I must be the only SW fan in the universe who doesn't see anything worthwhile in Qui-Gon. I've just read a couple hundred messages on this topic to learn where everyone's coming from, and I'm astounded at the level of devotion here to a character I see as merely incompetent at best and criminally stupid at worst.

In every aspect of his life that matters-- politician, master/teacher/father, fencer, mystic, Force power--Qui-Gon's a failure. His limited abilities, disobedience and poor judgement eventually result in wars, the destruction of the Jedi Council (and the deaths of all the members but Yoda and Obi-Wan), and the mediocrity that is Obi-Wan's life and career (leading to the rise of Darth Vadar). Show me just ONE example of Qui-Gon's actions not ultimately proving disastrous for himself, his padawan and everyone else around him. The guy is poison.

QGJ had a big nose,I know THAT much.In the GFFA though,I think he was the only Jedi that had his head screwed on straight and that, had HE trained Anakin, there would've been no Darth Vader(however I'm the world's biggest DV-fan,so I'm glad Qui got impaled!).

I happen to be a big Obi-Wan fan (surprise, surprise...no surprise :D ) and I'm glad Qui-Gon exists, otherwise Obi-Wan may not be trained that well.

    "Don't touch anything!"

No, seriously, Anakin did fulfill the prophecy in the end. Qui-Gon was right about him all along.

Qui-Gon did bring disaster, but ultimately, he did the right thing by taking Anakin to the Jedi.

Qui-gon said that Anakin was the chosen one.
The 'chosen one' would bring balance to the force.
The Jedi thought that, that meant that all the Sith would go bye bye. But balance is NOT 10,000 Jedi and 0 sith/dark Jedi

So Anakin would have had to destroy at least 9,998 Jedi so that there would be a balance. And that is what he did.
There for Qui-gon was right and all became well in the galaxy. Balance was brought. (the must be one other evil guy that is unknown at that point because you cant wipe out all evil. And Luke is still there sooo. . . .)

There is a story called 'Legacy' that has this point in it. And it is beautiful !! Qui-gon and Luke Skywalker talk.

    http://www.qui-gonline.org/fanfic/legacymarnie.htm

Not actually advertising my story someone else?s and it makes what happens in the saga soo clear and understandable. This point is soo clearly stated.

Saying balance requires equal amounts of good & evil is like saying your body needs equal amounts of cancer cells and normal, healthy ones to live. The Dark Side=cancer. It's not natural.

Anyway..not too much to say about QGJ right now, besides that his nose is mighty pointy in Star Wars: Obi-Wan.

And has anyone noticed that there are very few comics where Qui-Gon actually looks like he does in the movie?

I love Qui-Gon's character. He is a great counterpoint to the conservativism of the Jedi at that time, and Obi-Wan's devotion to him adds much to Obi-Wan's character. The fact that he knows Anakin must be trained, and his connection to the Living force add to the story, and Liam Neeson was the perfect choice to play him. Qui-Gon is, IMHO, one of the high points of the PT.

I love posing the whole "What if?" question, so...

What if Qui-Gon hadn't been in tune with the living force, hadn't insisted on Anakin's training...Anakin might have not had Jedi training, might not have learned anything from Obi-Wan, and in the end, the whole redemption scene may never have happened.

Qui-Gon was the one who started Anakin's Jedi training, so I think he deserves some credit for it.
If Qui-Gon doesn't exist, balance to the force may well never happen.
    (Besides, that, Liam Neeson rocks.)

    New question for everyone:

What if Qui-Gon had lost the bet back on Tatooine? What decision would he make then?

Good question, JediKenobi. Qui-Gon was a maverick. I think he was determined to train Anakin, and nothing would have stood in his way of this. I can easily see him running off with the boy and lying to everyone about how he "inherited" him. All for the greater good, of course. [face_whistling] :D

qui gon was everything wrong with the jedi at the time. its quiet possible he too was the phantom menace IMO..even dooko in AOTC told Obi not to be so sure...

QUI-GON : Podracing... Greed can be a powerful ally.. if it's used properly. (wow, exactly what a jedi should not think)

SHMI : I don't want you to race, Annie...It's awful. I die every time Watto makes you do it.

(forshadowing..she says die everytime. qui gon is silent..he wants Ani to race. He races, he is free and she dies in AOTC and Ankin can't help her)

QUI-GON : You should be proud of your son. He gives without any thought of reward.

SHMI : He knows nothing of greed. (not yet)

    The kicker:
WATTO : We'll let fate decide. Blue it's the boy, red his mother...

WATTO tosses the cube down. QUI-GON lifts his hand slightly; it turns blue. QUI-GON smiles.

    ---------

QUI-GON : I tried to free your mother, Annie, but Watto wouldn't have it. (thats a flat out lie)

it would have been the will of the force for fate to decide which way the dice would tumble. the fact IMO that qui gon manipulated the taking of anakin is GREED.

Greed: "An excessive desire to acquire or possess more than what one needs or deserves"

and later as Qui gon is dying he calls OBI a wise jedi, even wiser then him.

"Don't defy the Council, Master..not again"

I would be interested in knowing exactly what OBi wan is refering to
