The Child eating those eggs really made me want to give the bugger an old-fashioned slap. Pretty much nearly killed the group by waking the spiders as well. Clearly Mando needs to step up his parenting or at least pay more attention.

Overall disappointing episode for me. I mean, I liked it but it didn’t move forward at all. Suppose I’m just annoyed there’s no sign of other mandalorians or the Jedi. That Frog lady better know where to find the mando’s.

I like how the second episode of each season centers around eggs, a symbol of birth or new life (much like the Child, who even rides around in a floating egg). In Chapter 2, Mando's mission is to steal an egg from its mother so it can be consumed by Jawas. In Chapter 10, he has to protect a mother's eggs from harm, showing that he's progressing from hunter to caretaker. Then there are the spider's eggs, where we see the Child's carnivorism coming back to bite the heroes. The final button where the Child eats one last egg suggests he may not have grasped that his actions were wrong, and that much to learn, he still has.

For all the complaints of "filler" episodes, this show sure knows how to give us character growth in subtle ways through symbolism.

I'll be honest, this was probably my least favourite episode so far. Don't get me wrong there was a lot that I liked, especially in terms of design and atmosphere which continues to be stellar. The ice planet was cool, especially the inside of the caves. I liked the new frog character. They way she carries her eggs and the way she runs on all fours when in danger is the kind of quirkiness that has really endeared me to this show.

I guess I'm just a little impatient. Seeing Boba at the end and then opening on Tatooine made me think we were going to see him. There was a bunch of things like that that happened this episode. There was speculation that the ice planet was Ilum, but it seems like that wasn't the case.

There were several times this episode that I thought something big with Baby Yoda was going to happen and we were going to get more info into who he is. Maybe some of it will still come to fruition. I had a feeling him eating the eggs was more than just him being hungry... like maybe he was hatching them somehow?

When the X-Wings pilots started shooting, I thought it might be more Mandalorians, seeing how they are supposed to be in the sector. And then when they said the Mando has an arrest warrant for the abduction of a prisoner, I wondered if they were talking about Baby Yoda for a minute. But I guess they were just talking about Qin.

It was almost like a mini TLJ - all those expectations subverted! :p

I also didn't need more Dave Filoni as an X-Wing pilot. It took me out the first time and it was worse here.

I had to watch this episode one more time before settling on a verdict. For some reason I really liked it. Can't really put my finger on why, and I do get those who didn't like it.

Every step of the way, Din is met with resistance. Ranging from trivial stuff to potentially fatal situations. It's a constant struggle. I like the fact that they can slow down the pace and show things on a smaller scale but at the same time pave the way for more world building. We know Gideon is on the prowl, as well as many bounty hunters, but the inevitable confrontation will come in due course. It's the journey I like the most. Details here and there being fleshed out.

As for the frog lady, I was a bit hesitant at first but felt they nailed it pretty good. I personally didn't have a problem with BY eating the eggs, but I understand those who do.

    I actually gave it 8/10.

With The Election I couldn't watch till today,
Finally saw the second episode of Mandalorian I loved it the episode had a Stephen king creepy feel to it! I loved how The Child kept eating the eggs! I thought the Ice planet was ILum but then when Baby Yoda came across the eggs first thing I am thinking is the Alien prequel Prometheus and then I'm like these are eggs where is the bigger momma! Loved the Dave Filoni cameo!

The spiders were bloody amazing, and definitely the standout thing about the episode. I love me some monsters, and season 2 has had two memorable ones in two episodes. Bravo. I'm guessing that in-universe those things (or at least variations of) are all over the galaxy. Always love seeing unused McQuarrie designs in live-action.

I do hope they show a little more if these various planets going forward. Was kinda looking forward to for an extended look at the ice planet. For whatever reason SWs stuff looks cool with ice.

Did I watch an episode that had a frog in a hot tub?!
    Great action.
Surprised that the X-wing pilots would save Mando and then just take off without making sure Mando and company could actually leave. That ship took an absurd amount of damage.
Baby Yoda seems to forget his force powers when they are needed most.
Enjoyable enough and looking forward to the next episode.

This was ok, but one of my least favorite episodes thus far. I liked “Frog Lady,” I liked the way she ran on all fours. Hated Baby Yoda eating her eggs.
I enjoyed the “Alien” homage, but wasn’t impressed with the standard monster-of-the-week-type story we ended up getting. The special effects do continue to impress, though! Pretty great what they can do.

By the way, this might just be me, but I never (even as a kid) got a monster-of-the-week vibe from McQuarry’s original spider drawing. To me it seemed like an image of Luke watching weird, creepy alien lifeforms go about their business, not him watching a monster that was going to eat him. Anywayz.

    Says me.

That's not what keeps my interest in the show. I'm interested in leaning answers to the mysteries they presented in Season 1. If they drag it too much, they're going to lose me. And I'm a SW fan. Everybody I know that isn't that much into SW already stopped watching this show precisely because they got bored with the whole "adventure of a week" concept.

The crux of the matter is, if standalone little adventures with Mando and BY in the backwaters of the SW galaxy are enough for you, cause you enjoy the wacky stories and characters, you're going to enjoy this. But if you want a continuous story that constantly progresses, like in GoT or The Boys for example, you're going to get bored very quickly with this show. Even South Park made fun of that in one of its episodes.

That's the division we have on this forum as well. Half the posts here like the episode, cause it is a fun little adventure with weird creatures, and the other half, including me, don't like it that much precisely because its ONLY that.

Maybe when this whole season is finished and we find out that this episode sets up some super important story element or from now on every episode will substantially move the story forward, I'll look back at this episode fondly as a moment of innocent action before the real story begins. Or maybe most of this season really is just "monster of the week" and the main story stuff will happen in the last 2-3 episodes, when Gideon and the Empire returns ala episodic TV...

I think if the show went full mytharc full time it would get too big too fast. I like the small scale story of a bounty hunter out in the grungy boonies. It’s more Mos Eisley cantina Star Wars. When we start getting Jedi and Empire we’re gonna start treading places that IMO Star Wars has done a bunch of times before. Which isn’t to say I won’t enjoy the heck out of it if it does become that.

Eh, I think greater myth arc investment is usually a good thing... provided you’re smart enough to use multiple myth arcs and maintain strong episode to episode quality. Very few creators are capable of making sure *every single episode* building towards a *single* plotline works... but you create one or two interesting sideplots you can bring up a bit more consistently as breaks, it can be fun.

I would like to if we had a few more “breather” episodes that still delivered decent humanoid antagonists, or even some kind fo smaller subplot that could pop up whenever needed, like decently threatening but not overwhelming gang that has a bone to pick with Mando who can provide recurring antagonists or at least recurring theme antagonists.

...But I’ll confess I know I’m a bit too much of a staunch “serialized fiction is better than episodic fiction” guy for my own good, and that The Mandalorian has maintained general consistency in quality enough that its more of an argument of preference than quality.

The other thing i liked is they are playing with the child's morality. He could be just a little mischievous or maybe going down the darkside a little. It is an interesting difference between him and the wise teacher yoda. At the very least it shows we all have to start somewhere

As much as I enjoyed GoT, Favreau's best decision was to make this show the very opposite of that one. He went simple. And the adventure of the week format is part of that (though I know it'll all tie into the larger story). The biggest problem many post-GoT shows have is trying to match it with levels of convolution and cynicism that are just way too over the top. And obviously imitative. Favreau went for less clutter, and that's exactly what we need right now. Simple lessons, simple imagery, and some silence. This show offers a feeling of...calm almost. For some that's boring. For me, it hits the zeitgeist right on the nose.

    I agree 200%.

The show lets you breathe. It's not reliant on bombastic/epic showdowns at every turn. Character focus with soothing imagery is a key factor. It's not perfect, but it's the pinnacle of Star Wars at the moment and it really brings back the nostalgia in a good way for me, at the same time expanding.

GoT is a different beast altogether. I would rather compare this show to something like Deadwood in some cases. They're not the same thing of course, but I mean the slow pace, character evolution, likable dialogue, sudden bursts of violence.

I can sense the folks who write on the side and value intricate plotting growing increasingly frustrated by the last or sustained antagonism or forward momentum of plot and there’s a tiny part of me who also hopes we don’t spend too many more of the S2 arc on monster of the week scenarios but there’s also another part of me who values atmosphere and action direction and humor who just had a hell of a good time watching that episode based on those elements.

My favorite single aspect though was seeing how different former Rebel Alliance folks, now policing aspects of the galaxy, could be from Stormtroopers in the same roles. Less rigid in policy or group think. More willing to make exceptions. More rebellious overall. That was cool.

I get the impression that the Child acting slightly child-like in curiosity and hunger annoyed some fans but as a parent of a young boy right now who can’t stop finding ways to get some of his sister’s Halloween candy right now I thought it was a nice touch that reminded that the role Mando is in with him isn’t easy. It does and should come with the odd unexpected challenge related to guardianship and so I actually enjoyed that. It was also kind of darkly comedic to see him consume like the last of a line’s egg supply like that. The dark humor fan in me found that quite amusing in a twisted way. Lol

That is part of it for me...but also that it seems like they put all these obstacles in his way just to put all the obstacles in his way. He gets attacked in the desert by a group of people who obviously walked out there because they did not have a vehicle there, has to walk back to town because previous comment, has to stay in real space, gets hassled by 'the man', crashes the ship on a frozen planet, has to repair the ship to get off world, has to fight the spiders, gets saved by 'the man' who then says "you know we should arrest you right now....but whatever...".

Really liked this one. Spiders were the creepiest thing I've seen in Star Wars in a while, I was genuinly wondering how they were gonna get out of it! Baby Yoda eating things and causing problems was funny, my only issue with the first two episodes so far is I still cannot stand the Tatooine mechanic lady, idk if its how she's written or the over the top way its performed, but her character just doesnt fit with the show at all and every line of dialogue she has totally takes me out of it. Hopefully we don't see her again this season.

Other than that though, I agree with everything people are saying, I personally didn't like parts of season one because I wanted the story to move a lot quicker and it felt very aimless. To me so far season two is a marked improvement because there's slightly more of an overall narrative thrust to keep momentum going between episodes. Giving Mando the overall quest to "return baby yoda/find mandalorians" is a lot more then he had last season and I'm cool with it. At first I couldn't stand the "adventure of the week" thing it was trying to do but now that I know that's what it's gonna be I've found the adventures a lot more enjoyable. It really is a throwback to a simpler kind of storytelling, and it's great!

Someone above said the show feels very calming at times, and I totally agree. This series doesn't feel like anything else in Star Wars right now or any of the other giant big franchises. It's not moving a thousand miles per hour, and it's taking it's time. I'm here for it. As long as the individual adventures keep being fun and exciting, I'm fine to not have the overall arc make much progress.

    This is the way!
