LFL Press books can be much harder to obtain in the UK. Used to be both Book Depository and Wordery took orders for them, but they stopped doing so mid-2020. Strangely BD tend to offer the books via Amazon Marketplace but not their own site. Wordery has been severely hit by Covid, they are listing both books but not for pre-order.

Amazon will get a limited stock but tends to take a little time and they go with the official release date - which over here is 18 Feb. The same date has been applied to Test of Courage too.

    So, it might be that:
    • Amazon gets copies faster than expected - what happened with Freefall
    • BD offer copies via Amazon Marketplace after 18 Feb
    • Wordery get limited, buy as soon as you see them copies in before or around 18 Feb

I'm not sure when my physical copy will get here, sadly. I'm actually incredibly fortunate this time round - I write for Screen Rant, and Lucasfilm actually gave us digital review copies to pre-prepare content. I'm still buying the books because I want to support them, and frankly I want to read and reread and re-reread them; there's nothing like a physical book. But no idea when I'll get that copy.

Plus the LFL hardbacks are quality volumes too, worth the money.

Oh and there's two new adversaries to contend with now: Darths Covid and Brexit.

Well, if it is 'buy and download this play anywhere mp3' then yes.

But they tend to screw it up by you having to use - and likely pay for - a specific platform to play it.

Not sure if this has been pointed out but Amazon UK is advertising their copies as first edition.

Could be either a US import or a UK first edition.

I love that Claudia Gray fancasts her own books. I can definitely see McConaughey as a Jedi, especially a Qui-Gon, Aveross, TCW Quinlan Vos type. Like his character in Contact.

So I haven’t stepped out of the adult SW novels ever but I’m making an exception as Orla Jareni looks sooo cool and interesting.

So surprised there’s so little discussion/hype for this one. Everything Gray has put out for Star Wars has been top shelf.

I’ve got all day road trip on Wednesday so I’ll be picking up the audiobook.

    Very excited.

I think there's not much to say right now, more just quiet positive anticipation.

It didn't officially come out until today, despite hitting shelves early at some major retailers. Today is the first day for ebook readers like me or audiobook listeners like you to actually start reading/listening to it (though I myself am a bit busy and might not get around to starting it for a few days).

I'm halfway done with a readthrough of the Thrawn Trilogy (literally 50% through Dark Force Rising) and I hate to interrupt reading a series - bad timing on my part. But my copy of Into the Dark got to my local indie bookstore today, so I will definitely be starting it as soon as I finishing The Last Command.

Started reading this book yesterday. I'm thirty percent through it according to my trusty Kindle, and I'm truly enjoying it so far. When the High Republic books were announced, this was the one I was most looking forward to because it was by Claudia Gray, who has impressed me with all of her Star Wars entries so far. For me, thus far, Into the Dark has been no exception. Her prose remains wonderful--striking a good balance between rich, poetic detail and crisp, sharp action with her flashes of clever wit in the dialogue and narration that I always appreciate--and she really knows how to dive into the hearts and minds of her varied cast of characters, exploring and understanding what makes them all tick on a deep level. There are also some interesting aspects of Jedi and Force lore sprinkled throughout with some fascinating meditations on interplay between the Light and the Dark Side of the Force.

More detailed thoughts beneath the spoiler tag:

Reath is a great character. His work ethic, bookishness, and genuine drive to learn everything and to prefer the Archives to adventures is very relatable to me (it's probably what I'd be like if I were a Jedi, haha), and I like the conflict that comes from this character being forced to go on a dangerous adventure and truly grow and stretch himself. It works especially well for coming of age, YA fiction. Also it is nice that some of his attitudes about the backward frontier and its people are challenged and seemingly will evolve as a result of his experiences in this book.

Affie is another cool character. I love her personality. And Geode is a neat idea for a sort of rock species.

A Jedi folklorist is fascinating and the focusing on myth in this story is really interesting to me.

Jora is more likable to me in this book than in Light of the Jedi, and I've really loved all the Master and Padawan relationships we get to see in the High Republic era. They are consistently awesome and each one feels unique and special.

And the relationship that Reath has with Dev, his Master's former Padawan, who is now a Knight is compelling as well especially since Dev is different from Reath but can still slot into a sort of mentoring and understanding role.

The plot comes from the fallout of the hyperspace disaster we see in Light of the Jedi and there are conflicts between different groups of beings stranded in one spot and competing for resources (almost like a desert island type story but the characters are marooned in a space station instead) but at its core, this story is about characters, and Claudia does a good job of entering the minds and hearts of a varied bunch of characters, bringing them vividly to life for me.

There are also some interesting flashbacks to a past mission that to me add to the story and work well. The flashback technique sort of reminds me of what she did in her earlier Master and Apprentice book. I enjoyed her flashbacks there, and I enjoy them now. Makes the past and present of characters feel intertwined and shows how the past shapes people.

Another Claudia Gray book that based on what I have read thus far I would whole-heartedly recommend to those interested in unique, well-explored characters and fascinating Force lore and legends.

I really don't have anything critical to say. Claudia Gray writes really well, and I continue to be grateful that she writes Star Wars books for me to enjoy!

Loving it thusfar, Reath Silas is the first character I’ve connected with in a SW novel in a long time, “a long time.” :ben:

Big improvement over Light of the Jedi, though I expected nothing less from Claudia Gray. My issue with LotJ was that it was a lore dump more than a story. Now we get stories with a central cast.

Still, I read this one as a Clauda Gray fan, not as a High Republic fan. The concept still has some ways to go for me to get there.

I’m enjoying the book so far. About 3/4 of the way through. I like Reath and Affie a lot although I think (so far) there were better written characters in LoTJ like Bell, Porter Engle and Kasav.

I’m listening to the audiobook however over a 10 hour drive yesterday and so it’s possible I might’ve been distracted here or there so I didn’t get run over or lost! I’ll finish the book on my return trip and excited to get to the climax of the story that’s been building.

I really wish Star Wars would dabble more into derelict space stations and ghost ships. Makes for such good mystery.

When I finish the audiobook I plan to sit down with it and do a more thorough read through and take my time with the story.

Definitely enjoying it so far. I've only known Gray's work by reputation (I haven't had reading leisure time for many years and am forcing myself to make it for the High Republic stuff) but I'm finding that she's living up to it. All of the High Republic material thus far has had really good character work but something about this book's cast and the way they're written feels especially "warm" to me, for lack of a better word. And even though it's essentially unfolding within or alongside several other narratives I already know, the central mysteries really have me hooked.

Claudia is brillant. She has me hooked. I really hope she does the book edition of The Acolyte which will be set during the same High Republic era.

Yeah, as I mentioned, I haven't read much lit for quite a few years due to being so damn busy; I've followed the comics and kept up with lit via reviews and comments, mostly here, and I've known that Gray is regarded as a great writer, besides which she's written about stuff that's of particular interest to me. At this point I feel like, if I ever have time to do a proper "catch up", I'm heading straight to her stuff first. It's not likely any time soon, though.
