I don't think it's even this complicated. I can't remember which but it was either the novel or the script that said the lightsaber went to Rey because she was stronger. Lucas has always said the lightsaber is just a weapon, it isn't magical, it didn't choose Rey because it doesn't work that way. Kylo was weakened by his ordeal with Han and then in addition to that took hit from Chewie's cross-bow - Rey managed to exploit that. More to the point it's totally possible she's just naturally stronger with the Force than Ren.

Edit: Not trying to say that JJ and Kasdan didn't want it to be a symbol. They did. It's definitely a 'sword in the stone' parallel. I mean... 'Rey' does mean King. It was meant to represent 'this girl is the rightful heir', for sure, but in universe it was literally just the case that Rey happened to be stronger.

I disagree since the lightsaber was always meant for Rey otherwise it wouldn't have called her at Maz's castle. It's not about the moment, it's about the person themselves.

Having Luke's lightsaber calling to Rey and making a point to say that it belonged to Luke's father is symbolical, imo. Same with it bypassing Kylo. Not that the lightsaber can detect DNA. It's about how it's presented to the audience.

It can be the same with Rey seeing the island. Yes FS people have visions, yes Luke said that Dagobah looked like something out if a dream. But with Rey they added sentimentality to it. It makes it seem it brought some familiar comfort for some reason.

Saber didn't choose, the Force did.

It was the Will of the Force for the saber to go to Rey.

The lightsaber not only calls to her but she is able to connect through the Force and snatch it out of Kylo's grasp, as if she's connected directly with it whereas Kylo isn't. Kylo's grandfather may have built it but his mother never carried it into battle, Luke carries it into his battle with evil and his first true test as a Jedi apprentice, there's a direct link through Luke.

That lightsaber is the weapon of a Skywalker, it's passed down from father to son but not directly, so a 3rd party is involved...Obi-Wan firstly and now Maz and Finn.

Regarding the "who are you?" question that Luke asks her, since it has since surfaced that the scene where he asks the question he appears to be inside of a hut or cave, then it must have different context than if he asked it while she was handing him the saber at the very beginning.

If it showed him asking that during that moment that we all know and love from the end of TFA, then you might say it is a good bet that he is thinking " who in the hell is this with my lightsaber?"

But if this is a line of dialogue from a later scene inside the cave or hut, then it must have different context.

Also, are we sure he is even asking it to Rey? I know the LA Times guy said he was asking her, but how do we know that was not an assumption?

There are rumors Kylo Ren and the Knights of Ren show up on Ach-to at some point and confront them.

I thought I even read that Snoke might end up there at some point?

Maybe Luke is asking one of the Knights? Maybe Benicio Del Toro's character ends up there and he is asking him? I have long suspected Del Toro might be connected to the Knights of Ren...

    Lots of possibilities here...

^maybe Luke is hearing the voice of an ancient Jedi or some other manifestation of the force. And that's why he asks "who are you?"

I think what I said was just confusing because that's exactly what I meant. My point is even at Maz's castle that power came from Rey, not the saber. It mattered that she picked it up, because only she had the ability to draw a vision from it. The vision came from her, the saber simply triggered something in her. I 100% agree that the lightsaber is meant to be Rey's, and that the /lightsaber in the snow/ moment is super symbolic, but I don't think it was the lightsaber 'choosing' Rey in that moment. The lightsaber didn't do anything, is my point. The lightsaber is simply a prop to showcase Rey's power, the lightsaber itself isn't more powerful than any other lightsaber. I guess my point is it didn't matter what it was, it could have been a blaster that both Kylo and Rey were trying to pull out the snow, and Rey still would have won because the point is the film is showcasing that Rey is strong with the Force. Of course, having it be Anakin's lightsaber just makes for a way cooler scene with way better symbolism.

You must be new. Welcome to the forums! Be sure to pick your teams, so that you become impervious to counter arguments, and can quickly assemble a list of enemies. It also helps to put a bunch of people on "ignore", so you're not exposed to ideas that challenge your preconceptions. And, don't forget to confirm your bias! Enjoy the..."fun".

The biggest problem I have with these threads is the lack of obedience to how I interpret SW. Ya'll need to work on that. Finding participants able to think for themselves exactly the way I think for myself!

    It's really a problem.

Guys, I've figured it out. Rey is a Zuvio.

Why oversell Zuvio's action figure? Because of his importance to the story.

Why cut him from the film? Because they had to move the reveal to VIII.

It's the complete lack of evidence for this theory that is the biggest clue of all!

We never saw her and Zuvio in the same place.

Makes sense. Rey moonlights as Constable Zuvio at Niima Outpost.

Someone get Mike Zeroh on the phone.

Sigh. It's obvious that you're invested in your Teedo/Plutt shipping wish fulfilment, but some of us are trying to be objective. We just see how Zuvio is the obvious answer.

I see your lack of evidence and I'll raise you even more lack of evidence. She's clearly the daughter of Cindel and Wicket. Any other theories are flat out wrong and stupid!
