    Chapter 7

High Priest Jakan strode down the corridor leading to Supreme Overlord Shimrra's court with two warriors escorting him. He had dreaded coming before Shimrra since his return from the arena two days ago. Having two full days to consider the punishment Shimrra would issue for the failure at the ceremony had only increased his trepidation. The ceremony was suppose to have crushed the shamed one's heresy; what had happened instead was a catastrophe.

The Jeedai, Anakin Solo, had fooled them and over come his shaping in front of the heretics. The result was a shamed one's uprising and the deaths of hundreds of warriors on the sacred arena floor.

What Jakan had witnessed in the arena had left him questioning his faith-- the Jeedai had been fully shaped by Shimrra's secret shaper, Nen Yim, and Shimrra claimed that the gods had conference him in the matter. Could the gods have been so wrong?

Inside the arena, the human from domain Solo killed dozens of warriors with his light blade; but what was most troubling was when he forced the massive ceremonial statues of Yun-Yammka to topple onto his attackers, without even touching them. It was as if Yun-Yammka himself was protecting the Jeedai.

Through the battle he had somehow protected the aliens that were to be sacrificed in the ceremony and escaped alive. Shimrra had hoped that Solo would execute the sacrifices and convert the heretics who witnessed his following of the Yuuzhan Vong and the True Way. The plan had failed miserably.

Though Jakan had little to do with the planning, he knew Shimrra would hold him responsible for the disaster, especially since he returned from the arena alive; but it wasn't his fault, it was Nen Yim's fault, maybe Commander Hul Choka's. Perhaps it was even Shimrra's... Jakan shuddered at the idea of being put in the Yargh'un pit; a fate reserved fro the lowest criminals like treason and heresy.

He wondered who would take his place as High Priest... Harrar, perhaps? It didn't matter; he would embrace his death and honor Yun-Yuuzhan.

He entered the court and the warriors shut the creaky doors behind him. Jakan tried to keep an even pace as he approached the Supreme Overlord and the others in the Courtroom, but he noticeably slowed, instinctively prolonging his life, no doubt.

Glancing around the room, Jakan was slightly relieved to see the leaders of the other castes, but no other priests. If Shimrra was going to kill him, he didn't have his replacement present.

Jakan walked to his place in the court and bowed deeply.

"You request my presence, Dread One?" Jakan asked.

"Look my Lord! High Priest Jakan has graced us with his holy presence," interrupted Shimrra's jester, Onimi. Jakan loathed the shamed one and found himself wishing Shimrra would silence him.

"High Priest Jakan, who fails so much,

    Fumbles every task on touch,

His hands be bound and throat be slit,

Then throw him in the Yargh'un pit."

Jakan cringed at the end of the Jester's rhyme, which was punctuated by an insane cackle. It was as if he had read his mind and knew his fears...

"Silence, Onimi," Shimrra ordered in his heavy voice. "Rise, Jakan."

Jakan looked into the maa'it implants that replaced Shimrra's eyes as they cycled through brilliant yellows, purples, and reds. Nothing was said for many moments as the glowing eyes penetrated Jakan's mind. A large pressure began to build in his head while a mad giggle could be heard from Onimi.

"Take your place, Priest," Shimrra said, gesturing to a spot next to the other caste leaders. He scurried off to stand in between High Perfect Drathul and Warmaster, Nas Choka. Master Shaper, Yal Phaath stood on the opposite side of the intendant's High Perfect. Jakan turned his attention back to Shimrra who was seated in his bulbous throne with Onimi hunched down near his feet.

"Great tragedy has befallen the Yuuzhan Vong," Shimrra's voice boomed. "The shamed one's heresy has grown to encompass acts of violent rebellion. Tell us of Ombi'taer, Warmaster."

Nas Choka bowed and complied with the Supreme Overlord's orders.

"It appears the infidels have destroyed our coralskipper fields and released our captives in the system, Dread One. I regret to confirm the shamed ones's involvement in the defeat. Our plans will be set back slightly, but I'm confident the other systems like Belkadan will yield enough fighters."

Jakan was not familiar with Ombi'taer or what the Yuuzhan Vong were doing in the system. Growing coralskippers seemed odd to him, because he was certain the Yuuzhan Vong were short on pilots.

"Jakan, you have news to deliver as well," Shimrra stated.

"Yes, Supreme One," Jakan admitted. "The Jeedai has betrayed us and inspired the shamed ones in the arena to revolt. Many warriors were killed, dishonorably."

Jakan managed to finish his brief statement with as little shivering as possible.

The three other caste leaders showed no surprise at the mention of the Jeedai. Shimrra had went to great lengths to keep the shaping of Anakin Solo secret, until the Jeedai proved his loyalty, but there was little chance of keeping it secret with so many warriors being slaughtered.

Jakan noticed a scowl on the Warmaster's face and remembered that it had been his brother, Hul Choka, who had been assigned the task of watching the Jeedai while he was in the care of the warriors. Hul Choka had been killed in the arena by shamed ones; Jakan had seen it. His death would disgrace Domain Choka.

"And how did you managed to survive Jakan?" Onimi asked in his high-pitched squeak. "Devine intervention?"

    "I...I was..."Jakan stammered.

"Silence Jakan," Shimrra commanded. "You are no warrior; if three hundred of our strongest were slain, what could you possibly have done? Someone had to return to give us an account of the events in the arena."

There had been other priests and intendants that had survived to spread the word of the shames one's uprising, which is why everyone on Yuuzhan'tar already knew, but Jakan didn't feel like arguing that with the Supreme Overlord.

"The shamed ones must be dealt with and the Jeedai recaptured," Shimrra continued.

Jakan was thankful that Shimrra had not dwelled on his cowardice.

"Master Shaper; have you been able to shape the voxyn?" Shimrra asked.

The Voxyn were beasts shaped by Yal Phaath two years prior that hunted the infidel Jeedai. They were a combination of vornskrs, from the infidels’ galaxy, and the Yuuzhan Vong beasts known as taznii holoki.

"No, My Lord, and I'm afraid we have no taznii holoki left to shape with. The originals are now extinct and the clones can not be shaped with the infidels’ vornskrs," Yal Phaath admitted.

The old shaper was fragile and his skin looked petrified.

Like many of the Yuuzhan Vong creatures that had once graced the original Yuuzhan'tar, the taznii holoki had been dangerously close to extinction for as long as Jakan could remember. They had lost the originals during the failed voxyn project.

    Shimrra's face betrayed no emotion.

"We still do not know how the Jeedai knew that the taznii holoki were on the verge of extinction when they killed the voxyn queen, but it seems unlikely that they would have taken such a foolish chance at Myrkr without that knowledge," the shaper said.

"And what of our current plight, Shaper?" Shimrra asked. "How will you find the Jeedai?"

"It is possible to modify the behavior of the vornskrs to help track the Jeedai, but they do not cooperate with our handlers. Some infidels believe that bobbing their tails reduces their aggression... We could also try shaping their minds."

Yal Phaath seemed to be lost for a moment. "They will not be efficient hunters as the voxyn were, and will certainly be no threat to the Jeedai alone, but they might be able to lead our warriors to him."

"Make it so, Shaper," Shimrra spoke with disgust.

"And what of the shamed ones?" Onimi asked. "How will we correct Jakan's failure?"

Jakan bristled at the implication that he was responsible for the fiasco.

"What do you suggest, Jakan? You have seen the shamed ones heresy first hand now, is there any hope of saving them?"

Jakan thought for a moment. "They are very dedicated, Supreme One; I fear the Jeedai may have pushed them to the point-of-no-return with his tricks."

"Many intendants are also involved with the heresy now, Master," Onimi said, antagonizing High Perfect Drathul. "What does he have to say fro himself?"

"Intendant involvement, no matter how minute, is being investigated vigorously, Dread One," Drathul said.

Shimrra's maa'it implants gleamed with new intensity.

"Jakan, Drathul: the time for conversion is nearing a close. I am declaring war on the heretics."

Jakan tried to mask his shock at the startling news, but feared Shimrra picked up on it, as he seemed to read Jakan's thoughts and emotions whenever the HIgh Priest was in Shimrra's presence.

"Round up the shamed ones, beginning with suspected heretics," Shimrra announced. "Those who will not reveal the location of Yu'shaa and the Jeedai will be executed. Those that have information are to be brought before me."

The pressure in Jakan's head intensified and then slackened as Shimrra turned his attention to Nas Choka.

"Warmaster, Yal Phaath will hand over his vornskrs and you will lead the hunt for the Jeedai. The setback with Ombi'taer will not slow our onslaught, so you have a limited window to operate within--do not fail."

"You are excused now," the Supreme Overlord finished and the caste leaders headed for the exit.

"Jakan, I desire a word with you in private."

The words stopped the High Priest in his tracks as a chill ran up his spine and into his heart. He turned around and walked back to his place to face Shimrra.

    "Yes, My Lord?"

The extreme grip on Jakan's skull increased again and his vision blurred until all he could see was the bright rainbow of Shimrra's maa'it implants.

"Cowardice is dishonorable in all Yuuzhan Vong, Jakan," Shimrra boomed. "Are you a coward, Jakan?

    The pressure increased.

    "No."

The pain eased slightly. "Do you have questions, Jakan? You witnessed the Jeedai's tricks and it has caused doubts in your faith, doubts in me, perhaps, doubts in my connection with the gods?"

Shimrra's voice was inside his mind.

"No, Dread One," Jakan gasped as his eyes teared from the pain. "I am a loyal follower of yours, or Yun-Yuuzhan's."

"I see that Jakan. You had a chance to run away from a punishment after the arena battle, but you returned. You are loyal."

The pain suddenly stopped as Jakan's eyes were filed with tiny black spots, and his ears rang.

"The gods are not to be questioned, Jakan. Remember that."

As Jakan staggered out of the court he heard Onimi's mad giggle echoing off the walls.

Great post, Yoda. I really enjoyed the charcaterisations of Jakan and Shimrra. You write their voices well.

the human from domain Solo killed dozens of warriors with his light blade; Cool description, and I can imagine the Vong seeing him that way.

Shimrra is a fascinating character. I suspected him for a while of having a form of the Force. I haven't read the last 2 books yet, so don't know if they ever explained his ability to affect minds.

I'm enjoying all the subterfuge in the story. Everyone has their own agenda. :)

Good luck choosing your excerpts - it's quite tricky. :)

Well I won't ruin it for you, but I'm not going by what the last two NJO books say. Making my own ending ;)

I'm enjoying all the subterfuge in the story. Everyone has their own agenda.

Thanks :D I really like having all these characters to work with in this one. Haven't even introduced them all yet though, this story gets quite large, and its fun writing from all the different POVs.

Good luck choosing your excerpts - it's quite tricky.

Yeah, I haven't even started that....If anyone has any suggestions, Id be more than happy to hear them.

    Chapter 8

"We are your servants, Great one," Yu'shaa said with a deep bow.

Hundreds of shamed ones watched breathlessly from the audience as their leader addressed Anakin for the first time. The dimly lit room felt alive with anticipation.

Gazing around the auditorium, Anakin saw the faces of the shamed. Besides sloped foreheads and shortened noses, they appeared to be nearly human. Most wore simple loincloths and their haggard faces stared at him in exaltation.

Anakin Solo felt a familiar presence in Yu'shaa, but he could not place it. There was deception there that he could not pin point. Perhaps, like many leaders, Yu'shaa was a fraud... But there was something deeper and more important about it.

"Have we met before Yu'shaa?" Anakin asked.

The shamed one was quiet for a moment too long and said, "I do not believe so Jedi; I would remember such a meeting as a great honor, an honor I feel now."

Anakin searched for deception through the Force and felt it in Yu'shaa's answer. He remembered a time when he could not use the Force for such a task when dealing with the Yuuzhan Vong, but he now could. Anakin wasn't sure if it was from his complete immersion into the Force on Myrkr or his shaping at the hands of Nen Yim, but the Yuuzhan Vong were now as clear to him in the Force as anything.

After the shamed ones uprising in the arena, Anakin had traveled with Uhla out of a feeling of debt to the shamed ones and on the possibility that his assistance could lead to the end of the war. The shamed ones had also agreed to hide the thirteen beings that were to have been sacrificed in the ceremony.

"I'm here to help you," Anakin said, keeping his guard up with the smaller-than-average Yuuzhan Vong.

"Of course, Great Jedi," Yu'shaa answered. "You will redeem us as you did Vua Rapuung."

The story of Anakin's adventure with Vua Rapuung had traveled throughout the shamed ones and was the reason so many believed the Jedi could save them. Anakin hoped he could.

Yu'shaa appeared to be growing nervous, his eyes darting round, and sweat beginning to bead on his forehead.

"Perhaps you wish to rest, Great One," Yu'shaa offered. "You have been on a long journey and your wounds should be cared for."

That was true; Anakin was exhausted. His battle in the arena had stretched his ability with the Force and a lightsaber, before putting himself on the run for the two days since, without a moment’s rest. The large cut on his thigh, a memento from the late Hul Choka, was probably infected. The wound was hard and getting more painful. He used all his Force strength just to stay awake and keep moving, leaving him unable to stave off the infection. Running through the moylrri had probably not been the cleanest either. He was to tired to worry about Yu'shaa's deceptions, and why the shamed one had offered a chance to rest.

"Yes. My companion and I have been without rest for three days."

"Then it will be," Yu'shaa said. He issued orders to a group of shamed ones near the dais who escorted Anakin and Uhla to a small room, not far from the auditorium. The shamed ones rose and bowed as they departed.

Anakin lay awake, wrapped in a living blanket in the small dark quarters they'd been given. The blanket hugged his body and was an efficient insulator.

He could hear Uhla’s breathing; she had fallen asleep as soon as Anakin’s healer had left the small, two-cot, room. The shamed one healer had left a dozen tiny Beetles in Anakin's thigh, that ate away at the infection. He was already feeling much better, but still extremely tired...Yet he could not sleep.

Yu'shaa's compound was deep underground and was part of the larger shells the Yuuzhan Vong had planted on the surface. The walls had what looked like veins showing through them and Anakin assumed they pumped in water and oxygen. Though his surroundings were strange, it was his thoughts that kept him from a peaceful rest.

So much had changed... His own body felt alien to him. He had been shaped by the Yuuzhan Vong, lived among them for almost two years, and given the name Yuusung Saa. The Yuuzhan Vong indoctrinated him with the belief that he'd been kidnapped by the infidels when he was young. Yuusung Saa was told the infidels had wanted him for his special powers, and that his mind and body had been tampered with.

He didn't know what the ultimate plan was, but the Yuuzhan Vong had programmed him to hate the Jedi; told him that he would destroy them.

Shimrra had given him the task of building a lightsaber, but Yuuzhan Saa found his own buried under the rubble of a fallen structure. Had it been the lambent inside or the spirit of Ganner Rhysode that had drawn him there? Why had Shimrra wanted him to have a lightsaber? So many questions...

When Yuusung Saa was given his vonduun crab armor for the ceremony, he realized that the armor was from his visions-- the visions where Anakin became Darth Vader.

Yuusung Saa was taken to a ceremony where he was to sacrifice thirteen infidels... Why? With Ganner's help, and the Force, he was able to see the truth and overcome his shaping, killing Yuusung Saa. Anakin saved the sacrifices and defeated the warriors in the arena after the shamed ones came to his aid.

He ran his hands through his hair and sighed. He couldn't sleep because he didn't know. He didn't know the answers to his questions, and he didn't know if his family and Tahiri were still alive. Anakin had wanted to reach out to them with the Force, but knew if they were alive, it would only lead them into a trap. They would come for him here and be destroyed by the Yuuzhan Vong.

So much had changed-- sorting his own thought from memories that were false was difficult, but not impossible. He did feel a deeper understanding of the Yuuzhan Vong now. He felt like one of them. Perhaps that's why he had agreed to help the shamed ones, though he wasn't sure what that would entail; and there was Yu'shaa. He would not turn his back to that one...

Anakin rolled over in his cot a few times. He missed Tahiri. Vague memories of her face, and hair, or the way she smelled, made him long to see her again. Anakin missed everything about her.

Rest, Anakin Solo, he told himself.

He cleared his mind and concentrated on Uhla's breathing, mimicking it until he too, feel asleep.

Nom Anor pounded his fist against the hard rellan wood table, in his quarters, with all his strength and immediately regretted it. The former executor moved his fingers to make sure the hand was not broken, while Kunra stood expressionless by the door.

He touched the side of his nostril and his ooglith masquer peeled away from his face, sliding down his body. The creature traveled down his legs and scurried to it's place in the dank room.

"This is not good, Kunra," Nom Anor vented, trying to come up with a plan. "This is not good at all."

The reaction of the shamed ones to seeing Anakin Solo was to be expected, but not something he was prepared for. Anakin Solo was dead... He was sure of it. How can this be? A clone?

The how didn’t matter. What was Nom Anor going to do?

With the very Jedi the shamed ones believed would save them in the compound, there was no need for Yu'shaa. In one swift entrance, Anakin had stolen every bit of power Nom Anor had worked to gain. When he found the shamed ones, he had nothing, but saw the potential in their heresy, and built it up.

He no longer held power or control. The shamed ones would follow Anakin of course, and he would be discarded. Many of the shamed ones were already disgruntled with Nom Anor's leadership and willingness to sacrifice others.

If only he could find a way to manipulate Anakin...No he was already suspicious of Nom Anor, and would probably figure out who Yu'shaa was if he hadn't already.

How had Anakin Solo recognized him? The Jedi was too great a risk.

Perhaps it was time for nom Anor to return to Shimrra. He could identify the heretics and name Anakin Solo as their leader, but, would it be enough for Shimrra to restore Nom Anor's position among the Yuuzhan Vong, or would he be executed? He didn't want to betray the shamed ones to early and end up dead; he had come to far for that.

"What should we do, Master?" Kunra asked.

Nom Anor glared at the aging shamed one. How far could he trust Kunra? The former warrior had been growing a little to confident since he saved Nom Anor from Shoon-mi's assassination attempt.

Shoon-mi... The reminder of the assassination attempt gave Nom Anor an idea; kill Anakin Solo. The idea of going toe to toe with a Jedi was not an appealing one, but they could not feel Yuuzhan Vong in the Force... How hard could it be?

He looked at Kunra. Could he trust him?

"We must eliminate the Jedi, Kunra. Can I trust you to help me?” Nom Anor asked, watching for the former warrior’s reaction.

Kunra looked troubled by Nom Anor's decision and he nervously rubbed his nose.

"If that is what you wish, Master, I will assist you," Kunra allowed.

Kunra was not a true heretic, only a cowardly shamed one who did Nom Anor's bidding. If he was wondering why Nom Anor wasn't thrilled with the arrival of Anakin Solo, why they were not using Anakin to overthrow Shimrra, he didn't ask.

Nom Anor did not want to oust Shimrra, necessarily, but he did enjoy causing the Supreme Overlord a headache with the shamed one's heresy; however, it was not his wish for a revolution. Nom Anor wanted to thrive in the Yuuzhan Vong caste system, not topple it.

"Do you think the Jedi will be so easily killed?" Kunra asked. His insubordination would not be tolerated under normal circumstances, but Nom Anor needed him now. He would let Kunra have his little victory and question his master... For now.

"Nothing has been easy thus far," Nom Anor answered. "I expect this will be no different."

Nice post, Yoda. I liked having part of it from Anakin's POV. He seems weary of Yuusha (he should be!) and its sad to see him missing Tahiri so much. :( It looks like he's decided to lead the Shamed Ones. Lead them to what is anyone's guess.

So..Nom is gonna try to kill Anakin? He doesn't have a chance. Anakin can see him in the Force. :D

    JOD's a scarhead!!!!!!

I knew you'd find me out eventually. I'm the true mastermind behind the Vong invasion. Guess I didn't plan it very well. We're not doing to well. ;)

LMAO! I have been thinking about making a humor thread of "onimi's poetry"

    I'd read that!

Oh boy, Nom Anor is in for a nasty shock when he realises that Anakin CAN see him in the Force. I enjoyed both Anor's and Anakin's inner monologues here. Poor Anakin - yearning for Tahiri. Hopefully he'll get his wish - eventually. :)

Kunra's a wiley old so and so. I like him. I'm also enjoying the use of the Vong animals and bio-tech. Nice work with that. :) The story is moving along really well.

Yeah, Nom Anor might be surprised just how hard it is to kill a Jedi ;) As far as Anakin finding Tahiri.....you'll just have to wait and see :D

This was another fanastic post, YodaKenobi. I like how you've incorporated Anakin's strength in the Force over to the Vongsense he gained while they were attempting to shape him.

Looking forward to the next post. :)

Why do the (Y-V) change their atitude about
    brutal abuse
-if the determined leader wants some respect
    they just dish the abuse
-Shmirra is letting the simple tug of the high life get away from this standard
-maybe the tones of fealty are played through in these physical brutalities ways
just beyond the scene being written and a glimpse of that could keep the fun of having
them looked at as all time 'horrors'

hmmmmm... I'm not really sure what you mean. When did the Yuuzhan Vong change their attitude about brutal abuse?

    Thanks for reading :D
