Agreed. I've seen some other fans of Finn/Rey suggesting that they should kiss/flirt/etc. during their reunion, but honestly, I don't want that. Their relationship still needs time to build in a platonic way, romance should come after. The reunion could 'hint' st something, but no more.

 

Tbh,I just want their reunion to be emotionally satisfying, and not pushed off as a hey you again situation, probably not gonna happen, but still, I agree with you.

There's no way they'll push that reunion off to the side, whether they go romantic or stay platonic, that's definitely going to be a huge moment for both characters. I don't see how anyone could take a moment like that and say, "nah, just keep it casual."

 

It'll be hard to top their hug reunion on the SKB.

If JJ is waxing poetic about the script then I have to believe that RJ has done a good job for all the main characters in TFA. It's important to remember that JJ, LK and KK created these characters out of whole cloth and are connected to them in a way that most of us are not. If they're comfortable with the direction of the trilogy then we ought to trust them.

 

Agreed. RJ gets to direct episode 8, but I doubt he was given permission to mess around with character development. KK, JJ and LK most likely already have an outline for how they want the trilogy to play out. If they want a love story, I'm assuming they've already decided who they want it to be between, and RJ won't change that, he'll just be allowed to make it happen the way he wants it to. And with RJ doing rewrites to focus more on the main characters, I personally think there's a good chance we see romance, or at least the start of one, in episode 8.

 

I think what viewers will have to adjust to will be how different the tone and pacing of this next installment will be. JJ said TFA was intended to be emotional rather than expository and this next film might be the opposite. There's a ton of backstory that must be done in a way that isn't a bunch of talking heads telling stories, there are a multitude of new and existing characters that will need to be expanded upon and explained into existence, and finally, the length of the film will most likely be ten or fifteen minutes longer but it will be in the service of setting up a final episode. Unlike TFA, it will have to directly thread out the final denouement of the trilogy. Further character development, outside of a strong introduction, might take a backseat to telling a good story.

Question: (this is kind of a pointless question to be honest haha) if Finn and Rey become romantic, do you guys want "Finn's Confession" theme to become their romance theme? I'd be fine if it did, it's really a beautiful theme, and I noticed it played during some of their intimate moments in TFA, but I'm also sure John Williams could compose a quality, specific theme for their love, should it happen. So either way would be fine with me. Again, kind of a meaningless question, just curious to hear what some of you would want.

Interesting point. The next two movies will need to bring the Resistance/First Order conflict to a satisfying conclusion, carry out Kylo Ren's story arc (I'm really looking forward to what happens if/when he meets Leia and Luke), fill in the blanks of Rey's past, as well as show where she goes next (Jedi, other kind of Force user, whatever), Finn needs to find his place in the world, not to mention whatever new story arcs they introduce to give movies seven and eight a structure.

That is quite a lot to cover, so it could be possible that the filmmakers have or will decide that throwing a love story into the mix is too much for three movies (it's not like Spider-Man where it was the central plot of the trilogy). We'll see, although I think at this point if they want one, they'll be better off building on something from the original movie rather than trying to develop something new in Episode 8. Maybe keep it low-key?

It's also worth noting that we're assuming that if there's going to be a love story between Finn and Rey, that it'll get resolved (happily or tragically-- preferably the former; the Prequels already gave us a tragic love story) within the next two movies. Since Star Wars is now having near-complete synergy between the different parts of the franchise (movies, TV, tie-in materials), is it possible that they're saving that sort of thing for materials beyond Episode 9? I don't know what Disney's plan for the movies are beyond the Sequel trilogy and if they're interested in having any of the new characters reprise their roles in future films (a Poe-centric anthology movie could be interesting), or if they'll want to keep the character's stories open for comics and books. It's worth keeping in mind, though.

 

That's an interesting thought, I could definitely see them going in this direction.

Daisy put up a happy birthday post to John on Instagram and she used a FinnRey fanart, that's awesome haha. She also said she loves all the different artworks of Finn and Rey together, so that's nice too.

 

Yes that was awesome! They adore one another, I fully expect a happy birthday post from john for daisy next month as well, I'll be disappointed if that doesn't happen haha.
