Going by JAT's twitter at least, it seems as though they were initially going to use him for the voice work then they managed to get Ewan to do it. So in the film, it's just Ewan and zombie-Guiness with JAT getting all the credit .

Han stepping out after Kylo Ren and hollerin' "BEN!" to get his attention really awesome, wasn't it? Very Han, just cut to the centre of the problem and to hell with everything.

There were a lot of things going through my brain at that moment when first watching it but I will admit near the top was "EU reference!" (I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the Solo kid name went through a bunch of people & the EU savy Story Group members brought the "Ben" name up & the filmmakers liked it)

I swear, I thought for a moment that he was, and I was ready to flip out. Though, to be fair, as references go, Ben wasn't disappointing.

 

I just had an awkward EU-related conversation with my family after watching the movie. They were lamenting the fact that "city planet from the other movies" got destroyed, but they thought it was really well done, etc etc. So like any Litizen I had to say "Well no, that wasn't Coruscant..." But it was met with... confusion...

"That wasn't the city planet? It looked just like the city planet.""No that was definitely the city planet.""I don't care what the books say -- nobody reads the books -- that was the city planet."

"But no it wasn't the city planet..."

"You're going to believe the books over what we saw in the movie?"

"But they say in the movie it's the Hosnian System..."

"That doesn't mean anything. What if the system has a different name than the planet? The movie makers obviously meant it to be the city planet."

/argument lost

 

On vey. Guess they didn't get Disney's memo that the books are equal canon with the movies.

This is exactly what I was thinking a few pages back--our baggage actually makes it harder to follow than for people with purely casual interest, even if they're not technically getting the correct impression. If you walk out of the movie still thinking that was Coruscant, it makes more sense.

 

On the other hand, this means that the movie was unclear - either they develop Hosnian or they blow up Coruscant. That is to say, it's not our baggage so much as the movie choosing to make the totally new and unfamiliar planet with no story development look just like Coruscant.

 

It SHOULD have been Coruscant.

Maybe they can rename it in the Very Special Edition.

 

But why does it matter to someone who isn't gonna spend the next eighteen months thinking about it? Now, if Coruscant shows up in VIII or IX, different story.

 

I honestly don't think it matters if they think it's Coruscant or not... unless Coruscant comes into later movies but I'm not going to until then.

 

You're right, it doesn't matter, except that the intention of the filmmaker is thwarted by unclear storytelling. Does it matter that Jakku isn't Tatooine? Not in any real life, sense.
