? What should I call you anyway? Where did you say were those controls….”

Kasper turned and once he saw Cat, he remembered.

    “Oh, that’s right.”

Taking-in a sharp breath and thinking only of the ship and the needs of the moment, he took a few steps towards the girl, though he paused for a second to look over his shoulder and speak.

    “Hey, uhm…”

Yeah. He was gonna have to ask for names. “….keep looking out the window and let us know if it moves, ok?”

Once he reached the girl, he really tried hard to sound and act casual and not stare with his big blue eyes, which suddenly seemed a lot harder to do than ever.

“Hey, uhm, Cat? Sorry, but the droid said the controls are inside a panel behind you.”

At that, Kasper did his best to glance over behind her in a convincing manner, as a thought swirled through his mind.

He also said it takes power from the batteries to maneuver, but -we need to get off this dang pod.

A though he kept to himself.

“Wanna try steering this thing towards that ship while the others try a signal?”

Kasper offered a sheepish smile, hoping she was willing to cooperate. That ship might have enough fuel and power to get them to Efanaun, wherever that was. According to the droid, there was a colony there. Kasper made a mental note to ask the younger boy about it since he seemed very smart and informed. Come to think of it, taking the droid might also be a good idea.

At least he thought so at the moment.

    Catherine Belworth (Cat)
Somewhere in the middle of nowhere, in an escape pod

As Cat sat, trying to think of anything that might be helpful, the kid who was curled up near the windows started shouting.

"Guys? Guys there is a ship out there! A damned massive big ship! Droid, can we signal it in any way? Quick! It might go to hyperspace!" He turned to the others and then back to the ship.

Cat leaned over to see if she could see this mysterious ship that just suddenly appeared out of nowhere. A voice near her startled her, as she looked up to see the kid who had been staring at her earlier.

“Hey, uhm, Cat? Sorry, but the droid said the controls are inside a panel behind you.” The kid glanced behind her. Cat stood up and slid over.

"Yes, the controls are over there, but what are you going to do? Shouldn't we let the droid signal the ship." Cat shrugged her shoulders. "Unless you know what you're doing, of course." Cat looked out the window. "I find it, odd, that a ship would suddenly appear so close to us, without the droid or the ship's sensors noticing. But at this point, we need it, whether we like it or not." Cat frowned but stayed silent as she pulled the blanket tighter around her. Not because she was cold.

    No, this was something else.

Escape Pod, Somewhere in the middle of nowhere

K1 stepped over to a small panel near the exit. "My name is Kay One." He answered the now almost forgotten question addressed at him by Kasper.

"Send short range emergency signal now. Correct my analysis. Rescue chances are up to 60%." He answered.

The controls were incredibly simple. Four buttons for the primitive four maneuver thrusters. This was not a ship, but a simple escape pod. Next to them was a small display that showed a single yellow dot.

"Did I forget to mention the sensors? My bad." K-1 said and could he have shrugged that would probably have been the gesture.

"May I remark that the ship is no design I have in my databank? I actually have over six million different designs and their basic repair specs in my databank."

Resus was seeing the ship slowly turn towards their direction. It was easily 300 meters in length. On the lower side there were doors now opening. A hangar with a blue energy shield that seperated the atmosphere from space appeared as the large ship began to float silently towards them.

Escape Pod, Somewhere in the middle of nowhere

The sigh of relief he let out was quite loud, so it could not be missed.

“Thank you K-1…” He intoned with a smile. “My name is Kasper."

Well, a 60% chance of survival was far better than what they had before the ship appeared. The silver haired boy came over to the controls and regarded them intently for a moment. They certainly looked simple enough.

“Six million designs, eh?” He said, eyebrows rising slightly as evidence that he was impressed. “If you haven’t seen a design like that, maybe the ship is kinda ancient?” Kasper inquired of the droid. “Well, at least I hope it’s suited to humanoid life-forms.”

With that, Kasper began to operate the buttons.

“Hey, umm….guide me if you can, I’m gonna try to get us closer. Tell me if you can see a docking port or anything.”

The words the droid spoke earlier rang inside his mind. He could ill-afford to squander energy by correcting unnecessary errors. The young boy should be able to be his eyes. Thankfully, the sensors helped as well, He could see the yellow dot clearly now. Wait, was the ship moving towards them, or were they moving towards it?

“Is there someone aboard that ship?” He exclaimed aloud to no one in particular as he made a course correction to match vectors.

A sudden chill ran down Kasper’s spine. He bit down, allowing the passing sensation of dread to flow out of him. This was no time to let irrational fear get the best of him.

“Stay focused.” He muttered to himself.

Sixty percent, sixty percent, sixty percent…

Kasper repeated their chances of survival in his mind like a mantra, even as he noticed the shrinking distance between the ship and the Escape pod, as shown by the sensors. With a look of frosty determination, he hoped to guide the pod safely towards the unidentified ship and a chance at survival.

In a pod, Somewhere in the middle of nowhere

Cat had scrunched down, to look out the window, as the droid and the kid, who introduced himself to K1 as Kasper, began to work on the controls. Hearing the ship was of a design K1 had never seen before, did not help.

Cat's watched as the huge ship slowly turned in their direction. 'Baka, that thing is huge.' she thought to herself. She noticed doors slowly opening now, with a large blue shield showing, like the maw of a large creature swinging towards them. The fact that it now seemed to be closing in on them, did not make the mental image she had feel any better.

"I just hope the natives are friendly," she said softly as their small craft narrowed the distance between them. Not like they had a choice to begin with. But even if they were not the friendliest of beings, it beat slowing suffocating in space in an escape pod, with an annoying droid. Cat turned back and looked at Kasper. "Well, its suited for some life form, or they wouldnt need that screen. So that is a good sign," she stated, trying to sound upbeat.

How come she didnt feel that way? She then looked over at the droid. "Hey K1. Can the sensors tell you anything else?" she asked. She didn't know why she asked. She just felt like she needed to say something, to keep her mind from going into places she didnt want it going.

    In the middle of nowhere

"They are coming for us." He gasped and turned to the others with a thin lipped smile. They all looked much like he felt. Slightly relieved and the same time ... concerned.

"Well, that you don't recognize it just shows how useless you are. And no, you seem to have forgot to mention the damned SENSORS!" Resus was really more afraid than angry, but he wanted to get back at this piece of metal chunk for calling him a whiny kid.

    Teros Kron
    Escape Pod

Teros raised his hand to calm his brother. Then he stepped over to Kasper and pointed up.

"Cat is right. The hangar must have atmosphere! Maybe a steep dive right i to it?" They needed to get in there and they would be saved from certain death. No matter how right they were ... the ship being out here was an unlikely coincidence. It was more than unlikely. Except ...

"K1, you are a repair droid, right? How can a hyperdrive fail? Any way a ship can do that to another?"

He just hoped the damned droid would say 'No'.

But he gave a concerned look to Cat and Kasper hoping they did not get his concern right away.

"They are coming for us." the younger kid Resus exclaimed as he gasped and turned to look over at the others with a grin. Interesting choice of words. Cat did not find any comfort from the words but she smiled anyway, trying to look upbeat.

Then his brother Teros raised his hand and mentioned something about diving right into the opening. He then asked the droid, "K1, you are a repair droid, right? How can a hyperdrive fail? Any way a ship can do that to another?"

Cat made a slight grimace but kept silent. The ship was old, and probably not in the best of shape. Her thought was more about what happened to their home. The frightening rate the planet had disintegrated was not normal. She then suddenly wondered if there were other ships out there. There had to be. Cat bit her lip, trying hard not to start crying again. That was for later. Now, they had to worry about their would-be saviors and hoped that they had no other agenda. Cat moved away from the window and took a seat. Another thought hit Cat. She turned and looked at the droid.

"Hey K1. Any weapons or tools in this pod?" she asked him. Never hurt to ask.

Escape pod, Somewhere in the middle of nowhere

His blue eyes were on the yellow dot. It was getting closer and closer, but he didn’t feel in control.

Kasper half listened to what the others were saying as his basic classes in flight dynamics came flooding back at him all at once. Pitch, Roll, Yaw, Attitude, Acceleration, Deceleration, Mass, Inertia, Boost.

“Wait, what…! A steep dive? That can’t be right, what if we crash?”

It was all suddenly getting to be a bit much.

Kasper didn’t notice that his heart rate was increasing and his breathing was becoming sharper. If both ships were moving towards each other, one of them needed to slow down, or at least that was his thinking.

“Thrusters. I need to reduce our thrust!”

The silver haired boy looked carefully at the controls again as he fought back his growing nervousness. Thankfully ,the controls were simple and clearly labeled. Juking back on the acceleration lever, Kasper hoped he was doing the right thing.

This was nothing like playing Star Citizen on his account back home. In the holo-game, he’d finally managed to purchase his own exploratory scout ship after months of working alongside a salvage crew for a standard wage. The ship was nothing fancy, a stock model really, and he still owed several kilo-credits before he could have it fully paid-off. Though the controls were very realistic, even if he made a mistake, he knew his life was never in any real danger.

Things were different now. This wasn’t a holo-game, and it wasn’t just his life on the line if he made a mistake.

This time, he had to get it right the first time.

Escape Pod, Somewhere in the middle of nowhere

"My programming is indeed in need of a major update my former Master could not afford. But my databank is quite up-to-date I assure you." He proudly answered Resus accusation.

K1 finally turned his head to Teros.

"No. Not while it is in hyperspace." He answered. "But the ships hyperdrive was old and fragile. So if a ship had used a gravity pulse to imitate a stellar object nearby it could have caused an emergency drop out." K1 turned to the window. "Which would have probably been too much for our ancient hyperdrive."

K-1 turned from one kid to another. "There is a blaster pistol in the emergency landing kit." He added as if he was making a random comment. He almost seemed to appreciate Cat's question.

The large ship was now right above the escape pod and Kasper had finally figured out the controls and managed to send on burst of the thrusters out to make the pod float upwards into the hangar.

K-1 meanwhile followed Cat's request and configured the passive sensors. "The capabilities are limited, but the sensors show lifesigns. They are mostly in one area of the shipment seems. The center." He proclaimed.

Kasper managed to slow down the pod just in time to not crash into the ceiling of the hangar. Actually he made the pod float in a perfect angle through the energy field. They slowly drifted into the belly of this particular beast and K-1 looked at the four survivors. "We are saved!" He proclaimed almost proudly.

The hangar was dark, huge and in it they saw the shadowy outlines of several other ships. Then gravity suddenly returned and the pod crashed to the ground, throwing the inhabitants around inside. It was a miracle nobody got seriously hurt. Teros hit the metal deck hard though and immediately lost his consciousness.
