    Drabble 12

    Basics:
Mara can’t cook but Luke knows that. Anniversary. Mush.

Extra info: Decided to use a previous MMM challenge prompt as inspiration for this Drabble.
MMM Challenge #1: Write a story in which a character (or characters) plans something special for another character (or characters).

    All Good Sense

Smoke greeted Luke as he entered their apartment. In the living room an alarm screeched on the ceiling. It was crumpled by invisible hands and promptly Force-thrown out the balcony doors.

    “Mara?”

    “… Kriffing sith!”

Luke made his way to the kitchen. There he found his wife, the ex-assassin, waving a towel to flush out the fumes.

“I thought we both agreed not to use that word anymore.” He kidded from the doorway.

    Mara scowled at him.

    “What were you making?”

“Nothing.” She picked up a tray with some ashen remains and chucked it into the bin.

Luke watched her fuss about the room. Mara avoided eye contact. Cleaning the same spot numerous times in the stony silence.

    “Mara.”

The gentleness in his tone made her stop.

She turned around to face him. His blue eyes remained steady on hers.

Mara cleared her throat and explained,
    “It’s our … anniversary.”

    “I know.”

“And I tried to … cook.”

Luke’s brows rose a bit. He had not expected that or for her to admit it. Neither of them was exactly culinarily inclined.

    “Ah.”

Mara released the cloth she’d been using on the countertop and sighed,
    “Yeah.”

Understanding her disappointment, Luke stepped closer and took her hands,
    “It’s okay, Mara.”

    “It’s a disaster.”

“Not true. You are safe and the apartment hasn’t burnt down. We both know that if things were reversed, I would have set the entire place alight.”

Her lips quirked and a little tension left her shoulders,
“And I would’ve had to save you from the flames.”

    Luke chuckled,
    “Because I’m so helpless?”

“No because you lack self-preservation instincts.”

“Well then,” His arms hugged her close, “it’s a good thing I have you to keep me safe.”

An old spark returned to her green eyes as she looked up at her husband’s light-hearted smile. He was teasing her. And those boyish dimples of his were working their charm.

Resting her hands on his chest, she leant in and whispered,
“Just remember it all started with me wanting to kill you.”

“How could I forget?” He winked, “That’s when I lost all good sense of self-preservation.”

“Oh, you’re so going to pay for that.”

Luke kissed her cheek softly and negotiated,
“How about I pay for dinner instead?”

    “Hmm.”

    Mara eyed his suspiciously.

    “What?”

“You’ve already got a table booked, haven’t you?”

    Sheepishly, Luke nodded,
“Yes, at a five-star restaurant on the other side of Coruscant, it was meant to be a surprise -”

“- and here I was trying to surprise you.” Mara shook her head in amusement, “What a pair we make.”

    “Full of surprises, aren’t we?”

He grinned mischievously and Mara couldn’t resist any longer.

She closed the gap between them and locked her lips to his. The taste of him sent a thrill through her. When his arms tightened at her waist a gasp of excitement left her in rush.

Luke returned the kiss, savouring its sweetness and how his heart raced. She was addictive. Dangerous to all his senses. The hot caress of her mouth easily began to derail his plans for the evening.

They weren’t going to make it to the restaurant.

“I’m reading your thoughts …” She breathed.

“So, you agree?” He murmured, “We won’t make it.”

Reluctantly, Mara pulled out of his embrace,
“Yes, we will. I’m going to grab a shower and change. I don’t want us to waste another surprise. We’ll leave in twenty. Sound good?”

Though his body disagreed, his voice managed to say with convincing enthusiasm,
    “Sounds great.”

Sporting a saucy smirk, Mara exited the kitchen.

Left alone to recover, Luke exhaled a long-frustrated breath. The Jedi Master was rattled. But he could rein in his urges. Afterall, they had the whole evening together.

Then he heard the shower turn on.

It was the most distracting sound in the universe.

    That was until ...

“Luke ..?” Mara called seductively, “Won’t you join me?”

Just like that all good sense, noble intentions and best laid plans evaporated.

She didn’t need to ask twice.

And they definitely weren’t going to make their dinner reservation.

    Fin.

    Drabble 13

Basics: It’s Jaina’s wedding day and her nerves are getting the best of her. Luckily, she has the best mum! Mother-daughter moment, mush, sweetness!

    ~

    Ready?

Her chest felt tight. Every breath a chore.

It wasn’t the dress. White, silky, the stunning garment hugged her body perfectly. No, the dress was fine.

Her make-up was done, highlighting her features, easily enhancing her beauty. She should have been happy with the end result.

Brunette tresses coiled up into a stylish bun upon her head, whilst the rest fell down her back, curl flowing into curl. Small jewels and silver clips wove effortlessly throughout her dark locks, glittering under the lights.

Jaina stared at herself in the mirror. She felt like a stranger to herself. This was not her comfort zone and it showed.

The hairdresser was finishing up. The lovely lady was talking but Jaina didn’t hear a word. She nodded along. Even managed a fake smile. But Jaina didn’t reply. She couldn’t.

“Thank you, ladies,” A familiar voice brought Jaina out of her mind and back to reality, “now if you don’t mind, I would just like a few moments alone with the bride.”

All the other women, finely dressed and talking excitedly amongst themselves, exited the room.

Still standing before the tall mirror, Jaina watched as her mother approached. Leia stopped at her side. They stared at each other in the glass, so alike, their family connection obvious in every feature.

In the mirror, Leia’s features softened at the sight of her daughter in a wedding gown.

    “You’re nervous.”

    It wasn’t a question.

Jaina looked away and began fiddling with her dress,
    “I’m fine.”

Gently, Leia placed her hands on her daughter’s shoulders. She felt the tension there and squeezed reassuringly.

Head down, Jaina paused all movement and took a shaky breath.

    Leia whispered into her ear,
“It’s natural to be nervous. It’s a big day. It’s your day.”

    “It feels like someone else’s.”

“It’s not just the wedding, is it?”

Jaina wouldn’t meet her mother’s gaze.

    Eventually she replied,
“I’m not ready. This new life – it’s so different. I’m not sure I can do it.”

“I think you, more than most, are aware of all the trappings power can bring.” Her mother offered softly, “I also believe that you are strong enough not to fall for any of them. You’ve always forged your own path, with or without others approval. I see no reason why you can’t mould this new role to your will. To make it yours.”

Jaina glimpsed back up as she voiced her fears,
“What if I’m not enough? What if I fail?”

“Then you will pick yourself back up,” Leia answered simply, “and you will learn. Just as Jagged will. Everyone stumbles, Jaina. No one is ‘enough’ at the start of anything. Life is one big lesson full of study, practice, trial and error. It’s this which allows us to grow, that helps us to meet new challenges one after the other. But remember you won’t be alone in this one.”

There was a short silence. Leia caressed Jaina’s cheek, then placed her fingertips underneath her chin so she could turn her face so they were eye-to-eye.

Mother and daughter shared a heartfelt look.

“Empress or not, you should always hold your head up high.” Tenderly Leia kissed her daughter’s forehead and added, her voice full of emotion, “You are extraordinary.”

    Tears appeared in Jaina’s eyes,
    “Thanks, Mum.”

“Now, do I need to postpone anything?” The older woman teased, “I will if you want me to. Jagged will be disappointed of course but I’m sure your father would be happy to help in an escape plan of some kind.”

Jaina laughed and hugged her mother tight,
“No, I don’t need an escape plan,” she pulled back and finished, “though I appreciate the offer.”

    “So, you ready?”

“To become an Empress, no, definitely not.” Jaina began to smile, “But a wife? To Jag? - Yes. Absolutely.”

    “Then let’s get going.”

Arm-in-arm Leia and Jaina headed out of the room.

The door whooshed open for them.

In his best suit, Han stood in the hallway waiting. He took one glance at his wife and daughter, gave a proud lopsided-grin and pulled them both into a fierce embrace.

Slowly the door hissed shut behind them.

Jaina would forever remember that scene.

The memory of being in front of that mirror so afraid, full of doubt, scared of the coming future. Then the peace her mother’s wise words brought, easing the weight she felt on her slim shoulders, filling her with hope.

The fight to hold back the threatening tears, the way they’d teased each other to relieve the building tension and how her father had held out an arm to escort her to the ceremony, all of it was fresh in her memory. Hers forever. To hold and to cherish.
