    More about water.

There's Rey's 'he will shift the tide' in TLJ. The next time we see him, Kylo Ren is dead and the sea tide is no longer high.
That's after Rey talking about 'Ben's hand', another TLJ element.

Then, after talking to Han, Ben throws his lightsaber. The sea as a grave...

But: Rey got Luke's X wing out of the grave...Luke himself 'unwatered' it
    [IMG]
...was Kylo's saber 'unwatered' too? As I remember, Kylo's saber had a cracked kyber crystal...

Maybe that 'purifying' thing has re-entered canon. In any case, Rey is maybe searching for someone at the end...

There is a running theme with saber-locks being important to the narrative outcome of a duel.

    TPM
Obi-Wan and Maul's fight ends when Obi-Wan is overpowered during a saber-lock with Darth Maul.
    AOTC
Obi-Wan again loses to Dooku being overpowered in a lock at the end of their duel.
    ROTS
Obi-Wan has learnt about saber-locks and retreats to a vantage point before being overwhelmed.
    [IMG][IMG]

In the OT the saber locks are used to show Luke surpassing Vader from their first duel to their second.
    ESB
    [IMG]
    ROTJ
    [IMG]

In TFA Rey is being overpowered in a lock with Kylo, before she closes her eyes and "looks for the light" as Maz had instructed.

    TROS
Rey tires after several strong attacks by Kylo, shown partially by his advantage during saber locks at the end of their fight.
It almost gives him the victory but Leia intervenes.

Kylo has really pushed Rey to this over the course of the film, but I think the implication is that it is a dark side thing for Rey to do.

Rey stabbing Kylo with the same saber he stabbed Han is also possibly an element of karma.

I saw a Twitter post yesterday comparing how Rey and Kylo Ren represent the two sides of Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader.

In TFA, Kylo Ren speaks to Darth Vader's mask. Anakin Skywalker's lightsaber calls to Rey.

In the TROS, Kylo Ren hears Vader's voice. Rey hears Anakin's.

"Bring back the balance, Rey, as I did."

Their first lightsaber duel in TROS takes place in an environment where Vader's mask is between them. Rey is in a white room and Kylo is outside in the dark. They are literally fighting over Vader and Anakin's legacy. Which one will reign? Vader or Anakin?

The novel highlights this even more. Kylo is trying to follow Darth Vader's path, even ditching his own born name. He thinks Darth Vader is his grandfather. Rey ends up following Anakin's, down to taking Anakin Skywalker's name.

Through their dyad, they combine the perfect mixture of Vader/Anakin and his legacy. Dark and Light. Ying and Yang. "Twins of the Force."

It ties in pretty well with the Mortis arc. Kylo represents the Son, Rey the Daughter. Anakin Skywalker is the Father.

This will take a few posts, please follow through all the posts it will make more sense.

    I don't know, I'd say you're pretty good at it. :)

But yes, I do think I'd like to take a crack at the fire/water symbolism, but it'll have to wait until tomorrow, as it's over 2 AM where I'm at. But I have some thoughts there.

Finn and Padme are both at the start of the ROTS (fire) and TROS (water) fight, trying to reason with Anakin and Rey. Anakin chokes Padme in his anger, Rey pushes Finn away to protect him.

    TPM:

Qui Gon: "I've encountered a vergence in the Force"
    Mace: "Centered around a person?"
    Qui Gon: "A boy"

About two generations later Anakin brings balance to the Force and dies. Two Skywalkers survive.

    TROS:

Kylo Ren: "...we're a Dyad in the Force..."

Centered around two persons.A boy and a girl.

    Palpatine: "Not seen in generations"

Ben grandson of Anakin dies. The Skywalker name survives by Rey adopting the name from the Two Skywalkers.

    Bonus

(a little bit of fun to be honest): Sifo Dyas and Dyad. The former, hidden from the Jedi. The latter hidden from the Sith.

    Cheers!

@reyvision that post about Rey and Kylo being two halves of Anakin is very interesting. I think Rey is more a combination of Luke and Leia, but they themselves share many traits with Anakin.

@HevyDevy love the fire and water parallels and I think they did try and make the DS2 ruins look like the platforms on Mustsfar to emphasise that. The duel becomes a combination of the last duels seen in both the OT and PT.

Quicksand is sand+water, a transition element: a first approach to 'water'.
'Sand' is the past being dead and buried irreversibly. 'Water' is not 'dead', but 'gone'. Not the same, and not irreversible, since in these films no one's ever really gone.

That's scene is about Kylo and Rey in Kef-Bir and it's raging water, since the raging snake is healed by Rey; just as Kylo would be later in the film.

Ochi hurt the Snake before dying, and that might have been true about Ochi and Ben at the cause-effect level.

Sidious: "I sense Lord Vader is in danger..."
For the lava duel. Sidious senses Anakin at risk.

    Leia: "Ben..."
Sensing Kylo in danger yet also concerned for Rey.

I'm drunk and eager to discuss any topics here.
