Yes, it's that time of year again where you must pick your three favourite films of the year. The rules are simple; the film must have been released in 2006 and you needed to have seen it at the cinema for it to qualify.
Also think ahead to next year and tell us what your most anticipated film will be.

    Happy voting :D

elliot! consider yourself in detention,my lad!
    goodness me.

my top three are as follows...
3.pirates of the carribbean-dead mans chest.
    2.superman returns.*
    1.the prestige.

now,i put superman returns, even though it was a shockingly dreadful experience, only because as a film it worked to enforce my own belief that my creative skills are superior to that of certain writers and directors currently plying thier evil trade in hollywood.

    mostly looking forward to spiderman3.

Meh PotC was ok but it didnt do that much for me. And as cool as Superman was it wasnt that much of a memorable experiance. Underworld Evo was awesome for me, I loved the firtst one and it was a great sequel with a great story. Clerks II was just my type of movie- just like the first one was. And Tenacious D... I'm a D fan boy. I've been waiting for this for years. I love it.

The main thing is that you've both got the right idea. Most of the time it isn't down to what is technically the best film, but what the experience was like, pre, during or post viewing. That's another reason why the main rule is that you have to have seen it at the cinema, which imo is the only way to see a film properly.

    I'm going to give it a week or two before I decide my final ranking, but it's between five films;
    Superman Returns
    Children of Men
    Casino Royale
    The Prestige
    Pan's Labyrinth

This is going to be very difficult to decide in-truth.

My top three this year would have to be:

1.) Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan.
    2.) V for Vendetta.
    3.) Crank / The Departed.

For me, it had to be Borat. I have never laughed so hard in a movie theatre in my whole life...except for maybe Me, Myself, and Irene... :p

Coming in at number 2, would have to be V for Vendetta. It was pushed back, and pushed back more, and I hoped that this film was worth all the controversy...gladly for me, it was!

And tied for 3rd spot is the sleeper hit Crank, and Martin Scorsese's The Departed...I really hope Jack Nicholson gets an Oscar nod for that film...and for crying out loud! Will someone give Scorsese the Oscar he so bloody well deserves!

Hmm... Quite a hard choice this year...

Casino Royale & Pan's Labyrinth, definately... I still need to see Children of Men, which may take place in my top three...

I haven't managed to see too many films this year so will have to think about it

POTC 2 and X3 are probably going to make the final list

Coming from someone who rates Die Another Day so highly, that comment doesn't have much substance Jamie :p ;)

V for Vendetta was released this year in March. It was meant to be Nov '05 but got put back, so V still counts although it would be in my most disappointing film list along side X-3 and PotC2.

I think I know what will come top of my list, but deciding where the others will lie is another matter. The past few months have just been soooo good for quality films.

As you said, down to taste and experience. As I found Casino Royale to be a huge dissapointment with all the hype everyone gave it :p

    1. V for Vendetta. Yeah, people say it's not as good as the graphic novel, but I still found it pretty enjoyable and refreshing.
    2. Pirates of the Caribbean 2 (shame that Orlando Bloom and Kiera Knightley are planks of wood though).
    3. X-men 3, I guess, largely by default. Not seen anything else apart from Superman Returns and that was just a glorified remake of Superman 1, starting with Brandon Routh and Kevin Spacey impersonating Christopher Reeve and Gene Hackman respectively, and the plot being a near copy of S1, right down to the female sidekick with wavering loyalties.

Okay, here's my three favourite films of the year:

    1. Brokeback Mountain - the first film I saw in 2006 and still my favourite of the year. Its a film that I think has a rare combination of great acting, superb photography and an outstanding screenplay. Technically it was an excellent piece of film-making and on a personal level, I found the story deeply moving; a wonderful elegy to forbidden love.

    2. The History Boys - Funny, melancholic, moving, quite wonderful film.

    3. The New World - Stunningly slow but I loved it. It was like a surreal dream, the camera drinking in the detail accompanied by my favourite film score of the year by James Horner.

My three worst films of the year would include X-Men 3, V for Vendetta (sorry Ben!) and Poseidon. The latter is only included because I couldn't really think of a third that I didn't like. Poseidon was more a disappointment than a terrible film. Too much reliance CGI for my liking although the film itself was effective.

    ...brokeback mountain?
is it still relevant to make a 'gay cowboy movie' quip?

I always have trouble remembering the films from the first half of the year, regardless of how much I enjoyed it at the time, so I had to trawl your answers for reminders. So based on the films seen here:

    Ice Age 2
    Borat
Casino Royale / The Departed - cannot decide between them.

Since learning that Pan's Labyrinth is going to be all in Spanish, I think I will be checking it out; I need the practice.

    Feliz Navidad

This year I hardly ever attended any movies. There's just a huge gap which I can only fill in by guessing hard that the movie I liked was this year.

I hate shortlists but the ones I can remember are the actual good ones too:
    1. Ice Age 2 - absolute 5 stars
    2. The Fast and The Furios: Tokyo Drift - absolute 5 stars with an awesome soundtrack too
(it actually helped me with my NFS game :D)
    3. The Fearless with Jet Li.
    4. The last place is a tiebreaker between Don and Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna. The first is more entertaining, the latter is more "serious".

    I'm looking forward to: ?
    1. Maybe being able to go to the cinema bit more often.
    2. I think Don will have a sequel. But I'll just go with the flow. I don't think they make good samurai movies any more. :p Or perhaps something Infernal Affairs-like with Andy Lau. =P~
    3. IMAX playing all 6 SW movies in a go or two. [face_praying] I don't understand why they did this with the LOTR movies but not the SW ones.

After much deliberating, I think I?ve decided upon my Top 3, so without further-ado, here they are:

    1. Superman Returns - I actually feel a bit guilty having this as my number one, but I can?t fault it. It?s all down to the opening credits, which just wrenched open my inner-child and it was quite emotional. I loved the mushiness, the action, everything! And seeing it at the IMAX in 3D was a highlight of the year too. I expect a lot more for the sequel, but being a patient chap this one hit the right spots for me.

    2. Casino Royale - Bond needed a change and thankfully they pulled it off, and the final result was better then I could have hoped for. I enjoyed every second of it, with a great crowd I must admit, and good to see a risky move pay dividends. Daniel Craig is the man of the year!

    3. The Prestige - Unconventional story telling pulled off brilliantly. Best Victorian production design to grace a film and great performances and music score (which I got from iTunes just today). Classy stuff and bodes very well for The Dark Knight.

Special mention to Pan?s Labyrinth and Children of Men which could have just as easily been in the top three.

As for next year, The Bourne Ultimatum is firmly my most anticipated, with Hot-Fuzz and 300 following.

I'm sorry, but WHAT!?! Tokyo Drift was an awful movie...don't get me wrong, I liked the first one, even though it was basically Point Break in a car - I have it on DVD, and I'm into cars, music, and all that biz, but Toyko Drift was just going back to the well one too many times!

I'm with Tice, the two films I'm looking forward to the most in 2007 are Hot Fuzz...You just know that is going to RULE!...and The Bourne Ultimatum. I also want to see Transformers -- it will be like being a kid again! And Live Free or Die Hard...yeah, I love the films, and it probably won't fare as well as the other three, but I will reserve judgement until I see it, but I am hopeful! [face_praying]
