Going from memory, no notes. Those "diagonally slanting blocks" caused a two months journey tracking down the vintage model parts that went into the Avenger studio model. That piece, specifically, was from an historically inaccurate model of a Japanese aircraft carrier. A specific part of that specific piece represented a fundamental difference in the carrier landing procedures of Japanese vs American pilots. It turned out that aerial photography during the war, that was released long after the war, demonstrated that the model used by ILM was incorrect. That model maker changed the subsequent releases. Modern DIY studio scale model makers who wish to reproduce the vintage Avenger have to find that out-of-print model to achieve that exact "diagonally slanting blocks framing the bridge".

Yes, the stern view of that Star Destroyer conning tower with a deflector shield power generator dome blowing up and the two X-Wings also utilized the large VFX conning tower model.

According to a ROJ storyboard a Lambda-class shuttle was originally considered to depart from the stern of the conning tower.
In his Star Wars Storyboards book J.W. Rinzler suggests it was Vader's at the beginning, but I wouldn't exclude the possibility that it showed instead the Emperor's shuttle departing from the SSD.

I always liked the bridge of Vader's Executor. Also, we got to know the bridge of that one Star Destroyer that Han flew over well, even if it's just a few seconds. Lol.

I do appreciate TESB for humanizing the Imperial officers. Many are trying to do their job, fulfill ambitions, etc. Plus, they think they can do it better than bounty hunters. Well, Piett pretty much is the most interesting officer in the movies. Tarkin is more interesting the EU per se, IMO.

The Rogue One destroyers have the same "curving bridge" as the Avenger - see screen caps here, immediately after the "Y-wing bombing sequence" for illustration of the bridge from the inside:

The same is visible on Vader's destroyer:

Obviously some kind of continuity error, as the exterior bridge balcony clearly reveals three flat window walls assembled together. And such a 'flat' balcony bridge would be a perfect match for the "first catch of the day" Star Destroyer bridge in ESB. ;)

The exterior shows 3 sets of 3 windows - two set at an angle to the middle one - producing something that, from the outside, looks like 3 sides of a hexagon.

Makes sense that from the inside, the corners would be rounded off a bit.

Quick update on this thread - excellent work all round, generally, collecting evidence.
But do we now have a consensus how wide the ISD 1 and 2 bridge towers are, relative to overall model and ship length? Assuming standard length between 1600 and 1606 metres, for a baseline?
And from there, a ratio of bridge window to tower width, would be nice to nail down.
I've heard anywhere from 257 to 275 m width estimate, depending on sources, for ISD2.

Well, we know the Devastator model was 91 cm long, and the Avenger model was 259 cm long, from Saxton's chart:

    http://www.theforce.net/swtc/exhibit/scale.html

If someone's measured the models and has figures for the bridges themselves, then they can be upscaled from there.
