Amph The Saga of Recluce and other series: the L.E. Modesitt, Jr Thread

I can't remember for sure, but I definitely noticed that.

 

Done Towers. I really liked it. Mergaera was a little annoying, but I got over it.

I think I'll take a break for a book, let you guys catch up a bit.

I'm at the point where Lerris meets Justen. Justen was my favorite character last time around, so I'm looking forward to seeing him again

 

Yeah Im on pg 120 something. Its been hard as hell to catch a break this past week to read. Plus only reading Magic everyother day is dragging quite a bit as well.

 

I don't read that fast. I just tend to sit down and read if I have nothing better to do. On the weekends I read a bit more than usual if I'm really into a book. Last night I finished Towers by reading between whistles and during commercial breaks of a hockey game.


Now that Battlefield 3 is out, my reading time will drop significantly.

I'm about halfway through Recluse and really enjoying it, much more than I did the first time around. The magic system is still a bit confusing, but I think as Lerris learns more, I'll understand more.

 

The magic system definitely becomes clearer as the book (and series) progresses. We learn as the characters do.

I'm finished with Magic of Recluce this time around, but haven't started Towers of Sunset quite yet.

 

Started The Magic Engineer.

 

I really liked that one.

 

Magic Engineer is my favorite of the first bunch (i.e. the first 5).

 

Do they take a significantly different track starting with 6? I'm just curious about your grouping (I've pnly read through 5).

 

Speaking of the grouping for this series. RJ I know you said that this series is all over the place I thought... Can you bust a list out as far as the grouping goes if its not to spoiler heavy?

Though I consider 1-5 to be a group as well, because they really fit well together despite jumping around.

I just got done with a bar scene in which This White Wizard paid for a sheep and supernovaed it into a meal. WEIRD. He was arguing with the Gray Wizard about if its bad to feed the hungry. Im def confused with that whole system.

 

From start to finish, its a bit less than 2000 years. Anytime I put a space between books, there's a significant gap (minimum of 60 years, frequently more on the order of a few hundred).

Ah yes, a very interesting scene, and that's part of what I mentioned in an above post about how the interaction between order and chaos is anything but simple - but that's part of what makes this series so good.

 

In non-Recluce Modesitt news, I just saw the schedule for Modesitt's book signing tour next week for the release of Scholar (book 4 in the Imager Portfolio)... and he's actually coming to Raleigh, which is only about half an hour away. No way am I turning down this opportunity.

Also, so much for having decided not to get Scholar in hardback and forcing myself to wait for the paperback

Anyway Im on pg 215 or so. These chapters are kinda weird after reading Lerris. I assume The Red Head is Tamra being taking in by Antonin? I also assume that he is going to try to take her body for his last soul transfer, as Justen explains it?

Last night I read the part where Justen and Lerris traveled through Freven and he explained that they basically made a small sun to melt everything. lol I bet that was something to see. I havent gotten much further, only to the part where Justen is teaching Lerris how to defend himself from White incursions upon his soul.
