Wow. Bezos' ship is a giant ****.

These billionaires want to live on Elysium so badly.

I think space flight has its uses, but it shouldn’t be done by billionaires.

“I technically went to space.” From the makers of “you are all technically independent contractors.”

I think it very fitting that Jeff Bezos fly to space in penis shape rocket.

Seeing the amount of complete sycophants who surround these billionaires and who seem to only be there to vigorously applaud them for anything they do, honestly, disgusts me more than what the billionaires are doing. I can't even imagine the social politics and dynamics among people like that who run in those circles. Because you know they have to be that way or else they risk losing their status within all of that. I'm not referring to the legitimate experts who are brought in to assist in these projects. Just the people surrounding it who's only way to be involved is to be a sycophant for it.

Dr. Evil did it better. And he had the good sense to stay up there and freeze for a bit.

One of the passengers on Blue Origin is Wally Funk, one of the Mercury 13, women pilots who went through screening tests in the 1960s to become astronauts, but never were given the go ahead to join NASA's program.

I have never loved a thread title more than a discussion of obscenely wealthy corporate oligarchs racing to reach the stars under a heading of "Disaster".

$5.5bn some reports are saying. $550m per minute. Or is that cost to get to where they are now?

I wish I knew what the draw to that Bezos rocket. It went up in the air, it went back down. Am I missing something? The little capsule with passengers in it barely touched the surface of the atmosphere before dropping back down to Earth. At least Branson's ship appeared to have a way of staying up in the atmosphere for awhile before going back down to land like an plane would.

Branson didn’t go up as high

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.newsweek.com/jeff-bezos-launches-69000-feet-higher-richard-branson-space-1611445?amp=1

The only reason I care for this at all is that it beat some records which I always find is noteworthy. Oldest, youngest and richest person in space. Also first firefighter if you really want to count that

Fine, but if I had enough money to just burn away, I'd still prefer Branson's ship. Bezos' rocket reminded me of a giant elevator. Maybe the "Free Fall" ride at Six Flags.

It’s up for debate if they even want to classify Brandon as an astronaut on Wikipedia as some don’t think he went high enough. I laughed when I first saw this debate.

If any schmuck can pay a ton of money to go to space and be called an "astronaut" then the title has truly lost its meaning.

That was pretty cool. I was really happy for Wally; she and her compatriots got shafted by NASA six decades ago, but she finally got her chance. Did you see how happy she looked when she exited the capsule? The look on her face made me glad I watched.

As for the comparison of Branson's Virgin Galactic spaceplane v Bezos' Blue Origin rocket, IMO the spaceplane was flying, the rocket was just falling with style.
