UDC XI: The Drabble Menace!​

Hello, fellow writers! It's an absolute pleasure to bring back a tried-and-true boards classic for another round of mini-fanfiction goodness. That's right: the Ultimate Drabble Challenge is here again!

What is a Drabble, You Ask?​

A drabble is a piece of writing that is exactly 100 words in length. For an author, the ability to express a complete idea in such a confined space can be tricky – but that's half the fun of the game.

However, the same as with the last two rounds, if you so choose, you can post APPROXIMATELY a hundred words - a little less, a little more, it doesn't matter! I repeat: your drabbles do not have to be exactly a hundred words. We're not going to make any hard and fast rules as to what constitutes a little less or a little more, either. That's your choice as an author! For those who don't enjoy sculpting their drabble into a perfect hundred words, that's okay! We want to take as much stress as possible from the challenge and let anyone who wants to participate however they'd like!

The Challenge​

The goal of this challenge is to write a hundred drabbles in twenty weeks! Every Monday, a set of five prompts will be posted, and you will then have a week to work on writing your drabble set. For those authors who complete all twenty weeks, you will have triumphed over the challenge and win ultimate bragging rights!

The Prizes​

On top of ultimate bragging rights, this year, by user request, we are going to offer C O L O R S for our UDC champions! That's right: we said colors!

• If you finish all 100 dabbles in 20 weeks by the deadline, then you will receive 1 week of colors!
• If you finish 15-19 weeks, you will receive 5 days of colors!
• If you finish 10-14 weeks, you will receive 72 hours of colors!

The Rules​

1. Each week's five drabbles must be posted together, in one go. These drabbles are intended as sets, not individual prompts.

2. You may rearrange the order of the week's prompts if necessary. Again, we're trying to encourage as much creativity as possible.

3. The same as with the last UDC, we are going to include a selection of bonus prompts that you can mix and patch with that week's primary prompts at will.

4. To keep things neat and tidy, please keep your drabbles in one thread. Include UDC XI in your header, so that other readers can easily find your drabbles too!

5. Once your thread is up, post a link here so that your collection can be included in the index. You may also share a link when you update throughout the challenge.

6. When posting your drabble thread, tagging can be tricky. Do your best, and tag with the era(s) you think you will predominantly write for.

7. You can jump in on this challenge at any time! Latecomers are always welcome, but you must start the challenge at the beginning and do all the prompts in order.

8. NSWFF drabbles are welcome, too! These drabbles will be all fandom friendly. (Only, please note that if you do a multi-fandom entry, Star Wars drabbles must be posted on the Star Wars side of things. NSWFF is for non-Star Wars fan fiction only.)

9. Get creative with interpreting the prompts! Think about the several meanings a word can have, and don't be afraid to be abstract in your interpretation. Thread a story through all five drabbles, try your hand at dialogue only, give us a slice of introspection, or challenge yourself to write five poetry – the sky's the limit!

10. Again, a traditional drabble is exactly 100 words. (For those who need it, a handy dandy word counter can be found here.) However, imperfect drabbles that fall short of or exceed the hundred word mark are still welcome.

AN EXTRA CHALLENGE FROM YOUR MODS

This UDC, your prompts will come from devilinthedetails, Findswoman, and Mira_Jade! As a bonus game, we challenge you to guess which sets are from which mod! Each mod has chosen prompts entirely from a single story they've written - for an extra challenge, you can even try to guess which story, though that is not a requirement. At the end of the challenge, we will compile a complete list of prompts supplied by each mod. You will then be able to guess who Mods A, B, and C are from those lists! Though you can certainly try to guess along the way, as well, we just ask that you keep your guesses private.

Those with correct guesses will receive 72 hours of colors! (With a bonus 24 hours if you guess the stories, as well. )

I have a good feeling that this particular UDC is going to be epic. This is the year. We've got this.

Lol, that definitely sounds sane to me! (Though that may say something about the collective mental health of all us authors. )

1. They are intended to be options to swap out if one of the primary prompt stumps you. Though, of course, if you're inspired to do extra drabbles, then you are by all means welcome to do so!

2. Oi! I definitely did not make this clear enough in the OP, for which I apologize. I'll answer here and then go back and make the necessary edits, as this is an excellent question! At the end of the challenge, we will compile a complete list of prompts supplied by each mod. You will then be able to guess who Mods A, B, and C are from those lists! Though you can certainly try to guess along the way, as well - just as long as you keep your guesses private.

They can be different characters, or they can be the same. How interconnected or not the drabbles are is entirely up to you.

We welcome you joining the challenge! Just very briefly, as a reminder, when you do post, only NSW stories can go in NSWFF. So, if you do choose to do a multi-fandom drabble collection, just make sure to keep them all non-Star Wars.

 

Ooh, what an amazing start we’re off to already! Great to see the threads popping up! I think I too would like to give this a try and at least see how I do—I can’t make any guarantees (I too belong to the “never finished UDC” club) but the muse/moose/etc. could use some definite jumpstarting, so I shall give it the best shot I can.
