ST The Romantic Future of Kylo Ren and Rey

Ok guys, I am going to tell you in all honesty that in spite of all the beautiful TFA artwork that we have seen, this is the first to bring an actual tear to my world-weary and slightly cynical eye.

I feel that shipping preferences aside, looking at this really drives the point home that of course he has compassion for her. How can he not? That sadness he saw in her is something he knows, something he understands. And if she can see into him (even without a Force bond) she can understand that part of him as well, and she can have compassion for him in return. If there's anyone who can connect to whatever light is left in Kylo Ren, it's Rey. She is the only one who can truly understand that kind of loneliness and hurt.

There is a barrier between Kylo Ren and his mother, and I think that this artwork gets to the heart of why. I think that in the aftermath of Han's killing, whatever walls Kylo Ren has put up around him will appear to be strengthened, at least initially, in an effort to keep himself together. Of course I want him to reconnect with Leia, but I've come to think that she cannot make the initial chink in Ren's armor the way Rey can. I think Rey will be the catalyst to his decision to change and turn back to the light, not Leia.

Anyway. I want Reylo with all the works to be end game in the ST, but I feel like even if it doesn't happen there is no doubt that Kylo Ren and Rey have been set up to have a very powerful connection and intersecting arcs. They might not get to giggle and ride a space horse together, lol, but they are definitely meant to be connected to each other in a very human, very real way.

 

I hope they bring pictures into these movies, be cool if Rey sees a ppicture of young Ben Solo

A picture of young Ben Solo? Why does this remind me of Pride and Prejudice when Lizzie goes to Darcy's mansion and sees a couple of "likenesses" of Darcy? Including when he was little?

 

I disagree with the article in some cases because they don't make distinction between transitional, bump-in-endgame-couple's-road couples and bad endgame couples. Transitional couples are not meant to be good. The whole point is that they are so bad they make endgame-couple-to-be realize they want to be together. Cases in point Victor Krum + Hermione and Lavender Brown + Ron. The whole point of those awful couples is to make Hermione and Ron realize that they want to be together. Their romances with other people clearly don't work, they are jealous of Victor/Lavender, so why torture each other when they can make honey together?

Likewise, how could they be surprised by Anidala when the movies are about them? It doesn't matter if chemsitry isn't there, narratively speaking, they were the only couple. No one should have been surprised that they happened.

Matt's Solo Cousin "Manchurian Candidate-ish" is the word I was looking for. Thank you. There was something very eerily like that going on.

The bolded is basically why I know we have no reason to be afraid of anything. Their bond will be explored, it will be a highlight of the Trilogy and it will be incredibly deep and meaningful no matter what kind of relationship they ultimately forge.

 

Beautiful art works but It's also SOOOO SADDDDDDDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This have the same level of angst with the fan art of Han and young Ben that I saw some times after watching the movie

Seriously!!!! I mean why do these so-called Luke fans hate Luke so much as to want to make Rey a Skywalker? For that to happen Luke would either have to be a truly deadbeat dad (dropping her off on Jakku to fend for herself) -OR- a lover with absolutely no judgment, because the "Luke's wife runs off with their kid and abandons her on Jakku" makes Luke a really bad judge of character. Luke is so dim and so force-unsensitive that he is going to hook up with a woman who is so bad as to leave her kid with Unkar Plutt instead of some nice obscure family of pioneering teachers or farmers on some Outer Rim planet? That would make Luke a total chump, *and* the least perceptive Jedi ever. I mean I know Luke's training was cut short, but come on!!! Wouldn't he feel some familiar "awakening" in the force if his child was born?

So now add his lack of judgment and force perception onto either being a deadbeat dad or a total chump to him totally screwing up with Kylo and probably being fooled right under his nose by Snoke *and* running away when it all goes bad. You know what that adds up to? Luke being a pretty big loser all around.

For goodness sake, if you like Luke, let him keep some dignity. Have him devote himself to the Jedi utterly and suffer the defeat of Kylo, but still have the chance to "make things right" with Kylo and the balancing of the force. Don't add in all this "deadbeat dad" and "chump" stuff.

 

I agree that he's in awe but in this case it's mixed with distress. Someone he heretofore considered inferior to him, basically unveils his biggest fears and that's bound to cause him consternation. The power reversal is swift and it's cutthroat. I think he was in commotion after the shock wore off, especially considering he's got to answer to Snoke for that. The fact that he was unable to obtain the map and was metaphorically handed his balls to him was a burn of epic propotions. When he's speaking to Snoke about it he appears flustered and unhinged, although I think at that point it's not just about his ego but also about his worry that they're going to use the superweapon and eventually blow up the resistance (and hence his mother) - all because of his failure. I also agree that he's a mamma's boy. I just don't believe he wanted them to use that weapon at all.

 

The light on the other side of Kylo's face reminds me of Luke in ROTJ:



Just like Luke, it shows that Kylo is having an internal struggle between the light and dark. He's being torn apart between his love for his father's and loyalty to Snoke. Wonder if there's a voice (Snoke's?) goading him to kill Han.

I completely agree when you brought up his force instability! The dark won for just a moment when he did... his actions afterwards is the opposite. Poor Ben is literally and metaphorically torn apart.

This is so beautiful, both the art and your write-up.

That line, when Kylo read her mind and empathizes with her loneliness and imagination is one of the most moving and emotionally deep parts of the movie. here are two characters who share something and there's understanding on the level that just unique for them. Amid all fluffy hugging and talking at the same time that's usually served as "emotional" and "bonding", this is on completely different level and 1000 times more genuine and resonant.

Agreed. Much of his distress was over possible blowing of the Resistance star system. As always, much more is going on with Kylo psychologically than meets the eye. It takes several viewings and discussions to uncover everything.

This is where "I always talk my way out of it," and "I never ask that question (Will it work?) before I do it" finally runs out. He didn't plan any of it. He's as reckless as he**. Just like Kylo/Ben.

 

Yess to all of this!! I remember when were discussing reylo months ago, we were all like "well it may end up being one sided" or "maybe she'll just be alone" The movie left their interaction in a weird place, it can either get better or much worse. There was this uncertainty and I at least, was so unsure if LF would have the guts to go down this road. At most in the end I thought they'd share a longing look at each other.
But months have passed by now, and there is much more insight into the characters, amazing music analysis, and we got the celebs liking reylo pics lol (that always instantly makes me happy). Now reylo just seems inevitable. Like how could they not go down this route? There is so much they can explore, so much potential, a treasure trove of amazing storytelling with those two! They can make such a beautiful story about two lost people coming together because they know exactly how the other feels. It's so damn unique of story. We won't find it anywhere else!!! I pray and pray that reylo comes true. It just has to. From an artist's/writer's POV, this is what makes sense.

Actually, Adam Driver's eyes are brown but I can see how they could be perceived as hazel. At first I thought they might be. In any case, they're gorgeous because they're so expressive. The way he looked at Han during the catwalk scene killed me. Bonus: look at those lips. Congratulations to his parents... they did a grand job

Sorry, I have no idea which issue it is, but it is in the Princess Leia comic.

 

And there are still people who genuinely think she's going to kill this man... the legacy of Anakin, Padme, Han, Leia and Luke.



The Original Trilogy trio have spent years mourning his loss. Han and Leia broke up and Luke exiled himself to a freaking island to get answers because he probably blamed himself in some way (yes, Luke left because of the loss of his student and nephew, not because he killed his wife or because his wife died or because his "daughter" went missing). Ben's betrayal broke them apart, shattered the perfect trinity. Again, a narrative fact.

How can anybody deny that this character is important? It has nothing to do with stripping Finn of his "male lead" title. Rey is the lead. Period. She is the main character. Finn and Ren will probably end up receiving equal attention in the long-run. They're both "male leads".

Beautiful post! Even if they don't end up together, they could have still this deep meaningful connection, more powerful than any other, even romance. Which is why I don't understand why some people think that Rey will never develop any compassion for Kylo. They're so much alike! If anyone could understand, it'll be them.

 

My pet theory is that Kylo's motivation in TFA was saving Leia. So when the light went out, he knew they were ready to fire and all his hope was lost of saving her.

 

I agree with this so much, and that picture made me gasp aloud.

 

rey09 Camaro I see it. Iiiiii see eyes...and kissy lips! I can't wait for gifs and vids of unmasked Kylo with Snoke and Hux to become legal. His lips are beyond kissy and pillowy in that scene, due to camera angle.

YoloKylo That's my pet theory too, that lots of stuff in the movie was motivated by that. And that maybe he warned the Resistance after all. Does anyone have novelization quote when they receive the message that weapon will hit Illenium system?

 

Lol! Problem solved, Rey is just a red herring. Rey Skywalker fans can pack their bags now and go home.

 

Lord have mercy... arriku is going to kill me one of these days. Anyone that is unable to see the parallels needs to really sit down and think about these characters beyond what's there at surface level in TFA. If your heart doesn't break for little Ben Solo and little Rey, you're dead inside!
