The Karate Kid was one of my favorite childhood films.
Well I just stumbled upon all of this rehearsal footage. It's pretty much the entire movie in rehearsal stage.

He also uploaded auditions and the read through.

Given that the lot next their/the South Seas apartment building remains empty, someone ought to build/open up a karate studio there. I think that could work.

That is unacceptable for a So-Cal kid :p!

This is one of the seminal films of my childhood. It's right there with E.T. and Back to the Future. The crane kick and the various Cobraisms have become the stuff of parody, but damn if this film doesn't still hold up. It crane kicks its way right through my cynicism.

The sequels are increasingly ridiculous, though I still love them. And even the 2010 remake was much better than it had any right to be.

We've all learned two important life lessons from Karate Kid - if Cobra Kai trashes your bike, you are not only allowed, but expected to have your building superintendent kick their ass on Halloween. And if your opponent is about to sweep your leg, kick him in the face. Then you steal his hot girlfriend. No mercy.

Even though the 2010 remake was NOT ABOUT KARATE?

Damn, I'm going to have to watch some of that.

Love that movie... classic underdog story.

It's actually total coincidence that I ended up studying the unnamed form of karate he learns in the movie :)

Yeah, I get the importance of brand recognition and all, but I think people could've made the connection if they'd titled it The Kung-Fu Kid.

Another problem is that "Karate Kid" was something Daniel was derisively dubbed by Freddie Fernandez, the fair weather sleazebag from his apartment complex who actually had the audacity to come rushing out onto the floor at the end and lift Daniel into the air. I don't think Dre had a similar instance, so the title--Karate or Kung-Fu Kid--is just plain dumb without that explanation.

I don't recall anyone lifting Ralph Maccio into the air.

I'm fully on board w/this. At first I feared they were setting this up as a spoof/comedy (the creators are the people behind Hot Tub Time Machine and the Harold and Kumar series), but it sounds like this is a drama w/a very solid premise. A down on his luck Johnny Lawrence reopens the Cobra Kai dojo and takes a bulled teen (not unlike Daniel) under his wing. Meanwhile Daniel is a successful and happily married man who's pulled back into his old rivalry w/Johnny. Johnny also has a son who is determined to not be like his father. Lots of opportunity for good dramatic dynamics here.

Do we know that's the story?

I sort of got the impression from the teaser that they're going to pull a fast one on us, and it's going to be Johnny and Daniel teaming up to reopen Cobra Kai to redeem the name?

I never saw the sequels. are they worthwhile? Original was great, and the remake was decent, despite the misleading title and three hour runtime.

The Karate Kid, Part II is excellent (and I actually consider it a better film than the first one, but has virtually none of the "lightning in a bottle" of the first one), as well as explaining what happened to Johnny and Kreese after the All-Valley tournament.

The last two films are terrible, and I say this as someone who has never seen The Next Karate Kid which is only noteworthy AFAIK because it stars future Oscar-winner Hillary Swank.

That (what I posted) was the basic plot outline in several of the articles I read, including @ Rolling Stone and Entertainment Weekly, so I'm assuming it's legit.

As long as they're not painfully awful like most of the Rocky sequels. Except for III which I have a soft spot for.

You take that back you son of a bitch! Rocky IV is the best montage movie of all time!

FYI: The Next Karate Kid is way better than KK3.
